Best Ogryn Grenades

Hey fellas new player here, just wrapped up all the penances for ogryn and was wondering what grenade I should be using on Damnation and above. Rock is great just for the fact that it recharges but I find it’s only good for special killing. The frag is nice but the damage output isn’t stellar. The box of grenades is my new favourite because I’ve been using it to keep areas clear, I’ll throw it on a downed teammate or an objective just to stagger all the enemies. Just wanted to see what the long term players think, whats your favourite of them?

Box is definitely my favorite lately. You can easily beat a Daemonhost to death with the Branx while risking no damage, it just loops staggers until it dies. They’re also pretty good for using like flash bangs, continually staggering enemies for safe rescues and the like. And with how good Mk6 Ripper is at special killing now (aim for the head) you don’t even notice the lack of rock.

Frag I would like better if I wasn’t the bad luck Larry who somehow manages to throw the nuke that lands behind an oblong rock and fails to damage anything at all. I had way too many of those instances so the frag went in the bin.

i usually prefer box since it can effectively just shutdown a room with little effort, makes it easier to give an opening to get hits in into armored or oppress a ranged patrol into an easy dive. It makes smite look ethical since you can just invalidate a a lot of situations, so I’ve seen a few people not take them out of respect of making the game actually challenging.

frags are fine, but it’s less economical not to mention I’ve had weird moments of an armored patrol surviving due to havoc modifiers. it doesn’t feel great when you toss a bomb into a 30-wide armored patrol, them surviving and then getting healed back to full thanks to purple.

imo i think rocks aren’t worth using if you’re in organized play with a reliable back-line special eliminatior. having a vet actually pay attention and make space against harrassing bombers while you’re dealing with a boss makes the game whirlwinds easier. it’s just that a lot of pub vets just refuse to shoot anything except the things that their team is too occupied to deal with- so having a backup range killer at handy is fine but not ideal.

Well, rocks are best just because it never gets old to whack a charging mutant with a big rock to the face.

But besides that, I dunno. Can definitely see the advantages of box, but it’s limited and grenade pickups aren’t usually that common, so you’d have to be spare with them.

Rock is the best because it’s funny

Its mostly personal preference. I prefer frag grenades for getting us out of tough situations.

For me its between Rock and Big Boom. Charge Ability makes up for lack of box of grenades.

Why Rock?

  • Snipers
  • Mutants
  • Gunners
  • Stuns bosses (Ogryn/Chaos) (I could be wrong)

The Rock will refresh and with its new talent you don’t have to take the extra seconds to make sure you don’t miss. (I would prefer a unique pickup for Ogryn to replensh rocks , instead of CD)

Why Big Boom?

  • Panic Button, when players start to drop like flies, my BB give me small respite to get sh%& done before its too late. Sah!
  • Rager/Gunner spam delete button
  • There are a surprising amount of Grenades being un-used. And lobbies are getting better and better in recognizing who needs what, they will ping Grenade for Ogryn and ensure I have their back.

Overall, With half the classes not needing to pickup grenades (Pskyer/Vet) and 1/3 of the Ogryns not needing a Grenade, there is a high chance grenades go by the way side. For that I Recommend Ogryns running with Grenades. Its annoying to pepper Snipers with a Ripper and LoS them until we can close the distance but the ability to mop a room and pick everyone up is worth IMO. There is a strong case Big Box does the job better(than Boom), plus more capacity but I prefer one explosion rather than crashing my console friends if I somehow need to throw 2 at once, typically on their body since they are down

Fully agree on this, only time box might be better is when trying to pickup the puny humans when they’re down

I’ve been noticing this too, when my first big boom saves the team from a bad situation, my teammates go out of their way to get me a new grenade to throw

it’s funny for sure. a mutant cartwheeling after getting a rock to the head still cracks me up.
one can also use it for sniping.
it’s also good for a quick throw like zealot’s blades of faith when you have a stubber that takes time to change mags but there’s a trapper that needs to die now.
however, when i play my usual heavy hitter ogryn, i see more use from frag grenades. want to revive someone? lay it down at your feet.
box works also well in that regard, but the graphics effect is terrible and should be changed.

All of them have different and useful uses. I like the nuke because it’s the most satisfying and allows a couple seconds of respite in a tight spot.

Rock is fun, but you cannot beat the frag bomb and the box really. Frag for that clear potential, but box can save you in really bad situations too, and gives you more time to revive or reposition. Both stagger monsters and bosses (I want to say as long as they dont have their shield up?).

They’re all good unless you toss the frag bomb near stairs, slightly different elevations, or a tool box.

I have to have that extra talent with rock because I use it for more than just mutants. It staggers bosses and frees teammates eaten by the beast of nurgle, opens Bulwarks, staggers Reapers (Crushers and Maulers, too, but who cares), and is just convenient and fun.

Box is a better area denial tool, i skip the extra talent unless I’m doing a malignant fire explosion build to bully @psyk’s PC

Rock - If mutants, snipers & gunners annoy you that’s what you want. The downfall is that you cannot deal with tough situations of hordes overwhelming you unless somebody else has crowd control then you’re golden. It’s cool they regenerate though.

Box - Stirring up chaos if there’s hordes of elites it also buys you some time & it also procs Skullcrusher to kill things a bit faster within the horde because of the stagger it produces. It’s also great for picking up teammates when they’re down. Not too many downfalls, honestly… unless you don’t see any nade pickups for a bit. This is one of my personal favorites only because it’s gotten me out of those hard situations & in my humble opinion the strongest choice out of the three. Like somebody else mentioned, you can stagger bosses & DH killing them in one-go without much consequence.

Nuke - This one is a hit or miss for me personally. It’s really good if there’s a dense horde you can kill tons of elites in one go, but you can only carry one unless it’s one of the game modified matches. Otherwise, it’s mid for me. Admittedly, it has its fans for sure. A cool thing is that it’s really good in Havoc-40 when you need to wipe-out a cult in a rush.

It all depends on what you’re going for with your load-out.

You can’t go wrong with box in general.

Big Nade is nice and actually a very good pick on certain endgame scenarios (namely henious rituals, it can wipe out all cultists), but you can only carry one, so use it only when it’s really necessary.

Rock one taps mutants and most specials with a headshot and is semi inifinte. It’s best when your build can take care of stagger/AoE damage by other means(ie. By bringing the Rumbler)

They’re all good.

I end up using Rock the most (it can also open up Bulwarks or stagger Chaos Spawns), followed by Frag Bomb (though it can be a little lackluster sometimes without the Big Boom talent). Box is perfectly fine for dealing prolonged CC and perhaps one-shotting a key-target at the same time.

There’s no best, they all situational

  1. Rock good for mutants and specials in general, good to have it thrown into head of the boss to stagger, tho box do same with bigger damage, rock helps with ammo conservation, especially if you running with rumbler, it also faster now to whip out than ammo. Also rock kinda bad a bit without it additional talent.
  2. Bomb is panic button, you throw it to clear space and then kill whatever didn’t die, but got severe damage, altrough it’s got one biggest problem, there’s only one, so i guess, if we were to rate them, it’s worse one. Also helps with rituals in havoc.
  3. Box do a high of damage on hit, stagger bosses, but it’s blast damage is neraly zero without talent that give burn to enemies, so it only stagger for a short time, good for horde cotrol, but if you really get yourself in corner or sorrounded by horde, you can send in all 3 boxes, but you will likely die still.
I mostly use bomb and box, rock demand one additional talent, but i do have build where i use it.

Box, stagger bosses and cover downed, disabled or cornered teammates and revives.

For Extra Blitz Mael I take big frag but I wish it did a bit more base damage vs chonky armor (and some dmg values are a bit mixed up)

speaking of div-x-g, i like playing those games as ogryn because of the 3 grenades. find a grenade box and you have 3 more grenades. dumb but really fun.
