this has been said plenty of times before im sure but the “only in private” portion of the description is the worst and NEEDS to be removed… like anyone who doesnt have friends who play the game end up having to deal with not being able to even hope to coordinate a group willing to que up with ya again to help ya till ya get it. please just let us earn it in public lobbies…

Beats the hell out of the time when people used to grief PUGs all the time with some of these awful penances.
It’s quite easy with a proper set-up. Take an ogryn with shield and have him thwack the first daemonhost you get -they’re guaranteed on power failure maps- then back into a corner and plant the shield. Take all the time to repeatedly head-pop you need while the other two guys watch for specials. And that’s that. You don’t even have to finish the map.
Sadly, the private game restriction is the biggest barrier. Fortunately, I got all those ones before they enacted that, but they did it because of the overwhelming response against those being attempted in PUGs. I’m afraid this is a situation where they can’t please everyone.
true, they could make a discord they link in the launcher that you can go to so its even easier to find people in that light.

I am like the OP… I would prefer that we can do it in a normal game while playing normally.
I have given up these penances cause of that. Only Ogryn has a private penance not completed cause it was not before they implemented the restriction.

I would say that this is a good thing.
I would be happy about new penances.
That said, i still think that private only penances are not a great idea.
Players should be able to try and complete penances in public, and then have the ability to do them in private, if they want to.
Penances should not be designed in a way that makes people play extra bad (or hurt the party in an other way).

Some of them actually make sense and teach good things, but others certainly do not.
There are a few zealot penances that teach you to run on low hp, and psyker penances that teach you to focus down specials and elites with brainburst.
Those are nice.
A psyker should manage their peril and not blow up.
One of the new penances teaches a psyker to use the ult in order to prevent blowing up, which is good.
A redacted penance requires you to kill elites by suiciding yourself in., incentivizing psykers to do the opposite of what a good player would do (at least you only need to do this once).
Ogryn ult and zealot grenades are valuable tools for control. Especially against groups of elites, which can pose a massive threat.
But instead of penances that tell us to use these tools against groups of elites, players are taught to waste them on hordes of trashmobs.
Knock down 60 enemies with a single ult as ogryn (bad).
Knock down 5000 enemies as ogryn (bad).
Stun 1500 enemies with stun grenades (bad).
Then there is the penance that has you charge 4 enemy ogryn at once, but this one incentivizes players to NOT use their ult when there are 3 ogryn, or a bunch of other elites, since a 4th ogryn might show up. Although this one is not nearly as bad as it used to be, when it required 6 ogryn, and ogryn enemies were more scarce, it would be better to have the player knock over 4 elite enemies of any type, x times.
I also have no idea why they made this one private only, since it is actually very easy to do in a pub. Also, doing this does not negatively affect the rest of the party, or require the teammates to do anything crazy.

Here I totally agree… nothing learn you to use the Ogryn ult, especially if you consider that the ult is often an annoyance for a zealot when he started to clean an horde.
This penance in particular should be achievable in public because if a psyker is the only person left alive on the team they may have to brain burst a monster to death by themselves. So you can’t even get it “legitimately” during the course of normal play.

That is a very valid complaint, though in theory with good use of barrels you could probably circumvent it with just 2-3 humans in the party. This is where no friendly fire is actually kind of a pain.

The penance has to be done on heresy or higher.
Even on regular heresy, it is quite easy to get the bots killed.
But there’s no guarantee you can kill the bots on demand when a boss shows up. If you kill them ahead of time you’ll be clearing maps with only two human players.

Few of the legacy penances were really meant to test skill. I’m not really sure what they’re supposed to test to be fair. Creative deaths perhaps? Dunno. Goes with a list of odd game design choices.

I mean yes but I stand by it considering that was assuming you could also only find a single other person to do it with you. You can get a boss spawn pretty early and I don’t think you even need to finish the mission to get it?

It’s a stupidly designed penance to begin with. I get that making it private just adds more hoops to jump through but I kinda prefer that to encouraging people to beg PUGs to not attack a boss to get it.
Again I feel like better social functions in built into the game would be the best fix here than making it public again.

Correct. The moment you kill the boss (with the requirements met), you get the penance completed.
You could
- pick feats that maximize your Brain Burst dps
- restart a power outage mission over and over until you get a demon host at an early spawn
- let the bots die to the first horde
- have an ogryn player with shield, wo harrasses the demon host, then stands in a corner with the shield up
- Brain Burst the boss to death by pressing 2-3 buttons (BB and quell, maybe ult), without even having to move
- quit mission as soon as the boss is dead
All it takes is 2 players with minimal skill and a few minutes of your time (you can ofc do it without power outage, but it will take longer due to requiring more mission restarts).
It really is very easy to do.
It was relatively difficult though, when it required 100% boss dmg and Demon Hosts were not a thing yet. Good times.
