Why do so many players waste ammo on pox walkers?

Hard but not impossible and it still happens enough to notice. Usually it’s player not paying attention multiple times in row and grabbing both small and large bags (ha) when they’re only missing a few rounds.
Had this happen a few times over the last couple of days, the shredder psyker who just couldn’t be bothered to glance at the team ammo count/colors. Doing it over and over even after character voice lines or player saying something makes for less fun games; I swear some people do it out of malice.

Don‘t blame it on malice, when it can be explained by stupidity.
A lot of people are just very dumb.

video games are for wasting ammo

I sometime need to be carefull about ammo but often if you are lucky enougth to have a balanced team the sharpshooter never ran out of ammo, the psyker don’t use them and anyone using a shotgun/'nade launcher can sustain only with the vet passif aura. So emptying a mag of autopistol/shotgun/revolver in the hord can thin it a lot without consequences.

Some of you stated that ammo supply isn’t short in Darktide - I’d like to add “depending on the team composition, weapons and loot discipline.”

If you have a veteran with their ammo passive in your team and 1-2 staff psykers, then yes, ammo hardly runs out even if one team member bolters every lone pox walker on the map.
But then you have those teams which lack the above and some weapons are real ammo drains if you use them on everything.

On many maps hordes can be melee’d at certain choke points without great risk (at least with a cleave melee weapon). However, even if the melees are taking care of the horde there is always the “gun makes boom”-guy. Again, no issue for me if there is plenty of spare ammo and that exact guy doesn’t rush to every ammo cache, letting the rest of the team run dry.

I mean, if everybody runs Recon Lasgun, yes I see you running out. But what are the odds of everyone bringing the worst item in the game? 2%? :joy:

Yeah I’ve had game where every one is on yellow/orange in ammo without sharpshooter but the 'gryn is still using his minigun on every ennemi even when they can be easly disposed in one slide+overhead

Laying waste to a horde with a rippergun mag is some of the most fun I can have in this game.

You could probably summarize the causations with the following use cases-

  1. A pragmatic and good player knows the team currently has excess ammo (therefore, they are saving everyone time/energy since there will only be a marginal/zero net loss of ammo)
  2. A player is bad at melee
  3. A player is panicking
  4. A player is obsessed with inflating their modded scoreboard numbers
  5. A player is just having fun, even if it’s suboptimal gameplay and/or degrades your respective level of enjoyment. Maybe they should be on a lower difficulty, maybe they’re having a bad day, maybe they’re having too good of a day lol, who knows
  6. A player is testing builds, breakpoints, blessings, etc. Many people don’t bother using the Meatgrinder or Modded area or Breakpoint Calculators
*7) A player specifically brought a ranged weapon to efficiently clear hordes, since their melee is specialized for single-target/armor

*My money is on numbers 7, then 5, then 2 as being the majority culprits.

I kinda wish that ammo pickups proportionally refilled everyone’s ammo, regardless of who picks up the ammo. And, if someone has full ammo, then their excess proportion of a pickup would be redistributed to anyone that doesn’t have full ammo, etc.

*EDIT- Added number 7, thanks to @Ralendil and @Mayson

It’s also very efficient in actuality. I don’t agree with Makkro’s take here at all.
Shooting Hordes with guns shouldn’t be treated as an issue. That’s baseline gameplay and part of the game.

You forgot one important:

  • a player has chosen a ranged weapon for its capacity to kill efficiently horde enemies

Well sometimes, when the waves of zombis anoy me cause they wont end, ill pull out my gun. It usualy end things quicker than meele.

You jest, but it’s more like 20%, more if you count unconsecrated weapons and random blessings; some days spike to a higher number.

Grab the team loadout mod and see for yourself, the results may shock you; it’s a real eye-opener.
Furthermore, there are lots of players running around with 1 or NO weapon blessings , let alone 1 useful one, in damnation (white/green/blue), you often bump into them on Hi Intensity.

INB4 #CraftingSux, you can at least bother to upgrade to orange and likely pick 1 useful blessing and perk by Damantion.
I’ve even seen a lev 22 who hadn’t even selected any feats…

Sounds like someone brought a sword to a gun fight?

Sorry. Couldn’t resist it. Just a j/k.

But on topic, it’s rare to run out of ammo. And if you’ve brought a dakka dakka Ogryn gun, when else are you going to use it? Sure it might spoil your intended Turtolsky fun but I’m sure there’s been plenty of melee Ogryns in the past expressing similar feelings about the flamer.

Ah, you are very right! Yes this can definitely be the case, just like how Ogryn can use Cleaver for all non-armor and then spam Grenade Gauntlet for armor, etc.

It’s funny cause nobody bats an eye when Zealot flames a horde down, but if somebody uses shotty/ripper/etc. it draws more ire

I was more referring to what could be happening when it “appears” to be ammo-wasting. Ralendil stated what I was already considering as a baseline, but I should’ve definitely included stated that assumption. People bring specialized loadouts for horde/armor like Ogryn Cleaver/GG, Axe/Shotty, etc.

The axe is a typically a much better “horde” weapon than the shotgun is, most often paired with brutal mom, and shotgun isn’t really one due to poor ammo.
Shotgunning a horde is more of a waste of ammo than most things mentioned in this thread.

I wouldn’t even consider the Ripper a horde weapon, again low(ish) ammo and it’s usually paired with a melee weapon more suited to the task anyway.

Lawbringer can do it ammo efficiently, relatively speaking. If its groaners anyway. I’d love to see its special shell infested damage increased.

But the axe is better at it with BM because infinite ammo.

It’s fun to mag dump sometimes and ammo is plentiful. What more reason do you need?

If this kind of thing bothers you, you might want to check out a game called GTFO (stupid name, I know, but it’s good). It’s a bit slower paced and requires tighter teamwork, actually much closer to what I was expecting from Darktide.

For sure; I was just listing commonly seen relevant combos to illustrate to Mayson/Ralendil that I agreed with their insight. You couldn’t pay me to run shotties with their current ammo economy in pubs right now lol. They’re viable but too annoying for pubbing QOL for me. I prefer running Braced Auto + Autopistol.

Yeah horde is basically the only thing I don’t use my Ripper on lmao but it can definitely do it in a pinch with Firing Frenzy. And then you still have Can Opener to poke-n-shoot the crusher/mauler bois. Usually just running GG or Gorgonum though
