Opinion: there should be difficult penances and lowering requirements should be done cautiously because it demeans the hard work of players who got them

I’ll throw my hat in with those that aren’t sure why it matters, Achievements and Pennances don’t really mean anything. Their purpose is to be baubles to be pursued when all the major content has already been experienced. Nobody is perusing a shelf full of e-trophies and standing impressed by another’s ability to play a videogame for long periods of time. If they change them, nothing about existing pennances earned has changed.

None of the pennances were originally terribly well thought through or implemented with great thoughtfulness. Seeing them change with a major pennance update shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

What if i told you video game achievements are both meaningless and pathetic. Literally none of them mean anything. If you want to impress people with your hobby, learn to play guitar, learn to paint, or basically do anything productive.

Thanks! I don’t have a whole lot of practice with it so I’m kinda learning as I go.

For what it’s worth, nobody was actually ever looking at the 250 mission frames and thinking anything but “wow, this guy really spammed uprising missions huh”. Atleast now you can put on the portrait frame without that shame.

@AlphaOmegaMan

I feel dumb for asking, but what’s the skill name you’re referring to? I’d assumed it was “Suprise Attack”, but I must’ve been wrong since I can’t find any mention of stagger.

For those, maybe. It sounds a bit like projection though

I am pretty sure that nobody thought that, when seeing someone with the 1500 mission frame, or the 1 million kills frame though.
I guess if someone was mad enough to farm 1500 missions or 1 million kills in uprising difficulty, they will probably not start playing a higher difficulty after that point either, and those who know what those frames mean, would never get to see those players anyway.

Yeah that’s my bad, no upgrade to the base skill needed. The relevant part is in the description of Infiltrate; “Leaving stealth suppresses nearby enemies.” So no upgrades needed but I would highly recommend adding at least “Surprise Attack” and “Low Profile” to boost your survivability in crowded scenarios.

Will do, thanks!

I’m in the “should have left them as they were” camp on the penances related to cosmetics.
What’s the point of having cosmetics that show long term progression if you just compress that progression arc?!

If the issue is that they take too long, or that there’s no “middle ground” between a fairly simple tick off and a huge effort investment, then simply stick in another tier with a slightly lesser number of skulls in the frame, or less acid green, whatever.

Changing the requirements post-hoc just devalues the efforts some have gone to. When I saw the million kills frame I thought “oooh, someone who has played more than me”. Now I got it by default and I think I’m only about 600k kills or something like that.

Cynically, I also can’t help but think that those mission grind penances have been changed because they’ve actually only got one map for certain mission types. I know I resented doing Hab Dreyko 100 times (+ mission failures), absolutely no way I’d go for 250.

My personal opinion? Ok.

For me just 250h is long but reasonable and the reward small, so I have no problem with that. For the sake of other more casual ppl, I’d like some lesser versions of the same portrait. And Darktide usually does this, which is good.

But for example OP’s specific issue of 250x a specific mission for a portrait? I completely agree with Fatshark’s decision here. I mean, without a mission selector we have like 2-3 missions per difficulty outside Aurics. If you do go for the same mission every time it’s gonna be ultra boring and leave you with no agency over mods. With the playerbase as small as it is, some regions also can’t pick and choose but have to use quickplay to even find players.

So realistically 250x a specific mission is really more like 2k missions in total, each taking 30-35min, so that’s ~1100h average assuming you actually pass every single mission (which is obviously not gonna happen). Given the lack of agency and the extreme grind required, the whole thing is just garbage imo. And even considering making people actually grind lower, boring difficulties to get it is 100% not an option at all, not ever. Stuff like that should be reworked. Again, I have all those 250x mission penances done myself too and I don’t feel the least bit offended if they lowered the requirement on those.

My main point here is that I don’t have anything against rare rewards for those who put in the hours for a massive grind. But as a rule, the challenges themselves should be reasonable, not exclusionary, and come in enough tiers to give everyone a little something in a way that matches the needs of the casuals too and not just the hardcore (even if I’m definitely hardcore myself).

So instead of removing the 1 million kills penance, they could have simply added more tiers in between, with more portrait frames.
That is what i suggested they should have done.

The way it was handled now, those few penances that had a more hardcore final tier, no longer do.
They took the last penance tier away from the hardcore players and handed it to the casuals, who already had all of the lower tiers of these penances as well as all tiers of almost all other penances.
So they went from catering 98.5% to casuals and 1.5% to hardcore players, to 99.5% and 0.5%.
Casuals gained effectively nothing, while the more hardcore players got almost everything taken away from them.
This is especially stupid, when considering that those penances were never needed for anything (they still are not needed for anything) and that they were basically nothing but trackers of your stats in the first place.
It was completely pointless to nerf the requirements by 50% and more.
All that achieved, was to give a now devalued cosmetics to casuals, and to make the stats tracking function a lot worse.

If anything, penances like those should have additional top tiers added over time. Not have their top tiers removed.

people dont want a challenge, the just want to accomplish something in life

Games should be fun. Not a full time job.

people make it a full-time job when they cant take sitting for only an hour or two to play games.
Blame it on people’s lack of self control.

Nah, blame it on poor game mechanics cynically employed to keep you playing.

No secret that game companies employ psychological warfare on you. It’s why the gaming industry has become toxic and nasty, to fatten the personal wealth of billionaire investors who care not for the game on iota.

weak

Makes it no less true.

its not causation just cuz its true
its weird that people know but dont care
who is to blame tho?

i think you can blame the companies all you want but if people werent so stupid then theyd prolly try changing tack

Stockholm Syndrome do be real

Actually you can.

Never had this problem before they did start using these tactic’s in games.

Exactly the same with gambling addiction, it feeds on inherent flaws of who we are as humans.

It’s cynical and nasty, especially when it’s targeting kids and the bank balanced of mum and dad, as in other games.

So? Who gives a shiznit if it feeds on people’s inherent flaws, that shits in everyone, it’s inherent human flaws.
You said it yourself, you

Why only for games?

Why dont you have the same problem with drinking, or smoking, or spending?
Or others for that matter
And if you do have the same problems, then why again, same answer
