Proper mix of Jump and Dodge in one button (needs polishing)

I know some people don’t like to have those two actions combined, but I find this combo very convenient. There is a big issue though, due to Fatshark’s choice of how to implement it.

When you have only Dodge assigned to Space, you can hit it multiple times quickly (“spam” the action) - and it will result in dodges happening one after another (what you expect actually). When you have Jump also assigned to Space, when you do the same it will result in your character dodging, then jumping, then dodging, etc. You can only dodge repeatedly like this when you wait until previous dodge animation is fully completed - totally nonsensical behavior.

I’ve tried to play with settings in the Input submenu, but none of settings there resolve the issue. I think it either needs to be just changed, or may be one more setting added under Input submenu which will enable next behavior:

  • If enabled, a combination with direction key and Space key will be ALWAYS a Dodge, except for the case when forward direction key is used (alone, to still allow diagonal dodging) - then it will forward Jump.

100% agree that should be the default behavior of the dodge/jump button.

In the mean time, as a workaround, there is a mod that does exactly that called Stop accidental jumps:

just unbind it it took me a few tries to find something that works for me but jump on v is fine

That’s great, thank you, I’ll tried it right away. Though, I must tell one thing. As a relatively new player (just recently have exceeded 100 hrs, got their in a couple months), I already have 2 mods installed:

  • Multiple key bindings - because who even could thought people may need 2-3 keys bound to the same action, in year 2025, right? Ofc it’s a totally optional feature which modders need to add, instead of game developers..
  • Proper statistics mod that shows you exactly how did you (and your teammates) do in the mission that just eneded, how many mobs of different kinds you dispatched, damage you did, dps, hit/miss percentage etc. Again, totally innovative feature never used in gaming before, which developers need to be made aware of [/sarcasm]

So, now it will be 3rd mod - just to have more or less proper gaming experience. If it doesn’t scream usability issues, I don’t know what.

I don’t want to, I want this game to have proper controls following well-establishing, time-tried patterns, which are convenient to use. Problems need to be solved, not avoided and circumvented. Bad design practices need to be called out

i have no idea what to say to that

I do jump on space, dodge on Left Alt. So I just shift my thumb over a bit in combat

Say noting then, you are not adding much to the original post anyway

That won’t be possible on all keyboards and with all hands. On mine it’s inconvenient as heck. So it’s another suboptimal workaround because the most optimal way of implementing these controls doesn’t work as it should in this game, and people have to mod it to make it work.

The most optimal way is to separate them, because tying two actions to the same key is only useful in niche situations or if there’s not enough keys (such as on a controller). It’s more convenient, but not more optimal

Yeah, I eventually just had to separate them because it felt just awful, and thankfully from soft already figured out this issue which is just the same idea, put them on two separate buttons (A for jump, B for dodge).

For me, I do space for dodge as that’s what one uses 95% of the time, and I use middle mouse button (pushing down on the scroll wheel) for jump, because it felt ‘the most correct’ for me and isn’t as often used.

It would be nice if the ‘double button’ was usable though, having it strictly jump when holding forward would be nice (since you can’t dodge forward anyway). Would still not be great since without it you’ll just do a backstep which is often better for cases like side trappers/dogs and generally just getting into the dodge state quickly after running, but at least then one can decide to ‘tank the learning curve’ instead of just being strictly worse at the game than someone who’s seperated the buttons.

Your premise is flawed here so everything after it is as well, the problem is the default double-bind, which with MnK can be easily rectified without a mod. You’re literally circumventing the problem now with the mod, and in this case that’s the bad practice.
I hate to be another person to rain on your parade but as

said, the proper optimal way is to have them on separate keybinds, 1st thing I did was rebind DODGE to [Shift], it’s the default in many other games going back decades.
Or do the opposite and bind [Space] to jump but long shape may be theoretically

The double jump+dodge bind is clunky as hell and more of a controller concession than anything else.

You’re still new at the game pick a more convenient spammable key for dodge, tag(ping) etc. and profit.
