They don’t even look rugged. I can’t even use the correct words to appropriate describe what they look like for fear of being banned. They’re that bad. The players just want NORMAL faces. Not greek gods (despite Greek God tier beauty being common among the protagonists of many 40k stories). Simple normal and mundane faces would be a huge breath of fresh air.
I’d rather we had sliders to sculpt our own faces rather than relying on presets. Would be easier for everyone and would empower player expression and creativity. This kind of feature is essential in Dark Souls, for example, precisely because the developer understands that player choice is paramount to player expression, especially in an RPG where you build your own character. Darktide talked a big game about how it’d be departing from the flavorful Ubersreik in exchange for letting players create their own characters through backgrounds, customization, careers, setting their own story, and so on. Yet thus far the depth for doing so has been restrictive, preventing us from truly developing our characters in any meaningful capacity.
That and also I can probably sculpt a better face than what Fatshark has done.
Pop Quiz. Is this a guy?
I want my zealot to look like Herrscher of Flamescion from Honkai Impact
You, me, and others have talked about this before. Others have been trashed hard for simply requesting “average”, god forbid you ask for diversity for Ugly, Average, and beautiful.
Personally I say screw all the naysayers with their fake 40k=ugly narrative, live up to the the 40k official artwork and the fact that it is fictional. Make pretty faces, average faces, and ugly faces. Most importantly though for the Emperor, buff the damn plasma gun.
Common two disingenuous arguments:
Reject = ugly. Simply untrue beautiful and rich people commit evils just as well. Not mutually exclusive. Also just read any of the background you get to pick in game, simply fake news.
40k = ugly. Also untrue, see all 40k official artworks and cover arts for books.
and from there they just repeat these two into a loop.
So yeah theres like 3 faces for females and the same 3-4 hairstyles every time in game. We all ended up discount SoB in the end. Not really sure why there are people who only want ugly as hell faces and don’t want other people to enjoy having a character they can be attached to.(You can bet I got Steel Legion to cover up that trash of a character I have and finally like using)
It’s not just the rabble. I remember reading a reponse from @Fatshark_Hedge about this on steam and his response boiled down to,“Mission accomplished!” - citation: ugly female character :: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide The Mourningstar - General Discussions
Then the thread was shortly locked thereafter. There has been similar threads on Reddit as well that gained traction. So this is hardly a minority opinion. Anyways, it’s not necessarily the responses of simpletons and nincompoops that offends me personally, but the silence on this from Fatshark’s end. If your 3D modellers are incapable of making decent faces then give us the tools to do so. I’ve been sculpting my own faces in RPGs and MMOs since the early 3D era when games allowed it.
Wow… I didn’t know that occurred, that is absolutely insane. Thanks for bringing that topic up, explains a lot from FS. Extremely unfortunate… So be it, covering up atrociously created clones it is. sad
That’s the whole conundrum as some people would find most faces ugly and make them puke, and others might find they have character, look rugged/average/whatever-but-not-hideous. And it’s obviously not that dichotomic.
Whatever we want to qualify it, that design approach has been validated by FS AND Games Workshop based on the artists concept arts and work, and fit their interpretation of 40K for Darktide.
(and I’m personally very happy with it - just as other players)
There are far more important aspects that could be improved and adding new faces can only end up very low on the list.
And it’s very unlikely the team will have to reconsider how the faces look based on a few people asking for more fair/pleasing/non-troglodyte-borderline-vomit-inducing faces (which is a personal perception), because their game experience is impaired by the current selection.
The faces in this game just look plain dysgenic.
I wonder how game studios that foster that kind of culture and attitude deal with seeing games like genshin impact absolutely mog their own games in terms of profit and community goodwill while taking a completely different approach both to beauty in their art direction and overall attention to detail and game polish. Based on what I’ve seen of fatsharks history with the evolution of vermintide 2 over its lifespan and the release of darktide they look like bumbling fools in comparison. Must be that midwit meme again.
Fatshark is a Swedish developer, everybody looks like that here!
So the studio is “punishing” its overseas customers out of envy and/or self-hatred then. I guess that’s not hard to believe.
Yes, everyone should have it equally bad!
I guess that explains Hedge’s bitter, spiteful attitude then.
Oh god, they are back …
Shoo now.
I agree, but please keep it on topic.
Hardship and malnutrition ruin any benefits to beauty ones genes might bring, though.
But sure, give people the option to choose pretty faces. Why not.
While Sienna and Saltzpyre were horrific to behold, Kerillian was almost pretty. I like her alien elven features. Kruber had a good face methinks.
So it’s not like Fatshark can’t model faces. Seems like they went with gritty, gruff weathered and scarred by life as a stylistic choice.
Saltzpyre looked his age:
I want to say 50s or something? Anyway he looked as I imagined an old tired Witch Hunter in this universe to be.
I’ll give you Witch though since in certain angles her face looks off to me. Dwarf and Kurber though are great.
Dwarf:
As you can see. Dwarves are so manly they override their facial structures with their amazing beards. Enough said.
Kruber:
Same deal here too. His beard empowers him to legendary proportions.
In conclusion, let us put beards on women, it’s the only way.
I’m convinced a dwarf wrote this. Bardin, is that you?
If you look at Kruber’s grail knight face, it’s chiselled and amazing. I just wish we could keep the helmet off. As for bardin, if his beard glitches while switching helmets, he kinda looks like an uncle that is super cool. Sienna and Saltzpyre are the epitome of the warhammer fantasy universe though with their tired worn looks. Kerillian is…well she’s Kerillian.
