I’m really not sure how you’re supposed to play any melee focused character in this game. It’s just CONSTANT gun fire at you. Enemies can shoot through crowds. About 5-8 gunners in a group, same with shotgunners. Constant sniper spawns. Lots of flamer spawns. At least Ogryn have the shield. No idea how you’re supposed to play any melee focused build besides stealth.
Hi,
I honestly do not see your problem.
I main Ogryn and play every other class offered up to day. I play all of them with meelee and ranged builds (and I prefere the meelee builds on the Vet to be honest - yells “For the EMPEROOOOR” and runs with his Chainsword deep into the fray ). And I do that on Damnation difficulty (with Ogryn regular Auric, with the others … sometimes Auric)
Trick is to play aggressive in my point of view. Use run, slide, cover and guns to suppress to close the gap or use the combat ability to get close. Once your are there it is all about slaughter in His holy name.
Sure, there ARE situations where you will be gunned down (but all the die hards here will tell us to git gud), but these situations are rare and mostly they are caused by the player (definatly including me) abbandoning the team’s assistance.
and tbh: the shield on the Ogryn is in my opinion not the ranged cover some people think it is. It is imo used because of it’s damage distribution as with patch (was it 10 or 11?) they made it never fall beneath 35, so all cleaved targets recieve the bleed stacks (bleed stacks are inflicted by damage not by hit afaik).
On my zealot I’m favoring the charge ults and laspistol with ghost+between the eyes to close the gaps or pick off enough specials and gunners/shooters at range as needed. Fairly aggressive slides and dodges to melee pays off, with our without laspistol.
I can see why it can feel overly spammy though, it probably can use a better mix of range and melee instead of 20 gunners at once.
I mean, enemies definitely can not shoot through other enemies. Only the trappers net goes through others. Every other projectile damages other enemies too, you literally can watch gunners mow down whole waves. You can see snipers kill multiple specialists if they are in the way.
Also, dodge and alide as often as you can. Teamwork helps, the vet or psyker should cover the meelee guys while charging towards the enemy.
welcome to patch 14 darktide which is the same as launch darktide.
Zealot can have fun ONLY when allowed by AI director
melee combat is a myth and only basic vanilla pumpkin spice late FPS combat is allowed.
Meanwhile in patch 13 I could have my melee weapon out 99.8% of the game, in patch 14 I took my laspistol and Iam forced to stay on it 60% of the time MINIMUM
Check out Telopots on youtube. I learned a lot from him you probably can as well.
He spends far more time in melee than ranged in the majority of his matches even as vet.
Comes down to proper movement (slide spam), and flank maneuvers.
Telopots is play true solo or duo, i watch him aswell and they are shooting plenty.
But since I dont have the time to play as much as telopots has, nor do I want to spend it all on darktide. I obviously cant be as good as he is.
But what I can do is say that during patch 13 I spent in FUN melee MUCH MORE time than in patch 14, and this is purely because of spawn mix.
Patch 13 was FUN melee sprinkled with ranged, now its boring COD sprinkled with fun in melee here and there
I mean, it is a problem if you basically don’t have to switch between your weapons. Also, meelee is still viable, never was a problem and still is not. You not being able to engage in meelee sounds like a skill issue.
As a diehard Zealot lover and someone who remembers the initial struggle well (still struggling, often) I think I can help you out with some fundamentals.
Bring a gun that complements your melee weapon (give particular enemies the business) and use it when you have to. I favour quick problem-solvers like the revolver to take out specials. There are guns that can deal with chaff gunner too.
Toughness management. Gunners will not damage your health while you have it, so find out how your class generates it and do that! Positioning and coherency also help.
Yeah… shot/gunner gangs and specials will always be a threat. But I guess they’re not gonna brutally murder themselves
They also regenerate incredible amounts of toughness in melee! Check out the toughness on heavy attack perks in the top left of the tree, that’s the elixir of life right there (so long as you can keep wompin’).
I’m not gonna knock stealth since I’ve seen it do wonders in the right hands. But zealot charge is good even point blank, or to get the final few steps in for a solid hit. No need to be charging every gunner, that’s a good way to get surrounded by them and you need to melee or use charge again to regain your toughness. Feels good when you can freely slaughter them though!
The book also seems strong, though I find it hard to give up the charge mobility.
I haven’t played zealot as much since I’ve discovered a melee veteran build I’ve been enjoying lately…
The secret is in using slide (sprint + crouch) movement.
Shooters will miss while you’re getting closer.
Combine with dodge and you can be pretty untouchable
So you just want to never use your gun huh? Maybe you should just play Vermintide 2. There are a few classes that are literally melee only.
Game has way more content than this one anyways, and the balance is way better.
i’ve been running the agri autogun on my zealot on auric dmn and it’s worked fine so far. just gotta utilize your stun grenades and then go charge in lol
Flamer, throwing knives and stealth works.
Charging with chastise the wicked and stubs works
Personally easiest one is using icon + axe + martyr to turn who groups into corpse piles.
Key point is about utilizing the lockup mechanic.
Youre almost entirely immune from gunfires when youre sliding. Also the game doesnt teach you this but dodge into crouch will enable sliding. Yeah youll be doing some crab walking but just learn this one simple skill and you will do far better.
Play with mouse and keyboard.
Stay in coherency (unless you’re really good and have talents selected for survivability outside of coherence).
Slide to avoid ranged attacks.
Be mindful of how your actions regenerate toughness based on your class, weapons and abilities.
Git gud.
I much prefer Vermintide 2, but friends play this.
are you? i run and slide and get shot in the face.
I preferred payday 2 when VT2 was a thing. I like shooting things so I was quite reticent about engaging with the melee combat in VT2 so I dragged my heels, and played as best I could to make it a shooter.
I didn’t have much fun until I sucked it up and actually learned the melee system, and played the game on its terms. Turns out it was “kinda” fun as I sit slightly under 900 hours despite me mostly playing it solo after my friends who got me into it quit.
My “see the light” moment was the VT2 bounty hunter . The weaving of melee into shooting was eye opening for me, and it clicked that the game is most fun when you do both ranged, and melee.
EDIT: Fixed a word
Yes, youll notice enemies simply stop tracking you when youre sliding. You theoretically can take toughness damage while sliding (melee for example) but since ranged attacks made against the player seems to track the last known position instead youll see enemies like a squad of shotgunner shoot where you were when you began sliding.
Another thing to note is if you get shot during sprint you stop sprinting.
