I played moonstone to death.
Amazing game.
Been playing Doom Dark Ages. Higher system requirements yet well optimised.
Instant, responsive and very smooth frame times. It is amazing the min FPS it maintains, even when it gets busy with enemies, explosions and particle effects.
The missions loads in 3-4 secs.
Actually āfeelsā good to play in movement. Like Overwatch level responsiveness, which I also play.
Then I go back to Darktide. Large input latency, varied frame times, abilities not registering/delayed, laggy servers.
This all day long.
Darktide tide is good, it could be great if it didnāt have so many issue like this and balancing.
Take a break. Go outside. Read a book. Play something else. Call your family or friends. Learn something new. Fix that thing thatās broken or isnāt finished. Go exercise. Stretch. Drink some water.
TL:DR try doing something else.
i wish i could get into it and this comes from an og doomer with the first 2 games on a 486 in 1994, final doom, hell revealed 1+ 2 and countless other custom mega wads.
currently enjoying the vibe of voxel gzdoom, captures the essence better than 3d models in my book.
as for the newer doom titles, 2016 got the pacing just right with the option to turn off every distracting rainbow effects.
enemies in stupor are visible enough for a glory kill i dont need em glowing like a christmas tree.
up come doom eternal and i loathe the monkey bar, mario jump crap.
fast? yes please but this fake verticality was off for various reasons.
when i play doom i want doom, not a platformer.
same goes for the loot pinatas, green bling, blue bling⦠bright blingā¦
yes doom 2 was more colorful back in the day but kept the overall tone.
map design in eternal, if you ignore the flying bars, was ok in terms of mood, still jump jump jump⦠itsa meee marioā¦
well dark ages seems to take a 180° again, only this time its a quicktime shield parry - red light/green light stuff that really takes me out of the action.
doom is running circles around hundreds of enemies, tricking them into infighting.
whereas now they shoot a phalanx of colored balls and green is the only path to rebound and parry through⦠no agency, no freedom of engagement.
add to that weapons that absolutely dont click with me and i dont āfeelā doom.
super shotgun in pedersoli flintlock my ass.
no chaingun but a skull grinder.
plasma gun ripped from quake nailgun model.
ball on chain⦠tube?
so desperate for something ānewā as long as it aint the same look no more.
icing on top is the emo-dragon with bike pedals, what the fugg???
doomguy doesnt need an overgrown bat-lizard.
heās the last man standing in shuttle, his mates killed by demons, what more āstoryā do i need for doom?
besides, the theme i dig for 30 years :future setting, uac fuggs up, grab your shotgun and kick ass.
anyways, thats my rant of disappointment over the first doom title (okay doom64 and playstation i didnt buy cause consoles, though for whatever reason i had the 32x version )
in history iām not buying
bad things happen outside if i try to āenjoyā it
even āone starā encounter can get you in trouble and thats me staying within the speed limit, only ignoring the police car behind me.
aint nowhere written you cant take turns at the max speed limit, they pulled me over thinking iād try to give āchaseā
rtards in uniformā¦
now if i went full trevor like i āenjoyā in my favorite passtime i dont get rid of 5 stars after 5 minutesā¦
so basically iām bored outside
Oh Mr. Fancypants and his rich-boy 486, please, I was Dooming on a 386 with the screen shrunk to 20% in order to get above 5 FPS.
(Joking aside the 486 was a mindblower wasnāt it?)
well it wasnt easy scraping together 3000dm as a 14 year old back in the day, i tell you that
birthday and christmas budgets for the coming years went into that.
good thing though, the dude that sold it already had:
wolfenstein 1/2
doom 1/2
heretic
and some other, rather low quality 3d shooters on it.
still got a good collection with the pc already.
1995 came the pentium 90
and by 1996 i had the diamond monster 3d combined with a matrox mistique 4mb(which was crap on its own, but we didnt know better back then) to play glorious gl-quake in 30fps 640x480.
console command ātimerefreshā and seeing the number gave me a boner
Bruh nostalgia overload, my first GPU was a DIamond 3D and seeing glow effects in Quake 2 for the first time shattered my understanding of what games could look like. And like you said that was about the lowest tier GPU at the time- upgrading to a Voodoo was another giant leap.
yes the voodoo rocked back in the day
quake 2 was the time of the first local mini lanparties where we destroyed peeps in q2dm1 the edge
bnc serial lan, rj45 wasnt a thing then
thats when 3d shooters really took off.
sin
half life
soldier of fortune
kingpin
project igi
though superior graphic fidelity, apart from id software titles, they didnt keep up with the flow of games like duke3d etc.
but lets be honest, we were graphicwhores back then
and lets not forget the āstinkersā like shat-ners teckwar
best ātranslationā gibberish we had in german and this is why it stuck to me for 30 odd years was āmortal coilā
āBenutzer mƶgen sprechen Worte in mortal coil.Tun dies erschallen wave Akte zu ihre harte fƤhrtā
yeah 90s were wild and a great time to grow into gaming
btw,i canāt overstate what a difference that first voodoo card and glquake made. software quake gave me ca. 14 fps in timerefresh in 320x240 on a pentium 166, and then glquake did 28 fps in 640x480, so 4x the rez and twice the frames. actually, we heard such incredible things and went by train to a neighboring town just to get a glance, and iirc we got right back with the cards in their big fancy boxes.
I did not expect to wander into this thread and find a nostalgic trip back to 80s-90s gaming. Ah! What joy that was. It still makes me laugh that my parents banned myself and my siblings from playing Wolf3D and Double Dragon because they were too violent. They lost that argument in the end and I was playing Doom etc like everyone else.
Ye Gads, Iāve written and deleted so many memories in this one reply, but Iāve just remembered a core one. Our first CD drive. It didnāt auto eject. You had to push it in to unlatch it and it would pop a bit out under spring pressure, pull the tray out, PULL UP ITS LID, put the disc in, close it, push it in to latch it. 1995 was a wild time to be alive.
Hereās another bit of nostalgia, remember having to set up the sound settings for games? As in when you had to choose from the all the bits, like something was 220 and ports and stuff, like a second installation after youād already installed the game. Or when you got your first 1gb HDD? Mind. Blowing. I can remember the pain in desparately wanting Settlers II but having to wait months for my birthday.
Damn, I feel old.
yeah parenting was a āspeech checkā back in the day.
through trial and error they found a way to convey āmedia competenceā before it was a thing.
movies like terminator and rambo was peak and no matter which friends house you were at someone pulled by a vhs player and we had an improvised gore session
setting i think was iq 220 amongst others, depending which soundblaster midi card your rig had back then.
still remember the sound check of terminator future shock something⦠āspace station mercuryā
lotsa crackling c-picture live acting cut scene-goodness.
