Versus is dead, and I am sad for it

Nothing more to say.

I get the feeling that the team who developed this probably didn’t expect Versus to be a success.
They were likely thinking about implementing it in future games, or simply wanted to gain development experience with creating a PvP mode.

Yeah… same feeling here.

But it has possibilities.

Number of players lowered a lot, because of the unbalanced teams.

Players who joined games, joined the team with more players, weird.

Versus definitely has potential, but ultimately, V2 is around 7 years old. Coupled with a handful of other game modes to choose from, the game suffers from “choice fatigue.” I’m not too big in the argument of “splitting the player base”, but it’s hard to bring a game mode to a larger population without a) putting the marketing investment into it (which can be difficult to justify for an older game) and b) supporting that game mode when the main draw is adventure mode. I think V2 suffers from trying to be too many things at once, and I think adding Versus compounded that.

I do think that if Versus had been implemented earlier, the situation might have been different. However, since most players who prefer PvE games generally dislike PvP, Versus would have died sooner or later.
Of course, seeing a game mode that took several years to develop die out in less than six months seems tragic, and I sometimes wish those development resources had been spent on adding more weapons, improving QoL, or enhancing existing game modes instead. That said, from a developer’s and marketing perspective, implementing a new game mode can be a chance to attract new players, as well as an opportunity for experimentation or technical validation to be repurposed for future titles, so I don’t entirely dismiss the idea.
Right now, Darktide is following a similar path, despite the game’s balance being severely broken, they’ve implemented Havoc and Mortis Trial. There are so many things that should take priority, such as adding new weapons and enemy factions, or overhauling the skill tree.

100% agree. We are fighting the same fight again and again… with new expensive clothes.

But I want to say, I really think, that Versus still can be saved.

Many players I know like it, but stopped playing because of THE GIANT BIG UNBALANCING TEAMS SYSTEM this mode has.

I understand all you say, but is my opinion.

And also hope versus mode lives.

Thanks for the comments/opnions.

I think an issue that Versus has compared to Chaos Waste is that it’s adding something that most people didn’t really care about.

Namely pvp.

I cared about it :smiling_face_with_tear:

Versus mode released in November 2024 and gained an additional 21,000 players.

Verminous Dreams maps one and two released in December 2024 - January 2025 which kind of mixes the peak players with those interested in Versus at 15,000.

The third Verminous Dreams map released around May 2025 and both that month and the following month had around 5,500 peak players.

Now the game currently sits at around 3,000 players.

I mean an additional 2,500 - 4,500 players came to see the new adventure maps but 21,000 came to check out Versus. Those same 21,000 players left after two months, as did the others for adventure maps.

I broke it up like the following:
Yellow: Current Players / Blue: Verminous Dreams / Red: Versus

I feel like the current 3,000 players comprises of long term players mainly, plus some new players like myself, who are more interested in the cooperative aspects of the game.

Probably why you can’t find anyone for Versus right now, because they all left about 8 months ago!

I really hate the “[insert keyword here] fatigue” buzzword trend, but @Exanimia is probably right in that the player base is split in a lot of ways. You have weeklies, deeds, twitch mode, versus, adventure, chaos wastes, and the modded realm, and only 3,000 peak players in last 24 hours, with just a little over 1,000 players actually on right now, and they’re spread out all over the world joining lobbies closest to them.

That being said, I love a lot of these game modes. I don’t want to see anything less from Vermintide, especially if they make another game.

Thanks for this amazing and complete information.

I still blame the fall of versus mode, on the “new joiner, goes to team with 3 players, while team with 1 player continues alone”.

People complained A LOt about it, and idk why Fatshark didn’t solve it fast.

I will not say you all are not right.

But if there is a little possibility of taking back players to Versus mode, I want it.

One of it is make the Versus mode free to play.

Now I don’t want to sound rude, but I am repeating myself somehow, so I guess I have nothing else to say.

I still lisen to any answers.

Thank you all.

Oh yeah I didn’t really address any specific reason why Versus fell off, I was just pointing out that most players who were interested in PvP are probably not around anymore. So even if Versus was made free to play I don’t think it would change anything sadly.

Versus progress in a nutshell:

1000% this. The one major problem with Versus was the atrocious matchmaking system. Ending up with 1v3 or 1v4. A team of four seasoned veterans curb stomping teams of quickplay noobs.

The few times I finally got into games with full teams that were reasonably matched, it was honestly so much fun. I generally prefer coop PVE, but I would have played a lot more VS and still be playing it occasionally… except that those fun games were few and very far between. Most of my time attempting to play versus was just constant frustration with the matchmaking system.

The matchmaking was pointed out by so, so SO many people as THE most significant problem and frustration about the mode. And Fatshark just completely ignored it. Truly boggles my mind that they actually f*ing pulled off Versus mode, after so many years, only to then immediately let it wither and die by neglecting to fix the matchmaking.

Yup.

  • Balance issues (OP Hero classes)
  • Ruleset issues (Heroes need to go down 4 times in a row without healing to die, and there’s 5000 healing draughts and medkits on the map making this impossible)
  • Mechanic issues (Healing someone else with a medkit also heals your own wounds)
  • Bosses are useless
  • Hookrat still not fixed

Dwarf engineer is terminator vs bosses.
