This Game Needs New Maps, Not Skilltrees

Hello Fatshark

I just saw the news, new skills on the way
The Priority is New Maps, Skills can wait a year or 10, until at least 20 new maps are added

all maps look the same, except for the arena map
I maxed up all classes and stopped playing, many players the same
is too repetitive and boring

Remove region lock is also a priority, no players found, always alone with bots

thanks for reading

Skill trees add gameplay variations which multiply playability exponentially as opposed to a single map which only takes 30 minutes to finish. Every time you get a new class/build, it changes the way you play each and every map in the pool.

Each class/builds we get change the way you play and every encounter you get is made anew

With that said, we are definitely in dire need for more content like more maps gamemodes and objectives but don’t discount the skill tree’s potential for increased replayability and being able to enjoy multiple builds that suit the current maelstrom/condition

I came here to say what aurelio said.

Gotta agree with all the other comments so far. OP has a pretty trash take.

With new skill trees, we can get so much more build variety and a lot of fun while trying them all.

It means much more than maps, which become stale in a week.

…and we will get more maps anyway

People are stuck on ā€œrpgā€ skill tree when it’s not even a problem. It’s just the same thing Vt2 had but which let you take parts from the different class at the same time.

Just look at it as if it’s 2 new classes being added to each archetypes

I got flak for this opinion in another thread, but I very much agree with @derrame.

So far I have played 768 hours in Darktide and have three classes at 30; Psyker, Preacher and Veteran.

For the last 250+ hours I have played exclusively my Veteran (Quorin) with the combination of the Stub Revolver and the Power Sword.

I have also equipped my Preacher with Eviscerator and Flamer and finally my Psyker with a Deimos MK IV and Purgatus Staff.

All weapons on 380 and with the ā€œrightā€ Perks and Blessings.

Like probably most players, I experimented with different equipment and weapons at first, but soon settled on my fixed equipment for the three characters during my 768 hours.

I have no real interest in switching weapons unless Fatshark releases completely new weapons that we do not have any versions of.

In Darktide, I shoot my gun and hit things with a melee weapon.
It’s as simple as that, when you get right down to it.

I don’t have 15+ tab target skills in Darktide like I do in an MMORPG, where I’ve 5 different selectable skills in addition to the 15+, with each of those 5 selectable skills greatly altering my opening, rotation, and priority skills.

I click the left mouse button, sometimes the right mouse button and my ultimate.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see how this skill update will fundamentally change the way I play my characters.

New weapons would definitely make me want to try something new, but how will having skill builds differ from feats which is basically the same thing?

Passives that barely do anything noticeable outside of some of the rare Quality of Life ones.

The Remnant games, Division games, the new Ghost Recon games all have what I would call choices and builds.

My mod build support Archon vs my shield/life steal/heavy engineer in Remnant 2 for example are totally different playstyles.

In Darktide and with how Darktide is designed, short blitz matches, I just don’t see that happening, I’ll gladly be proven wrong, but as I see it; skills is something you will spec into once and then forget forever just like with the feats.

Just read @Heretical_Cactus reply and i am still doubtful…

Thing is Darktide is moving forward in such a slow pace that focusing on skills as an update (and probably nothing else for 6 months) feels pretty bad.

If Darktide had regular monthly updates I would have not been opposed to an update like this, but you really have to put it in perspective.

Game is still behind and will continue to be so unless Fatshark gets the gsme out of EA (which is getting closer).

Came to to say what Aurelio said.

Depens on what those skills will provide.

For example, create ranged damage focused Ogryn, or shield with taunt to hold all the aggro (real tank). Maybe there will be even support classes with meaningful boosts for the team, like placing a protective dome with Psyker (shooters at Damnation gonna cry).

Even without seeing the update yet, I already see a lot of possibilities.

I agree we need more maps.
But more different gameplay is also something that is renewing the interest in the game.
More maps is really needed… and a system to dynamically generate missions as tiles of maps, random condition(s) on part of the areas you will have to go through, random objectives, would be a great addition.

New skills, equivalent of 8 classes… this is like if they released with 12 classes instead of 4.
We will be able to combine abilities of different trees… this means lot of gameplay.

So believe me, it will change your gameplay cause you have more possibilities to create synergies between the new abilities and the blessings of your weapons.

I donā€˜t get why a skill tree designer and a map designer should be the same people as these two tasks require different skill sets.

And if they aren’t it isn’t a question of either gameplay or maps because the implementation of one doesn’t ā€žstealā€œ resources from the other.

True, but by the speed they are developing this game it seem like the more tasks they have, the slower they get to the finish line.

How many upcoming and talked about features have been scrapped from Vermintide and Darktide by now?

What happened with how ā€˜easy’ it was to create maps from tilesets in Darktide??

The problem is not really that we are getting skill points as an update.

The problem is that Fatsharks track record of not-being-on-pulse have been non-existant for three game releases now.

They are constantly living in some kind of la-la land when they should focus on actually deliver what they are talking about.

I mean who in their right mind takes on a IP the size of Warhammer and then feels good avout having 4-10k players?

If I developed a Warhammer game than I would want it to be as big as possible with a huge playerbase that’d spent a lot of money in my ingame cash shop.

I Know that Tide games and Warhammer is a bit of niche, but common now.

The playerbase are there, but Fatshark doesn’t make the playerbase stay due ro mismanagement.

I love the game, I do.

That doesn’t mean that I am not going to have opinions on where Fatshark fails and they fail at supporting their products post release

VT2 on the usual get 2 to 4 maps a year, Darktide only had 2 this year (Comm Plex was from the previous year), but there is something more telling, in VT2’s first year they also introduced only 2 new maps.

Like the biggest flaw FS has is that they are bad on release day, and then spend a lot of time fixing stuff (Like holes in the maps, stuck in bound and stuff like that), and making the console game.

Which is precisely what the player data from the last two maps shows. I love the new maps, but new classes refresh every aspect of the game.

This…

I want also new maps… but new ā€œskill treeā€ will refresh the gameplay of the game and offer so many gameplay possibilities that I am even more happy to see these changes than getting 2 new maps (and I won’t argue they were not needed… they were badly needed…)

We need both and more, I think.

To iterate on this:

You can now be a Waystalker bow Kerilian, that has the Invisibility ultimate.
Or you can be a Mercenary Kruber with the Footnight dash.

It’s pretty cool.

new enemies > the possibility of another recycled map

Actually what I’d really like are new Biomes.

How about

  • one of the Plant/Forest areas tasked with providing Hive Cities with Oxygen?
  • an Area of the upper hive/Spire?
  • One of the mines that deliver the vaunted Atoma Ore?
  • a Free Trader vessel Nurgle cultists wantd to smuggle staff or stuff into Tertium? (this could be even the perfect level to introduce a Plague Marine as Boss)
  • A Fortified Bunker/Baracks Area occupied by the once Loyal Moebian 6th to strike at the enemies heart?

That would be refreshing map wise!

I’d be all in on Gene Stealer Cults or a Slaneshi Cult who use the current disruption to participate in the carnage…
I’d also love a Space Hulk full of Orks arriving and start to invade the City

BUT I think that’s a little much to ask ^^

However - as mentioned before - Plague Marines as Bosses?
Plague Bearers and Nurglings as Elites? Would fit very well I think .
