Can anyone tell me why I should use the rock over the nuke or the box?

I love the rock it’s my favorite blitz in the game but looking at it objectively the frag bomb and the box is better. That doesn’t stop me from using the rock though I abhor metaslavery and use what I find fun.

Don’t forget that frag bomb also has similar comedy value to the rock. It’s like a magic trick.

like the trick where it lands 1.3 pixels under a rock and its a big light show with no damage instead.

I only use frag in Mortis Trials then pray for 100% dmg and AOE increase paired with regen every 20 seconds and/or killing an enemy.

It’s just hilarious.

I don’t use it in regular missions anymore, because the box serves the same function. It doesn’t kill outright but gives enough time and stagger to let you kill whatever’s around.

The rock is great fun. Never gets boring throwing one at a mutie. I use it sometimes when I have rumbler. Basically it swaps the roles of blitz and ranged for me, because normally I only use ranged for specials.

Nothing has made me laugh more in Mortis than back to back to back insta-kill friendly rocks into monstrosities.
Methinks you need to try it.

I use rock for the same reason this is funny

Enjoyment based on meta is temporary. Watching bodies turn into spaghetti is timeless.

Because you can’t stop the rock, ca-cant stop the rock.

I like taking it on Malestroms with the “More Mutants” and Havoc. It can delete Muties instantly and get them off your squishier teammates quickly before they sustain any damage. I think the most Muties I’ve killed with rocks in a single mission was 42, lol. Since it auto-replenishes, I don’t have to worry about competing for grenades. And if I want to save precious ammo, I can use it to take care of a things like Trappers and other things it can one-shot.

For Rock and Stone.

Shield + Rock + Rumbler is still my go to build for high level Havoc, the build has barely changed after the Ogryn rework. One-shots mutants, bombers and snipers to any part of the body, flamers, gunners, ragers and trappers to the chest and/or head, staggers bosses with a headshot and knocks down Ogryns, including Crushers out of the animation… And yes I find grenade economy valuable because I would like Zealots/Arbitrators/Veterans to spam them instead of me.

Call me crazy but I never liked the Frag bomb because even on Havoc the moments to use it properly were very rare, compared to what a buffed crate + augment perk can do. Also I hate it because the penance for killing 20+ mobs was stuck for me at 18/20 for almost a year until it got magically fixed some day.

Main use of Rock I’ve found is mainly in ranged builds funnily enough. Most Ogryn weapons have an issue dealing with things at heavily extended ranges, so the rock gives you the ability to at least generally hit things at medium long range, with the ability to attempt to hit things at long range, while using stuff like the twin-stubbers and rumblers as my main examples.

It’s also as stated good for ammo conservation (so your not say wasting a full rumbler shot on a single trapper/dog that ran behind you), and actually procs/keeps active Burst Limiter Override, so if you’re good at landing your headshots you can permanently keep a ranged damage boost up, or at the very least keep it’s duration extended during a fight with your blitz without having to use a non-regeneratable resource.

Though, with the way the games gone, you more often than not should be picking the other two just because ‘literally all grenades are saved for the Ogryn’, as every other class just regenerates theirs now and there’s little reason for them not to outside of flame grenade on Zealots sometimes. So having a nuke in your back pocket or a stagger lock grenade like the box is super helpful. But for builds that already have ranged wave clear like said Twin Stubber or Rumbler builds and don’t need that, but DO need something that lets them not waste shots so you’re less of a tax on your team, it’s really nice.

Basically every melee build I have uses the box though, it’s just the most versatile with one point spent, and you get 3 now. So if you’re melee, just stick with that, the rock is mainly for if you’re being ‘interesting’ and not just gluing the single stubber to your hip with a melee set up.

Rock is ogryns best blitz and always has been

As a fella who plays a ton of Havoc 40s and my second most played character is Ogryn here is some insight for each blitz.

Rock - Is a pretty good blitz when it comes to conserving ammo, freeing up the grenade economy, and covering the weaknesses of ogryns’ shorter range weapons, such as his ripper guns, the kick back, twin-linked stubbers, and rumbler. The rock will always one-shot muties on any diff, which is great as muties are probably one of the dangerous enablers for other specials, and the rock can snipe snipers, trappers, flamers, or lone gunners peppering you across the map.
The rock also returns to you every 45 seconds, so you will always have one ready to save teammates from disablers. The rock will also stagger on weak spot hits, so if someone is devoured by a BoN, throw a rock at his glowing back, if a plague ogryn is close to a ledge and no one has a CD ready, throw a rock at his head, same with the Chaos spawn. Since rock is only good for single target eliminations, you should pair it with weapons that have great horde clear such as pickaxe and bully club. Don’t use rock if you’re rocking the heavy stubber. Overall, I like rock as it’s the most consistent blitz at what it does.

Frag bomb - Frag bomb is decent, to say the least. I’ll probably get a lot of flak here, but frag bomb is probably the worst blitz for him, it’s not because of the damage, because when frag bomb works, it works great. The problem is frag bomb is very inconsistent on what it kills, same as vet’s krak grenade. It will wipe out waves of crushers or maulers, it will sometimes just kill two maulers that were behind the pack, it can wipe out the cultist at rituals, sometimes it only kills two. I’ve seen frag bomb not kill a single pox-walker in a horde due to a slight angle. I think this is mostly due to map geometry screwing with the checks if frag bomb hits and enemy, so if you want to best use frag bomb, try aiming for flat ground. you also only have one frag bomb, so make it count. I’ve been in games where grenades don’t spawn till near the end of an event. If you’re running rumbler on ogryn, frag bomb is kind of overkill as two-three rumber rounds will do what frag bomb does and it will be regen quickly if you have a survivalist vet. Frag bomb is best if you need some emergency add clear. I generally don’t run it if an ogryn already has the blitz.

Grenade box - Ogryns’ best blitz as it has high direct damage and it CCs the whole room and clears it, so it’s great at getting revives and stunning monstrosities. Generally, you should be running this blitz as it gives your team the breathing room needed for revives and allows you to do objectives. The best part is, you get three uses instead of one use from frag bomb. There’s not a lot to say as the grenade box is really good at what it does, and it’s consistent. The only downside is that this thing eats your frames. As stated before, I generally will not run it if there is another ogryn using nades.

So, all in all, pick what is best with your loadout and you’ll be set.

^ This was always my reasoning and pick, even with pre-newgryn 3 uses; though I’d argue the raw damage is a bit on the lower side (maybe spoiled by vet frags).

I DO run big frag on extra blitz on 2 mans to spam it for fun.

nuke save run..

..rock keep from save

Don’t know, I used to absolutely hate the old box… The only reason to use it was for solo revives, other than that it could be just replaced with taunt and bull rush. New box is great tho.

They didn’t really do anything besides increase the number of blitz charges you hold though.

They added augment for extra bomblets and AFAIK they can also apply burn stack each from the gunlugger tree

Well, the advantage of the box was you could send it to do its CC job remotely, including throwing one at a teammate who’s way out there and got themselves in trouble, often preventing a down in the first place and a spot you wouldn’t want to be in yourself or too far for bull rush.
