Mods that should be base game please

  1. Numeric UI
  2. Danger Zone* (Better explained in this post: Fix frustrating and unfair elements with pox bursters (and also barrels))
  3. Custom Hud
  4. Compass Bar*
  5. Weapon Customization

These 5 (In no particular order) in my opinion should be base game and I have no idea why they are not. Just to go into some more detail.

Numeric UI:

  1. Team mate ammo/exact health. Only seeing that someone has “yellow ammo” means basically nothing and is not helpful when it comes to decision making on picking up ammo. Not to mention seeing when people are at health break points for stim use is also helpful. Adding these numbers doesn’t complicate the hud at all.
  2. Seeing how much ammo is in ammo packs and how much is overflow ammo. This is so useful its insane it isnt base game. This would likely stop about 99% of ammo hogging if people just could actually see that they are going to over flow their ammo.
  3. Negative dodge count. This should 100% be base game, just have the bars fill in with yellow, then fill in with red as you use up your dodges. Yellow dodge is still effective and having the hud show it the same as red dodge is bad.

Danger Zone*

*Danger Zone probably isnt as much of a no brainer as I initially thought. The bigger issue is explosions not scaling with distance. Being just a hair too close to a burster doing the same damage as one landing ontop of you is silly. Same with a explosive barrel 1mm too close to you sending you flying 30 feet (yes I mix metric and imperial so everyone can understand :)). That is what causes all of the frustration, less so not knowing the exact radius.

Dumb Knockback Video:

So many AOE effects in this game have extremely large area of effects, often time larger then they seem like they should be, and in the case of fire even beyond what is visually shown. Being able to see the actual area of effect of things is incredibly nice and is already done on the health pack and no where else for some reason. Why aren’t these on everything? Its a very minimal effect that fixes so much frustration. I cant count how many times a barrel that is miles away from me blows me off the map because I was just at the edge of its area, or I shoot a pox burster only to get hit for 90% of my health because I was just barely in its range.

Custom Hud

Lets be honest here, the base game UI is horrible for such a fast paced game. Needing to look at the corner of your screen to see your health or these tiny status notifiers. I cant be the only one who spent their first like 50 hours not even knowing you could see these status notifiers. Being able to customize your hud would be so nice, or at the very least move the status notifiers under the dodge/stamina bar and but HP/Toughness in the bottom middle of the screen. I just want to actually be able to see the remaining length of my ability or my stim or whatever while in combat without looking all the way to the corner of my screen.

Or at the very very least, just hud customization in general. I don’t think there can be any argument against that. If that’s too hard then maybe just a few presets?

Really vermintide has HP and weapons at the bottom middle of the screen, can wear least have a option for that?

Compass Bar*

*: Probably the most minor one out of the bunch, but I play a lot of different games and coming back to darktide it always just feel like “why isn’t there a compass bar here”. I’m willing to admit this is probably the least impactful one out of the bunch. But it is just something that feels like it should be there and I have no explanation for it not being there.

This is one that really honest to god I have no idea why its not in the base game. Its so useful for team play being able to call out actual directions for things. Maybe also having a little objective marker on the compass to show the direction of the next objective/airlock. Just in general needing to rely on “forward, back, left, right” is not consistent when everyone is practically always looking in different directions. Its a small UI element that matches the theme of the game, is in a empty area of the screen, and is just useful.

Weapon Customization

Just like, let us put scopes on guns. Why not? A lot of the guns in the game, particularly all the autoguns. Have rails for mounting optics but we just cant for some reason. Like it cant be that it wont match the lore or something, I mean we are slinging around plasma guns and relic blades but a red dot? Now that’s a step too far. Come on.

Maybe let us move where charms are mounted as well maybe. I don’t expect anything like the full mod but come on let us customize our weapons to a degree that is realistic in universe. Plus you can sell scopes for real money or whatever, don’t you guys like money? I’m at the point that I will pay 5$ for a red dot.

Why do These Mods Need to be Base Game?

  1. Console Players.
  2. New players who don’t know mods exist and get a significantly worse experience for it.
  3. People who think mods are cheating.
  4. Game updates breaking mods and requiring massive amounts of work to remake for devs that do it for free. Currently weapon customization mod is still broken and causes constant crashes.
  5. Bugs will be easier to catch if a large portion of the playerbase isnt using mods. More vanilla players = more useful bug reports. If these mods were base game I honestly think the amount of modded players would drop by half.

Did I miss Anything?

I think this is a pretty comprehensive list of mods that I honestly feel like are base game already. Like playing without these feels like playing a beta build of the game. But idk did I miss anything? Obviously there is like healthbars but I get why they were removed, still would be nice to have the option in the base game but I really don’t think it matters that much and it would hurt the visual quality of the game. Make it feel more arcady I guess. You could say that about danger zone as well but I don’t think it really interferes with the game’s aesthetic at all.

Oh and of course the mod that shall not be named because I don’t want to start a argument. Please refrain from turning this thread into that thanks.

Honorable mentions for “I cant think of a single reason why this isn’t base game”

There are more minor things you could add here but I’m keeping this to things that I both cant dismiss as too minor, and make complete sense to be added.

  • Ration Pack (honestly cant believe I forgot about this)
  • Guarantee series of mods (Very easy QOL fix)
  • Mission Brief (I mean really how many times have you seen veterans dump their ammo on no ammo pickup missions? lol)

Dumb minor things that should be done by an intern this Monday:

  • Display Ping (Seriously name another multiplayer game that doesn’t show you ping)
  • Discord Rich Presence (Really minor but its just weird the game doesn’t have it base)

What My Ideal Vanilla Hud Looks Like:

Since most of these are hud things I figured id just include these pics. Im sure someone who actually does UI design could make these look better. But all of this or something similar should be possible in the base game

Reminder of that one time Fatshark released a weapon cosmetic bundle and hellbore had a scope on the promo image. So we know for sure Fatshark could do this if but they choose not to. Along with the fact that weapon customization as a mod is even possible and that the feature was teased in developer interviews before launch.

Updated version is on modders discord until grasmann’s ready to release it on Nexus.

What do you mean? Healthbars hasn’t been removed and it works just fine.

There are a lot of nice mods that contain features that would IMO be necessary for Darktide to feel like a more cohesive or complete game, I’ll list the ones I’m thinking of.

The mods, in no particular order

I’m aware but it has issues with crashing, hence why its not on nexus. That sort of issue is one of the reasons why I made this post.

Healthbars were in the early playtests for darktide but were removed. Its funny going back and reading posts that are like “Oh I’m sure it will be a option in the finished game”.

Definitly a decent few good suggestions. Though a lot of these are very minor QOL that I don’t think 99% of people would notice.

The Guarantee series of mods definitely should just be a QOL update, I mean its literally just increasing the input buffer its probably one line of code lol.

Though I will say Ration Pack is a very good one that 100% should be base game. I struggle to understand why its not really.

I’m dead certain that old set of helbore “ironsights” was just an attachment rail lmao, it makes no sense to me for it to have been anything else

Full auto, keep swinging, maybe skitarius too, should be base game too. It’s been week or more since i played VT 2 or darktide because prior to that i played VT 2 only for around 10 days and my index finger hurts even now because VT 2 got no such mods.

just a few mods i think should be added to the base game:

logmein, hybrid_sprint, chatblock, guarantee_weapon_swap, enhanced_descriptions, no_dodge_jump, StickyFingers, BornReady, AfterGrenade, cancel_loading, custom_hud, crosshairs_fix, crosshairs_remap, recoil_fix, RecolorBossHealthBars, show_crit_chance, smaller_talent_tree, PerfectIndicator, StimmCountdown, let me see my scanner, party_finder_menu, remembrancer, favorite child, ShowMeRealWeaponStats, LetMePlayHavoc, InventoryInspect, InspectFromSocial, InspectFromPartyFinder, DisplayPing, MissionBrief, MissionGrid, CaptainKillfeed, camera_freeflight, DistinctSideMissionIcons, ShowInsignias, CorrectMissionVotingInfo, AlternateGrenadeIcons, creature_spawner, ArtificialLatency, loadout_config

True level is great, but I feel like its another instance of “Well 1% of people might use this to be slightly toxic so we cant do it”.

I mean the same could be said about the havoc rank they could also just let you see your own true level if they’re so worried about it.

Yeah that is the one thing. Honestly I cant pretend to understand fatshark’s reasoning on this sort of stuff. I’m just trying to put together a list that is like 110% absolutely no reason anyone would ever have any reason to argue against its inclusion. I want the least controversial list on earth basically.

Its simple, if devs add TrueLevel they need to do/include few things to avoid abuse;

1)On and Off option and make it off by default when realase so others dont see it.

2)Option to only friends see your level.

Soooo I don’t mean to be the grinch or anything because I respect what you’re doing here but I do not agree with most of these, at least the way they have been presented.

Danger Zone

Extremely buggy poxbursters aside, I feel like preserving the mystery of explosion radii is still the go for overall vibe. You only need to play with barrels a few times to get a feel for the danger zone, and the fire barrel has its own nifty radius indicator.

I’d likely turn this option off immediately, or complain loudly if I couldn’t

Crosshair Hud

This is a strongly opinionated change, and I’m not for it. I dislike crosshair clutter immensely.

Better to introduce additional vanilla UI customisation, no-one could complain about that!

Compass Bar

I feel you on the callouts, but I would really hate to see a compass on my screen. There aren’t any existing elements this could be attached to (are there??) so I’m calling this clutter.

Besides, we are humping around a giant hive planet where buildings sprout from the ceiling and only gravity indicates which way is up. I feel this takes more away from artistry than adds to gameplay.

For my non-controversial Ordoes, I’d like to see:

Psych Ward

Access Mourningstar functionality without loading into the Mourningstar. Cut minutes of load times out of people’s lives!

Especially with RNG weapons and (especially especially) curios. Can you imagine doing a curio shop rotation for 4 characters and having to load into the hub every… damn… time…?

Many More Try (somewhat)

I’d love the ability to mulligan a failed mission, even with randoms. Might be a little controversial but I still think it’s a good idea and simple enough feature (“press R to retry”).

Any small thing to build camaraderie is a plus in my books, and nothing says ‘team’ like looking around at your fellow rejects and thinking “yeah I could go another with these foos”!

Chat Block

Automatically block while typing in chat or minimised. Bonus for controller unplugged (not sure if this happens already with the mod). Pretty sure this is even in VT2 now, so double no-brainer.

True Level

It was mentioned above but I think it’s unfair to dismiss it as controversial in light of your other suggestions. This one is pretty tame imo. I feel like FS intends for progression to be displayed using unlockables like portraits n’ things, but who doesn’t like seeing number go up?

There have been a few cases where people have abused this information, but I strongly feel that these people (the offenders, of course) are puny snivelers and can be safely ignored

I mean I have like 600 hours and I STILL occasionally get caught out by the very edge of explosions or step on the edge of fire. A tiny faint aura on the floor really just doesn’t interfere with the vibe of the game. I do turn the setting down very low so its just a slight suggestion rather then a neon sign and I feel like that could be added to the game easily (obviously preferably as a option). Especially since these sort of indicators are already present on certain things.

Im really talking about better ui customisation more then anything. Though I will say “Crosshair hud” Is a misleading name (im actually just gonna edit the post to say custom hud instead of crosshair hud). Its not on the crosshair, I actually have mine set basically at the bottom of my screen, very little clutter unless you really like the look of the floor for whatever reason.

Its such a minor hud element that I have had a friend watch me stream on discord for 2 hours before yelling “Oh dam you have a compass?”

Ill just show you what my hud setup is like and you can see how much you think it hurts the vibe of the game. I really think it should be vanilla. Crosshair hud is currently broken for me anyways so I just use custom hud for similar effect. I feel like if you showed this to someone who hasn’t played in a while they probably wouldn’t notice its not vanilla.

true level should have an option to show account level too, as a level 50 scum could be anything, someone on their first character, or someone with xp in the thousands.

anyway, it shows in-game, whatever numbers, frames and titles say.

Yeah no I get that. Except for interfering with the vibe, which it absolutely does. Whether or not that matters to you is subjective though.

Spacing an attack by experience and gestalt vs. eyeballs on a ring on the floor is the vibe I’m talking about here. And I don’t think the latter is superior, and introducing it weakens the gamer moment imo.

For a random example, HD2 has you lose the remainder of the magazine when you reload. It’s kind of a painful experience and leads to additional mental load during gameplay. Sure you’d have more bullets without it, but the material advantage is secondary to the game design. And it’s really hard to quantify these things. Gotta fix those bugs though…

Also on the note of barrels, still getting caught out is a plus imo. You’re never too old to get humbled by a ledgebarrel

:+1:

Thanks, I hate it

If this was a more tactical game maybe, but it doesn’t really fit in with the aesthetic and removes some of the chaos which keeps this game spicy.

The explosion radius too, it reminds me of Vampire Survivors… no shade on that absolute piece of work, just that the added utility doesn’t come for free. I’ll say again, snap judgement is part of the gameplay experience, so is Chaos. Visual clarity is one thing, but essentially exposing the coded radius with a widget is a step too far for me.

Well I would get it more if these auras weren’t already on some things. Sure you can say that healthpack and nuxio aquila make sense in universe so that works.

Whats the in universe explination for this? Why is it okay on specifically this attack and nothing else? I’m guessing they play tested the twins boss and found it annoying to be unsure on the exact radius of their bombs… But that doesn’t apply to anything else? Should it be removed from these then?

I actually never played with 3, 4, or 5.

But I would add:

Hub hotkeys

Killfeed improvements

Player outlines

True level

Who are you

Psych ward

Creature spawner

Score board (controversial)

Stimm countdown

Markers AIO

More characters and loadouts

For one the little gas bomb has such poor visual cues for the danger zone, and quite a punishment for being caught in it. I think it could be better designed.

Healthpack I believe does not have a radius in vanilla, there is a mod for that.

Both of these examples are quite rare, so I wouldn’t say that range indicators are commonplace.

Should they be made commonplace? I don’t think so. Also quite frankly “in-universe explanation” is not a metric that I particularly care about. I reckon the range indicators could be quite a useful accessibility add-on for many players so I’m not opposed to their introduction (behind an option toggle, default off). Also for testing mechanics, which benefits many.

Kind of the ideal basis for a mod imo, unfortunately for console players.

Honestly you make a decent point on the “Could be better designed” thing. I think that applies to like all the explosives in the game really. Pox bursters doing 90% of your health when you are on the very edge of their explosion is silly, same with barrely giving you max knock back even if you are right on the edge of their radius. All of these things should have scaling damage with distance. That would probably reduce all the frustration involved with them.

Getting OHKOed by a burster is a lot less annoying if you actually mess up and let one land on your, rather then if you push one but dodge back just 1% too little.

The issues with poxbursters go well beyond simply gauging the explosion radius. Aggro handling, latency issues, sound cues, not detonating… etc. I think this is well known though.

Distance scaling on explosions should absolutely be a thing on poxbursters, I’m surprised it’s not(?)! Barrels I think have it though.

Yeah this is a big issue imo, “harsh but fair” only works if it’s fair and we are a far cry from that with all the server/engine/code issues going on right now!
