As the title states, for the love of the Emperor please remember to use your grenades, if you’re a Veteran (especially if you’re using the free grenade perk) or Zealot its a free rez on downed teammates, dropping it just before you get pounced on by the terrible hitboxes of hounds gets them off you, they drastically help deal with hordes during the Assassination missions so you can focus the boss, they even allow you to soften up hordes of gunmen without needing to have line of sight.
REMEMBER TO USE YOUR GRENADES, if you died with a full or near full stack of grenades as the two aforementioned classes I can guarantee you if you had used more of them you’d probably still be standing in 70% of the scenarios you can think up.
Speaking of grenades, when is a good time for an ogryn to use their grenades? I don’t ever find myself using them because they are a) too rare to waste on specialists/elites b) too weak against ogryns/monstrosities in T3 and above.
If you have the perk that makes them explode on hitting armor they’re good during hordes so long as you hit any enemy that has even a bit of armor, you don’t have to hit the armored part directly and even flak armor counts. If you’re not using that perk they do decent damage on hitting any boss’s weak point, which can sometimes be pretty hard to do given travel time and how they can move, they’re also generally pretty good for doing a big chunk of damage and also stunning Crushers, Reapers and Bullwarks (provided you hit the back of a Bullwark) on their own; especially for Reapers I find the stun part to be the most important takeaway, people usually immediately realize when they’ve stopped being fired upon by a Reaper and at that point will immediately focus it. When I’m running my Ogryn without the perk I largely use them for those enemies as well as mutants if no one is prioritizing it when its running towards the group or any special in general that you otherwise can’t kill fast enough before it does its thing.
They’re pretty much your “This mutant needs to die now” button. Outside of that they’re generally extremely situational. Not helped by how slow they are to pull out and throw along with the awkward delay because of the crummy servers.
It makes me very, very sad when I see people waste them on crushers and reapers and whatnot in situations where there’s no pressure, as ogryn have by far the least efficient grenades so needing to consume a grenade pickup* when you have a zealot or veteran who could make much more consistent use of them is marginally upsetting.
*Exception for when you have a veteran with the chance at grenade regen.
I use them on snipers, hounds if they’ve pinned someone far away and I need pin point accuracy, and mutants if they’ll be charging from a distance too short for anything else to kill them before they get to me. I’ll be a bit more liberal about using them if the team isn’t using a lot of grenades and I can reliable get the next pickup. They also do major bursts of damage to boss and daemonhost weak spots.
It’s the long range, high damage, high stagger precision attack of the Ogryn, so it’s always there to spot you even if you take a ranged weapon that can’t snipe specials. It falls back a bit in terms of usefulness if you take a special eraser weapon.
Also I’m not sure what you mean it’s weak in T3, because last I played it was 25% health per shot on a monster, so two ogryns could instakill any boss (including demonhost). Quite frankly I don’t even think it’s weak on higher diffs, but it might not be worth the weapon swap slowdown.
