The price of running live service such as Darktide

Recently I discovered the DRG (yeah yeah it’s been around since the existence of rock and stone) and was surprised how the game respects your time and what small amount of money it wants in return.

But DRG has a very low fi aesthetics and has one model of dwarf of only one gender for all the classes all voiced by a single voice actor. And the same logic goes for tools these classes share. Also no high budget cutscenes or actually any cutscenes at all.

DRG also doesn’t have dedicated servers even on consoles and it’s missing crossplay (like Steam/Microsoft Store/Xbox).

On the other hand the DRG has so much things done right like progression and the absence of gambling mechanics in it. Tons of cosmetics which you buy for in-game currencies.

Now I am wondering could it be viable at all to run such a model with a such high definition game like Darktide?

The production is way more taxing with Darktide and at the same time it’s unclear if people would play DarkTide if it wasn’t it’s look.

What do you think about it? Would you rather play DarkTide if it would be just a bit more graphically advanced than recently released Wh40k Boltgun game? But with less frustrating progression practices.

Sometimes I feel maybe all these additional money are justified and sometimes I am furious about another cosmetics that costs like a full game.

UPD: Fixed mistype. I was saying “furious”, not “curious” about costs of cosmetics.

UPD2: By a bit more graphically advanced than Boltgun I mean something like DRG with low polygon limit, limited models (literally one per specie). I should’ve used word “stylized” really. In other words not attempting photorealistic presentation.

I want a pub to buy a round for my Strike Team. I know it’s a 40K game, but no pub on the Mourningstar is too grimdark.

I would not play Darktide if it looked like a ps3 game.

I’m fine spending more money to have a more modern/technologically advanced experience. Hell, I bought a 4070 TI just to play Darktide

I’m (probably) in the minority here when I say I’d love a much lower res/more stylized game.

I want 165+ frames at all times plus more content pumped out much faster.

I only care about the combat pretty much nothing else. Probably why DRG didn’t do it for me. Too much digging. I don’t want to farm nitra to shoot my gun.

Sure, but again: “That guy in Fatshark’s management, he’s got a cozy job!”.

As much as I enjoy Darktide, if GSG had Fatshark’s budget and could rework the combat to be more snappy and satisfying with varied enemy encounters, I’d prefer Deeprock Galactic to Darktide because it’s a lot better game in most ways.

Fatshark really need to invest in some better equipment! :pick: :beers: :man_office_worker:

DRG is pro-player, DT is pro-investor

I paid approximately $70 (Australian) to purchase both the base game and EVERY Premium Cosmetic on DRG. On Darktide that won’t even get you 4 half-arsed Premium Cosmetic sets, let alone the base game alongside them.

Hence why I don’t buy Darktide’s Premium Cosmetics.

Doesn’t help their case that not a single cosmetic is better than the ones you get for free.

Not a jab at you @Khorne_Dawg

Just ironic how different GSG’s and Fatshark’s business models and community interaction are.

Ecclesiarchy Approved Diadem would like a word (using the male Judge Zealot voice)

You speak about Darktide?

Imagine Darktide with static guns specs. Like every weapon out there would be 76% on each of it’s specs without any gambling.

The best part about Darktide is shuffling your build to try something else. It would be awesome if the same was true for the guns - everything swappable and reversible. This is viable since DRG does exactly that.

I constantly find myself avoiding even running Darktide at this point since I can spend the whole evening for nothing. And I run DRG because I know I will advance a bit every game.

I love Darktide so much but we’re in manipulative relationship

I’ve already suggested that Darktide would have been much better if the weapons didn’t have stats and the only thing you could choose was blessings similar to DRG’s [Overclock].

Actually, RNG stats could have worked if there was an incentive for experimenting, such as giving up stability for firepower, but as it stands, you basically want to hit 80% in every single stat, which is neither possible nor interesting.

Some players dislike Deep Rock’s Deep Dives, but I think they’re fantastic, and anything similar to that in Darktide would be :cook: .

  1. The locks need to be broken.
  2. We need more Plasteel, either via increased Plasteel per drop or lowered Plasteel prices for Crafting.
  3. We need the ability to design our weapons’ specs from scratch - that way we can get all 80% specs at a higher Ordo Docket cost or something.
  4. We need the ability to choose our Blessings and their Tiers like we can now do with the Perks, instead of having to farm them via the Gacha RNG.

Once these issues are fixed, the Crafting System will be perfect.

All of these, plus I’d like Fatshark to improve Darktide a little bit.

I understand that I may be completely out of line and should look for another game, but I truly believe that Darktide should accomplish more than just move from point A to point B while fighting/surviving Heretics.

The combat is amazing, and the majority of games don’t seem the same because of the random spawning, which is a striking contrast to Aliens: Fireteam Elite, but I’d want to see Darktide evolve into more than just Vermintide with firearms.

Damn, Deep Rock with Darktide’s budget, better combat and graphics…I can’t get it out of my head.

Kinda funny you mention that cause one of my favorite games in 2023 was Valheim and it looks old.

Graphics got nothing on Gameplay. Gameplay is king!

You’re absolutely NOT out of line. Darktide could be the best 40K FPS ever if it continues down the correct path. Darktide’s portrayal of 40K itself, its core gameplay and especially its PERFECT SOUNDTRACK (:man_cook: )… these things are what make Darktide my favourite 40K title, and it brings me abundantly horrid pain knowing that its infinite potential could go down the drain.

if it wasnt for its aestethics and graphic fidelity, no i wouldnt invest that much playtime.

the moment i got that gritty warhammer vibe i was hooked, blood guts rust, everyone dies for the emperor, whats not to love?

drg could have the best gameplay, with these light hearted, stylized graphics its absolutely not my thing.

in every game i go for immersion first, got my fallouts modded to the brim for that matter.

if a game doesnt scratch that itch for me it might not exist as well.

usually i buy a new rig every 2 years at the latest(every year in the years that followed quake 1) to keep up with graphical advancements and i definately want something in return for that investment.

started boltgun, for right now im totally into warhammer, but couldnt get around the pixel arts.

i knew what i was getting into but i suffered through decades when these were all that was possible and i would have killed for cutscene quality graphics.

so yeah, right now darktide is pretty much all i play, everytime i “force” myself to start something else i miss the frantic action and visuals.

tbh no!
I dont like pixelart, i dont need UE5 ultra realistic stuff, my PC couldnt handle it anyway, but please no pixel or retro grafics.
Gameplay is more important than grafic, but i play for 35 years and i want some decent to good grafics paired with good gameplay.
If the price is shallow marketing and RNG well, it’s bearable to sme degree, but i wouldnt exchange the one for the other.
