I’m trying to understand the purpose of the rock. It doesn’t have the hoard clear of the nuke, or lock down a space for revive like the box. It has single target damage at range but…I have a grenade launcher for that.
Rock..is Rock. Rock is life. Rock do Rock things, make Ogryn happy.
Rock has high damage, incredible accuracy, extremely long range, and is available in greater volume than other grenade options, doesn’t use your ranged ammo, and has an extra node to really help throw them out with greater confidence. It’s amazing for dealing with Trappers, Muties, Snipers, Flamers, and the like, at literally any range.
If you really like the grenade launcher and run it routinely, you may not see a whole lot of need for Rock. But Rock is glorious in and of itself, and pairs wonderfully with other weapons like the Ripper Gun or Stubbers.
theyre all good. you really shouldnt use blitz on ogryn for clear unless you have nuke and theres a lot of elites/armor.
the rock can delete most disablers and has a very fast travel time, it also replenishes so you wont need grenade packs you use it to pick off disablers or stagger the odd crusher/boss if you land a headshot.
box is great for mass aoe stagger and damage great in havoc and the throw itself does damage
nuke is for big damage but it kinda falls off in havoc i wouldnt use it above havoc 20
also rock and nuke dont debuff my fps please use those box bad
One shot mutants, other specials if you hit head, which also saves ammo and grenade packs, like zealot’s throwing knives, only way worse. You can also stagger monster bosses except burgle if you hit head. Also it is very satisfying to use it. Overall all ogryn blitzes are kinda mid so you can use whatever.
You gotta run an extra talent to get rocks back for headshots or misses. I usually do for memes but in general ogryn power 1 node to meme is expensive.
The rock advantage is in that it draws much faster and doesn’t burst on hit, in addition to the obvious functioning outside the resource economy of grenades. When the rock hits something it doesn’t go away, it can hit another target like a half second later for full damage. With this knowledge and perfect timing and spacing you can set up very funny double kills.
Box does more Unyielding damage, but without a weakspot hit it’s not a wide margin and with the sluggish delays on box it’s hard to pull off. It also does no on hit stagger even if you do hit a weakspot - only the inner radius of the grenade explosions can stagger monstrosities. Rock I routinely dash into a spawn and then feed it a couple rocks to stagger lock it…the team usually kills it before it recovers or I run out.
I hate posts like this because it leads people to think that the rock is cool, …. when in all actuality is just downright sucks and pales in comparison to other setups/builds like ogrynheimer or mining man builds. The rock does what every ranged weapon the ogryn has available does, whereas the nuke clears an area completely or does huge boss damage on weakspot hit or box is great at creating chaos and damage thats consistant and adds up WHILE you’re dpsing.
using the rock is a far cry from a min maxer wet dream, and it seems that the rock is pure a RP fantasy build that one would do just out of boredom or because they like the idea of RPing a dumb ogryn who cant count to 4 and throws rock cuz ogryn big dumb.
Edit: Furthermore, one might see zealots “min/max purgator and dueling sword” build and think “oh this would work well on ogryn too!” the difference though, is that the zealot gets a ton of wave clear and burn damage from the purgator. Horde clear is not the best forte of the zealot if he chooses the dueling sword (arguably his best melee weapon) so with the throwing knives he gains horde clear from purgator, single target damage from dueling sword, and ranged special/disabler/elite gunner kills from throwing knives on headshots. Ogryn doesnt need this because his ranged options offer both horde clear AND ranged special/disabler/elite gunner kills AND a ton of boss damage so having the box or nuke just compliments the situation more than helps him do what hes already good at doing.
Sah! Found a here- uh, chaos-whatsit. Permission to give a good thumpin’?
In all seriousness, the rock really does pale in comparison to the crowd control of the box or the panic button of the nuke, and I never use it. Its main benefits are that you ease the grenade economy for your team because you don’t need the pickups and disabler sniping, which is useful if you’ve got a limited ammo weapon like the Rumbler.
its purely fantasy builds/rp builds because the rock doesnt do the job of the rumbler/any of the ogryn guns better, and pushing the “grenade economy” isnt a good push, simply because most people know to give nades to the big man. Hence why every min/max build outside of ogryn is using a regenerating grenade of some sort.
Rock removes mutants and specials quicker than some of the Ogryn’s ranged weapons which might require multiple shots or waiting for stuff like Surgical stacks in case of Heavy Stubbers, it’s can even oneshot enemies across the room where stuff like Kickback loses its punch.
For example, if you’re using knife or karsolas pickaxe, in Havoc you can’t oneshot mutants and ragers without full buffs (fully charged Thrust hit etc), but with rock you can do it if you land headshots.
It’s the best blitz for kiting enemies, since the other two grenades you don’t always use optimally or you just won’t have them at the right time. There’s a good chance you will sometimes waste nuke/box on situations where you didn’t really need them, unless you only use them when somebody is down and you’re surrounded by dozens of enemies. But in that case, you can sometimes go whole games without using your blitz, if your team is good enough.
In Maelstorms with mutant squads a single rock can kill 2+ mutants at a time when they’re running right behind each other.
I think rock is the best if you plan to use your blitz all the time without fearing to “waste” it.
Ogryn is the only class where I use all three blitzes constantly.
Nuke is best for clearing daemonhost rituals in havoc, it can instantly clear one even on Havoc 40, though sometimes it doesn’t kill every enemy even if you throw it right in the middle of the ritual which I don’t really understand why. But I’ve seen other Ogryns do it consistently across the room with just one grenade, I guess there’s some kind of trick to it.
Damage-wise nuke is superior, Rock is mostly for utility, but if you want reasons:
Resource conservation. Nades are already rare enough in T5 and doubly so in Havoc. Having one less player sucking up nades so the team can funnel it at the Ogyrn with nuke is invaluable.
Mutie killer. Having someone who can one shot muties is nice QoL. It makes it so that it takes longer for them to build up to critical mass.
Rock is garunteed to one-shot dreg/scab gunners (with any hit location) at all difficulties.
Can stagger bosses with headshots.
Can cover for long range if you didn’t bring a sniper weapon.
It’s a fun meme.
You’re too lazy to judge or the pressure is too high for judging when to nuke so you just bring rock.
I’m not seeing where it’s a totally useless RP only tool. If that’s what you got out of my post I feel like you just stopped after the first sentence.
I mean, you can not like Rock, that’s fine, but I spent most of my post detailing exactly what I found its usefulness to be and with what weapons. It’s a great pairing for relatively short ranged or sluggish/unreactive ranged weapons, has a much higher “uptime” than the other grenade options and reduces the team need for pickups, and works magnificently in dealing with disablers and specialists at literally any range with effectively perfect accuracy (as long as you can judge your throw right).
To expand a bit, while the grenade box offers similar utility in some respects, most of what I find myself using the Blitz for is single-target purposes, and Rock has more starting uses, regenerates on its own, and doesn’t need pickups, and has an upgrade node to be even more forgiving with use. Meanwhile the Nuke is great but you’re always hoarding it for that one use then hunting desperately for another pickup.
