So, to try to clarify things up…
For those who don’t know. I am a Swede, and I am 38 years old.
Prior to my current employment in healthcare, I worked as a restaurant chef for ten years, solely in Sweden, and as a graphic designer when I was younger, primarily on web-based projects such as websites, WordPress, and Flash.
I went to school to gain an education as a graphics designer and chef.
I’ve never had a 4-5 week vacation in my life.
The mere thought of taking 4-5 weeks off as a chef is insane to me and would have been sinply impossible because you are rarely employed nine to five and are instead called in to work for several restaurants when they are in the sh1tter on a moments notice.
That is how you survive working in the kitchen: always pick up the phone when it rings and be ready in 5 minutes. Are you at your son’s birthday party? Give him a short hug and get to work.
As a freelance graphical designer, I can say that it was the very same thing, but I didn’t have my own family yet back then.
At my current job in healthcare, I normally have one week off each year (that is 7 days off) because it is tough to find people to fill in for me.
My goal with writing all of this stuff is to try to convey to you great people on this forum that the so-called “mandated Swedish vacation” that you like to post about is a fiction that only exists in very specific workplaces.
Most people in Sweden work hard and take pride in what they do every day.
Also, having the “right” to take a vacation does not mean you are able to do so.
You must have a replacement available to fill in for you, which is uncommon, particularly in the careers I have worked and currently are working in.
