I think the problem is not if everything makes sense or is lore-wise correct. The problem with the “story” and this new class is just that it feels suddenly far-fetched and doesn’t match the picture that was drawn about Kruber before, atleast that’s what I feel like. They announced the class, ppl were like “how does this all makes sense”… ohh let’s write some lines about his ancestors from Bretonnia we suddenly got some information about… I mean srsly, that’s just a poor way to justify the GK after seeing the forums being “enraged” about it, nothing else.
I still don’t understand the purpose of new classes over a new character… i mean 5 classes instead of 3, stretching the story instead of building on it… I don’t even think that just a new class will create smth. that feels rly fresh and new… in the end it’s just Kruber with 1 or 2 new weapons and 1 Ability that may feel different. And even if I really like to play Kruber and should be happy about new content for him I’m more hyped about the new weather system, since it could really add a fresh feeling when playing a map (well outdors).
Not argueing if this is far-fetched, out of character, not much change in gameplay or anything else. But if you truely believe that the lore has only be written AFTER the forum went havoc, then you have absolutely no idea how a normal review process work.
It is very safe to say that the lore behind the class has been written AND approved by GW long before the announcement of the class.
In addition (and I know very well how poor of a metric is it) the announcement of Season 3 and of the GK lore post are the most liked announcements in the Vermintide 2 tab for the whole of 2020. Hm, actually the most liked for at least the last two years O.o
This is true because I don’t work in that business. Non the less, I just wanted to point out how it felt like when I saw the post about the new Season and the Grail Knight, followed by Markus de Mandelot 2 days later or so. I mean, they could have just done it in one go… or not? Dunno maybe that’s another hidden game dev strategy a casual user like me didn’t know about so enlighten me please.
They have 24 and 22 likes… I mean, ok maybe that’s smth. but I’m not that impressed by it. Anyways the season 3 announcement was nice and I’m looking forward for it, no need to like everything.
Ah sorry. I was unprecise. I meant the Steam Forum tab. They have both above 1,000. There is only one other post with similar numbers although the Season 3 post is far above everything else. So there seems to be some genuine interest.
As for the rest. Feeling dissatisfied and expressing it, is fair and normal. However, sometimes people are blaming FS for the strangest things. Either I am overly optimistic or people are just beyond common logic. As for the timing, if I had to make a guess, I am pretty sure the GK lore was planned for the Friday dev blog post but got pulled forward because of the forums. The reason is simply to keep in the news. There are thousands of games fighting for our interest. The more often you can post something of interest the higher the change to get and retain players. Therefore, separating the announcement and the GK lore from each other makes sense.
It’s only one of his ancestors that are dragonslayers, the rest were all nobles and knights before that, it’s just how Bretonnia works.
They are, and I just explained why this is the case.
Which is poor writing, because a commoner in one area who feels like he’s been mistreated by the higher ups there who then finds out that he’s the last living descendant of a great hero in another country should absolutely be impacted by that. That’s quite a huge revelation that should impact the way he views himself, and the way others talk about him, because like I said earlier, he’s not just a farmer from nobody roots, his common upbringing is proof of something that was lost, and that his family was betrayed and then protected by the fay enchantress herself.
Him finding out and having his reactions either be “Completely uproot everything I believed in, leave my country behind and enter the service of a new goddess” or “Don’t care, I will never even really speak about it or display any real emotional arc” is not good writing.
I don’t think anyone is arguing there isn’t going to be interest in a flashy new class, there’s a whole bunch of people playing who don’t care about the characters and have their only exposure to the setting as a whole being total war and this. I think you could sell a new career and it would get an insane reaction almost no matter what.
Honestly, I feel like they’re overwhelmed. Implementing PVP is harder than they expected (according to the CEO on stream), they just released a 3 map update, and they’re having to put it onto console too.
I think having Careers instead of a character was their way of keeping the content coming. After PVP comes out things will change imo.
Just one of Krubs dozens of ancestors was a “pure-bred” brettonian noble. After that, all imperial commoners. So he’s only a small percentage of that, at best. Only reason he’s the “heir”, is that there are no more other members of that family. Even imagine Krub’s mother knew about their lineage, and told him when he was a kid of imperial farmers. What would it have changed? Nobody in his village would have cared, they’re still just poor farmers. His superiors in the imperial army certainly wouldn’t have given a hoot. In Brettonia, they’d have laughed in his face as the son of foreign commoners as well, and then execute him for his insolence. It’d have changed nothing at all. Krub doesn’t now inherit a brettonian castle & title. All that happened is that his great great grandmother or whatever boned a disgraced foreign noble. Which means nothing for Krub, apart from it being a technicality that allows him to be blessed by a disguised elven goddess. Had that not happened (as in the rest of his careers), the revelation that he is partly brettonian of ancestry would not impact his life or character at all.
I mean it has to be recent enough to justify the lady caring about him instead of the rest of the empire who all would basically 100% have some bret DNA in there at some point. If she’s just handing out blessings to whoever to better fight chaos, there’s plenty of prominent imperials who I’m sure would appreciate the boost.
If it’s not a big enough deal to impact him in the slightest or be at all relevant to his character or view of the world, it’s not a big enough deal to justify him becoming a grail knight. Same with it being a big enough deal for him to completely renounce his previous beliefs and become a champion of the lady, leaving behind a huge amount of who he was.
The last living heir of a line that was a big enough deal that the fay enchantress herself got involved with, with proof that he is who he claims he is and the skills Kruber has, would absolutely be a bigger deal than just some random foreign commoner. Particularly if the lady herself is involved enough to care about him, which is pretty much a guarantee the fay enchantress would as well, and she is by far the most important figure in that realm.
And he does, as he kinda try to speak ‘bretonnian’.
Now it’s really ‘new’ to him and he certainly don’t have much time to think about social ladder when, you know, end times and stuff comes around.
That is the weirdest way to express a newfound inner conflict caused by an identity-breaking fact about yourself. But hey, anything can be written off as “too much ale”.
Why?
When Prince Carl of Denmark became King Haakon VII of Norway, he didn’t try to speak norwegian, he spoke danish his whole life.
There’s no reason to try to change your dialect or accent just because you’re suddenly royalty of a different country.
I’d say, especially when you’re the king. There is a multitude of royalty figures who couldn’t speak their subjects’ lingo - simply because of the way people rose to power then.
Well, the thing is, norwegians and danes can understand each other just fine because modern norwegian is directly stemmed from danish. Norwegian, swedish and danish are almost the same language, they all evolved alongside each other.
So if you already know english, then you should be fine, even if it isn’t your mother-tongue.
Well you don’t really have to actually. Even when you’re not Richard I, but George I, and English is official. It’s a social thing - French is the language of politics, English is a language of peasants. Hence the weird french names for different types of meat in English.
The fact that some don’t doesnt mean that no one does. I said what I would choose. Even if I were to learn let’s say “german” as a result (and it would be hard for me :p).
