I don’t feel it is false that, instead of releasing an update about itemization when it is done and 2 weeks out (like other major updates, including the penances rework), they communicated that the itemization update is on the way, but possibly not complete, and may come in 1 month (fingers crossed and testing permitting).
That the wording is clunky doesn’t really negate that, I don’t think. But we’re not going to agree, and that’s OK. I don’t think it makes you “subhuman” or stupid, and I don’t think you are arguing in bad faith or anything else. We just see this differently.
They didn’t actually communicate that. That’s just your reading of what Strawhat might’ve actually meant when he wrote it.
That’s precisely the issue with their communication. People want to not be left to guessing. In that sense, this is less communication, not more, than if they had said “it’s not ready yet, blog with more info coming” (plus if they REALLY wanted to include “but it might come on the 25th, no promises” then how about literally the quoted sentence you just read?)
It’s a pretty low stakes context in the end but just because it’s low stakes doesn’t mean this isn’t true, and I feel like I’m in an alternate reality when I read how this is supposedly the better communication that was asked for. The “damned if they do damned if they don’t” is really just not fitting here. If this is “damned if they do, damned if they don’t” to them, then I really wonder if that’s not how they think about all the other miscommunications and bad info they’ve given out, where the stakes were quite a bit higher (like pre-release promises of things) and that just lets me understand how they’re not improving their modus operandi.
Ye. It describes an update. It describes the update will have more features than are on the bullet point list. It describes that itemization is being worked on. It describes that itemization is part of the update. It describes the update is on the 25th.
It does not say it’s “possibly” part of the update. It does not say there’s multiple parts to the update.
All the info we have from this blogpost adds up to that. Again, honest mistake, whatever. The mistake here isn’t them communicating more though.
In a way btw the fact that you read it differently means that you add your own context information to the statement, in this case: “It’s Fatshark, so there’s no way it’ll be ready even if it does say so technically”. That’s proving my point because you’re implicitly admitting that the info is badly phrased and the communication is lacking and people have to look at it through a filter of “It’s Fatshark, so this means…”
Which in itself is the issue with Fatshark communication. There’s many other companies where you could just take a statement like this at face value.

That’s not what they said, though. I will take it apart sentence by sentence:
Meaning: “Here, Strawhat announces the date of the update, starting the syntax that everything below is of relevance to this date”
Meaning: “This is implying that the following features are in the aforementioned patch, but there is more on top of it. It’s just two examples of the content.”
Meaning: "Here we get the first two features namedropped. A new mission and new weapons.
Meaning: "We get to the critical part. Strawhat says they’re still working on the itemization. This is neither a confirmation nor a denial of it’s inclusion in the patch. Just the information they are currently working on it.
In the English language, when you have a date given for a task to be accomplished, telling the person who you are doing the task for that you are still working on it, is an indicator that you aim to accomplish said task in the timeframe you have given.
The “still” is an indicator that the task is not accomplished yet. However, that does not imply that it won’t be done by the date announced.
But it gets better!
Strawhat follows this information up immediately by calling Itemization a part of the update.
Note the important syntax. This entire post talks specifically about one update, the next update on 25th of june. And in this context Itemization is called a “part of the update”.
There is no ambiguity, there is no “confusing language” or unclear communication as people giving the benefit of doubt want to imply. It is in fact crystal clear. The one update, the next update on the 25th of june we are talking about, is the update Itemization is a part of.
THAT is what the English language says and the written word here means. It’s not just a declaration of intent, it’s a factual, objective and definitive statement. X is part of Y. Sunday is part of the week. Butter is part of the chicken sandwich. Itemization is part of the update.
We then get the information that they’re currently in testing and are working on a dev blog. This part is again neither a refutation nor an approving statement about the delivery of said patch. Just an as-is of the current situation. But that too implicates the intent to get it done.
So you see, there is a very clear synposis here. The original post is not confusing at all.
Summarized, it says ALL of the following:
→ There will be an update on 25th of june 2024
→ There will be a New Mission and New Weapons
→ Itemization is part of the update
→ The update is currently in testing
→ They are also working on a dev blog on top of all that
THAT is what the original post, by the English dictionary and the God Emperor’s promise, says. Anything else is interpretation and not factual.

Itemization is still being worked on, it may or may not be part of the update on the 25th. It really just depends on how things go; if it needs more time to cook then it will be given more time to cook.
I’d like crafting to come out sooner rather than later just as much as y’all do but I’d also much rather get a good/complete system than an unfinished one y’know?
You’ll have to explain how that’s relevant? Is there some weird Britishism that makes ‘oh yeah the thing we said was part of something? Totally not meant to be taken to mean the thing is part of something’ a sane and normal thing to say.

It says. In plain language. ‘Itemization part of the update’. Not multiple updates. Not a failure to include it in the update. Itemization part of the update. Fatshark could easily fail to include it, and they’re trying to ‘clarify’ that that might happen, but that’s what it says.
Nothing about itemization ‘being worked on’ changes the fact that the plain reading is ‘itemization is coming on the 25th’. If you actually teach English, you’re doing your students a disservice.
And I’m with you on that. I love the stuff Fatshark releases and was always a supporter. But precisely because of that I am breaking it down. I am definitely not the only one who read this announcement the way I just described.
If Fatshark wants to continue growing and getting hypetrains ran for them, they need to improve on that aspect. Guiding expectation is one of the most critical skills when communicating, both in Sales as well as Marketing!
For comparisons sake, here’s what actual good communication looks like:
It’s double relevant because players keep calling it the crafting update, but Fatshark calls it the itemization update. See how someone who is good at communication sees this and tempers expectations? It’s straight to the point too and there is zero confusion regarding the state of the update he’s talking about.
Meanwhile Fatshark is setting their own community up for disappointment by not clearing up the itemization vs crafting update part.
FS is primarily Swedish speaking, and while it’s a part of the world where they speak English more than others, it still remain that it might explain some weird tournure of phrases
Yes, I understand that part - but they still outright said it would be part of the update. There is no complication or ambiguity, the words are right there and have meanings. The only way you could take them to mean something else is by filtering them through some kind of Fatshark Filter™ where any promise shouldn’t be taken as binding because they’re too incompetent to provide dates accurately.
