Shieldgryns Deserve Better

Generally like 900+ DPS (baseline, pre-blessing) is what I’d consider great DPS.

And yeah obviously anything with +75% power will do some pretty ridiculous DPS against just about everything, but I sure hope they balance that really obviously OP blessing pretty soon. (We just really need a good blessings pass balancing them all to normalized numbers instead of some being 75% dps increases and others being like…4%.)

Not sure what you mean about Power Cells. When hordes are in your face it’s not like you have to brace the thing to clear them effectively (and while the equip time isn’t instant, it’s not slow either; worst case is you’re spamming push out of the Cell-carry animation, you get the push off, and then you can switch (and/or dodge back) to start firing).

Against shooters, any random melee will be fine. You don’t need a horde-clear weapon for that, you just need to tie them up in melee (and Bully/Maul/Shovel are all fine at clearing them after you do). So it doesn’t seem like you’d even care about optimal horde-clear or the Stubber, because against ranged enemies the main thing that matters is if you get them all tied up so they can’t shoot; they’re not great at meleeing back.

I’d like to add pushing to that idea since getting nuked by a firing squad while my shield is blocking me from even seeing the shooters feels terrible.

Yeah… Got lucky with an Emperor’s gift and got a really good BB with nice blessings. Now, running anything else on Heresy+ might allow me to delete Crushers faster, but I also become target practice for every single gunner. Although BB also gets boring after a while.

Did you read my reasons for why that’s not the case? Ugh, don’t bother. I can tell you’re just going to rebuke everything, and I’m not going to have this discussion with someone who thinks the Stubber is a suitable replacement for a melee weapon when you’re running around in melee range. Fatshark improved Ogryn horde clear for all weapons today, so someone there shares my mindset.

I did, and I explained why it was wrong because those shooters just don’t do great in melee (mostly due to there not being enough of them). So regardless of what melee weapon you use while tying up ranged, you’re going to clear them easily (barring any complicating enemies showing up). Any melee ties up ranged troops once you get to melee range. It was never an issue of the melee weapons themselves (and the changes today didn’t change those melee weapons, they changed the properties of stunning at range, which happened before you got into melee).

Evry ogryn range weapon is very good at horde clear.

The primary problem with the shield for me is how much it blocks your sight.
Buffing the bleed feat is something i can agree on regardless of the shield performance.
A good improvement would be to add an block/attack mechanic like flail and shield in V2,
But I’m afraid that in unison with the bleed/damage reduction would make the ogryn too much unkillable.

The shield is a joke weapon and I will not show you love for using it.

When it can kill a pox walker on damnation per light swing then I will consider it good. Its an insult to all Ogryn that these 900 pound gorilla men can hit a poxwalker with a torso sized steel box four times and the thing will still be alive. That goes for the power maul too.

But he does CC!

To quote my Ogryn bro: Don’t care.
My thunder hammer does basically as much CC on heavy attacks as the power maul and shield, but does almost twice the damage on first target. So it can kill a pox walker on every swing. For that matter my two handed power maul does the same, which means the ogryn power maul (despite being the same size and wielded by a man who can arm wrestle space marines and win) some how does less damage than a normal human with a weight on a stick.

Its not fluffy
and it feels bad
and it is a pointless distinction.

Btw i just found out that theoretically exist a blessing available for the shield that makes all the enemies you hit target you. Not saying that it’s a rediming quality of the shield though.

I had to check that (which is not that I wouldn’t believe you) and I found the same, but does anybody know if “Taunting Blow” is really in game? I’ve NEVER seen it on any shied.
Would be a game changer imo and change the role of the Ogryn to a real tank …
Would LOVE it!

From my ogryn main experience and from a weapon blessing cheat sheet website I checked; that blessing is so karking rare (or not turned on) that hundreds of ogryn games haven’t revealed it to me.

Honestly, while the shield has some damage and mechanical problems that make it feel bad to use, the BIG issue IMO is the utter lack of usable blessing variety that it can roll:

  • The shield has 5 (if you don’t count the practically non-existant rare Taunting Blow) blessings and 3 of them are arguable useless.
  • 2 blessings situationally let you ignore enemy hit-mass on a weapon that has near infinitely cleaving heavies already. They only help letting you cleave non-bulwark ogryns with carapace armour and let me repeat, situational activation conditions.
  • 1 blessing lets you apply Impact, which makes enemies weaker to stagger, to an enemy you already staggered which is… not good even BEFORE you remember the shield and ogryn in general have 0 problems stunlocking enemies already.

Never saw it, if it wasn’t for check the list of blessings by chance i wouldn’t known of his existence.
Already the fact that some blessings are more rare than others is idiotic hidea, having a blessing that so radically change the weapon being rare is completely out of common sense unless actually the blessing has been disabled by the developer for some reason.

But don’t you want to Rev Up that shop window for a 300th time!?

Talking about the blessings I gotta agree a lot of them are kinda worthless. Need to seriously question anything involving a weak spot kill since trying to land that in a weapon that just scatters enemies around is extremely difficult. Out of the list only 2 involve not adding to stagger and nothing even gives a temp increase to damage or attack speed.

There really needs to be a “target recieves stacks of brittle for hitting your shield for X seconds” or “+damage on next attack after a block/ push”. Even something like “blessed metal, chance to reflect shots back at the shooter or to nearby enemies” but having all the blessings centre around impact on a weapon that already staggers everything is an odd choice.

Same thing with the mauls imo. I don’t get why we are even bothering with +impact when you have an instant stagger button built into the weapon.
