Ye, it’s hard AF
And they will, most probably, never do it
Also, just saying, but this topic is not saying that it will be easy to make an Archetype or how to make it(Unless you count mounting idea, it’s just a fun fantasy), just that it’s cool to have the Ratling in the game, which is true
It is sad to realize that this game will never have another Archetype…
Just isn’t worth it…
Even if it’s an idea to sit in the DT2 idea pool then still good to get them out on paper here anyway. The whole point of the forums really. Blue sky, bugs and moaning
Save you own breath, pal.
Problem with ratling is that while they can do all other thngs like shooting shredder and stabbing with kinfe, they’ll lack their most natural way – hiding and sniping. This is unusable in DT. Even Vet tree for marksmanship feels lacking as bonuses lost on movement hinder it a lot. So even Vets don’t play a lot as snipers, rather take ol good stub and spray to get bonuses fast.
Game lacks sniper weapons for a reason - it’s not viable in a game where you can’t sit and kill heretics form a distance. You can put it in game ofcourse, but that will be compromise where it won’t act really as sniper weapon, but will only look like it by model, just melta can’t be in game. It always will be a lie. Though we have plasma that don’t act like plasma, so they kind of did it anyway. Even bolter isn’t that close to a bolter.
So you will have rattling that won’t fight like most of rattling.
I would rather prefer 10 new maps then such new character.
The new miniatures look so damn good. There’s the obligatory sniper rifles, crossbow, mines and BOMB VEST(!), Combat knife, ammo hound! And they all look like characters from DT already! The bomb vest is super cool. Whole bunch of cosmit s right there off the bat!
In the TTRPG Only War, they have three advanced classes the Fixer (a sort of clan leader crossed with a supply officer), Longshooter (as it sounds, just a sniper), and Trailblazer (a scout).
Sad as it is, I don’t see them bringing much to the table that the Veteran does not already. Not without reworking Vet to avoid overlap; the three classes are echoes of the three Vet classes we already have.
They also don’t bring any weapons to the table that Vets couldn’t. You could introduce needle rifles as a class-specific weapon
but that would be the first exotic weapon we’ve gotten and they don’t seem to want to introduce the more esoteric stuff and I can’t blame them. Just balancing what they already have must be a frightful pain. But other than that? They have no other weapons that we don’t already have and wouldn’t already be covered by Veteran.
Ogryns work because they have melee, tank, and heavy gunner roles that are very useful in our gameplay. In the lore, ratlings are good at hiding, sniping, and cooking and none of those play well into this game. It seems like, at best, they would just be a shorter, slower, weaker Veteran.
And, of course, Fatshark themselves have said they already tested a third perception height and discarded the idea due to technical and gameplay imitations.
Would have been neat; maybe we’ll get them someday in the eventual Battlefront-like, “IG vs everyone” game that somebody has to make someday, right?
Again I’ll say read my previous thread linked at the top for some inspiration.
Every single mechanic doesn’t have a requirement to have been mentioned in lore. That would be way too restrictive for any class. It’s game, not a new lore tome, so fun should be at it’s core.
And as for weapons, they could invent anything as long as it fits and could make anything exclusive for any reason they like. There is no reason a vet can’t hold a flamer but that’s exclusive to a zealot.
A catapult used to launch grenades in a very straight and powerful arc…is just something that came to mind. Or a dart gun that turns that enemy on its allies. Games designers would obviously have a lot longer than 1 minute to think about new weapons and mechanics.
They could also introduce Neddle weaponry for the current archetype, most likely Zealot or shared due to it not being used by the IG on the regular (Ratling use Ballistic Rifles)
Now the problem is that Neddle weapons are made for covert operations, and we’re not doing those sort of things.
@MadMartigan
There is a difference between gating existing weapons from 1 archetype to the other.
Nothing really stop Guardsmen from picking a Thunderhammer, or a Flamer yes.
And creating new thing in the lore.
New archetype (If they even happen) will be picked on sustainability, and Ratling certainly won’t cut it.
Tech Adept is the clear winner in this competition, and then it’s some Xenos, some Beastman (Could work, but most likely won’t happen), a Sister (Of Battle reject)…
