Using loyal protector taunt breaks you our of charging heavy attacks.
The damage is not even close to the level needed to justify lack of horde clear.
You need most of the heavy attack talents and blessings to be able to oneshot crushers (only on the heaviest pick) Mk V shovel can do it even without Crunch.
Heavy attacks with picks don’t seem to consistenly give toughness from “The best defence” and “Smash 'em!”
Overall the picks feel horrible and there are no redeeming qualities. You could double the base damage values on them all and i would still probably prefer any of the shovels
The Branx heavy strikedown attack does more damage than the folding shovel special heavy. Its heavy sweep can hit for more than 2000 damage. The damage values are more than adequate.
Crusher dmg is basically the same, shovel is better against dreg ragers, shovel can kill horde, shovel has normal heavy attacks that can be used to replenish toughness.
It is a bit of an unfair comparison since the shovel is the meta weapon right now, but i’d like for the pickaxes to at least be able to one-tap most things with a heavy attack without all buffs/blessings active at the time of striking.
I’ve been using the Karsolas and been absolutely loving it, and using it successfully. Used Borovorian a bit and I like it but not as much, maybe just need to get used to it’s move set more (not saying it’s worse).
When I tested out the Branx’s moveset in the Psykanium with a grey I assumed it was bugged and decided to not to use it. I’m able to consistently get the heavy light sweep combo, but the weird end time feels very awkward.
If that really is intentional than I can certainly give it a try. Is the intention for it to be bad or mediocre and a bit unsafe at horde clear to make up for it’s incredibly high single target damage?
FS wants me to play Ogryn because despite getting nothing great on the shock mauls across three characters the first couple of Picks I rolled up for Oggy had t4 headtaker and thrust on them.
only thing today, but that might be due to servers being arse, is attacks “stuck/frozen” in initiation animation (drawing the pick behind the head) and not firing off.
some 3-6inputs later the stuck move graces me with an action and its back to normal again.
in the thick of it it can lead to some hairy situations though without personal fault.
for a second i thought poor oggy was cramping in the upper arms. might add some magnesium to the rashuns, sah.
I thought it was like Kruber’s halberd. That weapon has 45 strikes with reach a lot shorter than the reach of its stabs, ostensibly to keep it from being a super armor clearing version of a sword.
Want to say after going through this thread, I played a couple of games with the “Bronx,” as I like to call it, and I think it’s my favorite pick now. The light follow up on horde clear is clunky, and imo I wish the special chained into over head heavy (still not bad doing special-light-heavy), but it’s such a fun weapon to use and I think has the highest skill ceiling of the 3. Will be using it a lot more in the future.
Following this logic, a bigger input window for light attack follow-up after sweeping heavy is needed. Same issue with the newer eviscerators when they came out, hope it gets fixed soon.
Visually it appears you’re ready for a follow up swing, but actually it seems you’re not. I’m also just spamming left click for safety, which is less than ideal…
Ogryn is basically forced to use heavy attack the entire time otherwise face losing out on half the skills from the talent tree.
Due to this I just use heavy on the Karsolas with thrust and slow and steady. It’s a great combo and really helps Toughness remain high if you can dodge whilst charging heavies.
A question to anyone who’s been testing them all - does anyone know if the strike down does more damage than the heavy strike? Or is it same damage but focused on 1 target? I don’t have game open now and only just thought it might actually be different.
I get what you’re saying but it’s not like you can’t light attack as Ogryn at all, a brick is still a brick.
Plus Heavy Hitter’s 10% AS will make any weapon attacks feel a touch more responsive.
Strikedown does more damage especially against weak spots. It’s possible to hit multiple targets if they’re close together, not sure about hit mass calculations but there’s definitely enough crunch to go around!
I didn’t enjoy other types as much, and my least liked is the Borovorian, it’s pretty much the same as Karsolas to me, maybe later I will give it one more shot.
And Branx, it’s alright honestly, on par with Karsolas, the only reason why I picked the lighter version as my Favorite is that it enables my hyper aggressive playstyle.
Branx is just too slow, and its heavies aren’t the most comfortable to use on the offensive.
It’s good with more passive playstyle, where you do not rush 20 spread out gunners and pick out hard to kill targets like Crushers or Maulers
Maybe not comfortable, but I’m very aggressive with the Branx especially because of how easy it is to get the incredibly strong overhead heavy. Starting off with the overhead heavy, and getting back to it by only doing 1 light attack means with good positioning, especially after a Bull Rush you can mulch groups of high health enemies with it.
I wouldn’t write it off as passive. But the Karsolas definitely has a better time of rushing groups of gunners and shooters than it does, and the push attack into the overhead attack on it is great as well.
On Karso specifically? All the Strikedowns do more single target damage than the sweeps across all 3 pickaxes. But yeah there wouldn’t be a way to tell in game because I don’t believe it shows up anywhere on the inspect screen.
The sweep is still better for groups of cleavable enemies, like Gunners and depending on your build ragers, but in general for single target damage you want to be doing the overhead.
I can get pictures with proof tomorrow if you want.
Ye, Branx is really good at CRUSHING those Beefy heretics and Overhead’s damage is NASTY.
Karsolas’s push attack is really cool, but I like to reach its overhead by the special attack, this way I skip one low damage attack, which functions pretty much the same as the push.
(I do that to counter Crushers and Mutants)
Overall, I think all Pickaxes are cool, and they serve their purpose.
Only thing that is not cool about them - is their range, and thank god it’s a bug🙏
