Sound will cut out at random , which leads to a freeze, and crash. Never happened before newest penance update

It rarely crashes the game for me, I only get disconnected, how can I send a log to help track down the issue if im not crashing?

I just switched the installation location from a PCIE 3.0 nvme to a 4.0, that seems to fixed the audio cutting out and freezing. Been playing since 5 hours now, without it happening again. will report back if it comes back.

Cool if that helps, but can’t be that it’s reason for everyone else having the same problem. Plenty of people probably on pcie 3, and not having problems.

you can potentially upload the latest log in appdata. But currently we don’t get any stall warnings in the log, so I doubt it has any info in live sadly.

On the bright side it sounds like the soundteam have detected some issue with sending alot of commands to the audioengine which can potentially be the cause of this. Not sure why it crashes for some.

Could be unrelated to direct storage in that case, but we are investigating this locally and working on a optimizing that code as well.

please tryout these instructions and let me know if it helps

if the issue direct storage related this workaround should use the old file reader system.

Let me know if it works or not.

I have the same issue with the sound and then a disconnect/crash, followed the steps, as a result, the sound stopped working three times in the same match, the first two times, the sound stopped for a shorter duration than usual, and the game didn’t disconnect or crash (I thought the issue was mostly fixed), the third time the sound stopped working I got disconnected, error 2001/2014, so sadly nothing changed except for an decreased chance of getting disconnected/crashing.

Beside trying to disable direct storage you can also try this that seems to help some

have you changed any settings such as *use_blocking_io * here? or only direct storage?

This looks like it could be a real deadlock and I know that setting has been true due to this reason.

got a reply from another dev that he has a fix on this specific deadlock when direct storage is disabled.

Exact same issue, except on Gamepass. Tried the disable_Dstorage thing, turning off ray tracing and a lot of other settings, reinstalled and verified multiple times. The audio ā€˜crackles’ every now and then, like a warning I’m about to crash. Then it cuts out, and it either crashes then, or I’m able to play a bit longer with vastly reduced performance. The issue disappeared shortly after the last patch, only to return, and I have no idea how to fix it. My crash logs are empty.

I can’t pin down a consistent time when it happens. Sometimes I go two hours without it happening, or I crash four times in one mission. Drivers updated and reinstalled as well. If anyone has a solution that’s worked for them, I would really appreciate it, I’m at my wits end.

I moved the game to my other SSD and it was fixed.

What? Where? I don’t have use_blocking_io , or data storage anywhere?

Reinstalled , messed with graphics, options in nvidia panel. Tried to set everything as low as I can , 60 fps cap. Still have weird audio, and fps freezes, dips, switched audio to stereo headphones which seemed to help. And if I manually set audio device to what I have, it crashes the game? So left that at auto detect or default, can’t remember what it was for that one. Anyway, finished 1 match. 2nd match crash right before the end, classic really.

Same problem after penance update. Sound goes off, then game freezes, then it continues without tocuh to a server (no hits register, enemies and teammates flow in the air), then disconnection usually with error 2014, 2001 and some other with option to reconnect.
This happenns almost every match, multiple times.
I verified the game multiple times, I reinstalled it several times, made lowest setting – nothing helped. I thought it may have something to do with connection (two times during this period I saw red text in game telling servers have low connection and I may have issues), but everythings else besides Darktide seems fine (Vermintide 2 plays smoothly). Very sad

I’ll try solutions dev posted here and reply later.

Don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it actually helped.
Just ran a mission with no issues with sound, freeze or lag. Felt very refreshing.

Updt: So for those who wonder where is this file, it’s in AppData\Roaming\Fatshark\Darktide, like in this post

And appears you have to redact this file every time before launch of the game. Sad.

can i ask what kind of drive the previous was?

Something unique with it like hybrid disk (SSD and HDD in one) or anything else that makes it stand out?

i think the crash you had was a bug when disabling dstorage, we should have updated the beta branch and fixed this. Do note that this code path is much more untested than the other one since most are using dstorage.

my sound issues have gone away, dunno what i did but it fixed it, now I just have the performance issues everyone else has been having

same deadlock here that should now be fixed on the expermintal branch
