Learning to play zealot

Is learning to bind dodge to something other than space.

Dodge is on space for me… Vault/jump is separate on alt. Crouch/slide is on mouse 4. Crouching was the one I really needed to remap.

I only got a two button mouse - dodge is on the top button, tag on the bottom. Crouch is on space, alt is jump/vault. I made the crouch to space change more recently after playing 1000 hours with space as jump and crouch on ctrl. Makes it much easier to dodge slide and not feel like I am developing carpel tunnel after a session.

This helps when both are bound to the same button.

Applies to all classes really. I’d say for psykers it’s even more important, since a single extra hit is far more lethal to them.

But yee, I recommend changing the bindings to something like this:

  • Space: sprint & dodge
  • Shift: crouch (slide)
  • Ctrl: jump

That way you’ll never unintentionally jump in place when trying to dodge ever again. Yet you’ll still have full movement no matter what you’re doing, with no conflicts between different actions. LCtrl for jump is weird yes but it’s not like you need to do it often, and the rest are very typical & easy to remember controls from various other games (Dark Souls, Mass Effect and many others had space for sprint / dodge after all).

I try to bind everything onto mouse as much as possible

  • Side mouse buttons for crouch and special weapon activation. Means I can slide and activation with right hand thumb to press 2 buttons at same time.
  • Mouse wheel down for tag
  • Mouse wheel up for reload
  • Another mouse button for ability use
  • Dodge is on alt and jump is spacebar

When you have sniper and flamer enemy at mid-range I often see people do side dodge and sprint forward but more effective is to sprint with W then A or D held down, it makes you run in a semi circle fashion towards them they can’t rotate fast enough to track you, so they shoot and miss every time. Side dodge they still re-acquire as target very quickly and moving towards them in straight line means they are already pointing directly towards you.

One thing will become perfectly clear once you start playing Zealot with Dueling Sword or Knife - the average veteran players are not killing enough specialss/elites, even if you keep the trash off their backs.

I rebound my dodge to SHIFT. It’s easily accessible, and it doesn’t interfere with sprint (you can’t dodge forward anyway), or anything else.

My crouch key is C, another easily accessible key for crouch sliding, specifically. I rarely ever, if at all, crouch for the purposes of crouching.

I have my dodge and jump set on the same key. Knowing my dodge limit is now muscle memory/second nature. Though my first (warm up) games are always ass because of it.
