Launcher not starting and Backend error

Issue Type (Required):

Error - Backend Error

Issue Description (Required):

I recently reinstalled Vermintide 2 after putting it down for a few months, but I am no longer able to play.

When I try to boot up the game via Steam, nothing happens. The launcher does not start and I have to kill the app via task manager.

When I launch the game using the “Bypass launcher” beta option, it tries to start the application, but crashes and show and shows an error telling me to boot the game’s 32-bit version.

If I try to launch the game directly from the executable, the game boots, but fails to login and gives me a backend error.

I have so far tries reinstalling the game, clearing all game files and reinstalling the game, reinstalling Easy Anticheat for Vermintide 2 and running an ‘sfc /scannow’ command in windows command prompt. The issue persist.

Sorry to hear this @Max536

I recommend running through our launcher solutions, specifically repairing your .NET Framework installation, here:

Please let me know how you get on!

I just did a “Verify Integrity of game files” and tried both with the launcher and with the launcher bypass beta, but the issue persist.

@Max536, Did you also try repairing your .NET Framework installation?

I just tried the .net framework repair tool and then rerunning a “SFC /scannow”, but the issue persist.

Hm okay, I’m a little stumped by this!

Have you made any changes to your PC’s hosts?

None that I am aware of.

Okay thanks! Another thought, is to try launching with administrator permissions for both Vermintide 2 and the launcher. To do so:

  1. In your Steam library, locate Vermintide 2
  2. Right-click and go to ‘Manage’ > ‘Browse local files’
  3. In the Vermintide Steam directory go to the ‘launcher’ folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\launcher
  4. Right-click on Launcher.exe and select ‘Properties’
  5. Go to the ‘Compatibility’ tab
  6. Enable the “Run this program as administrator” checkbox and ‘Apply’ changes
  7. Next, in the Vermintide Steam directory go to the ‘binaries’ folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\binaries
  8. Right-click on vermintide2.exe and select ‘Properties’
  9. Go to the ‘Compatibility’ tab
  10. Enable the “Run this program as administrator” checkbox and ‘Apply’ changes

If you’re using Direct X12, then please also change the following Administrator privilege:

  1. In your Steam library, locate Vermintide 2
  2. Right-click and go to ‘Manage’ > ‘Browse local files’
  3. In the Vermintide Steam directory go to the ‘launcher’ folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\binaries_dx12
  4. Right-click on vermintide2_dx12.exe and select ‘Properties’
  5. Go to the ‘Compatibility’ tab
  6. Enable the “Run this program as administrator” checkbox and ‘Apply’ changes

Failing this, you mentioned performing a reinstall and clearing game files. Can I check that AppData was cleared? Otherwise, please try a clean reinstallation of Vermintide 2:

I just did and am now getting the following notice when trying to boot up the game from Steam.

If I click OK, I then get the following warning:
image

Hm okay. If you click cancel on this message does the game then launch?

Otherwise, please disable the admin permissions and try a clean reinstallation next.

Apologies for the inconvenience!

It does not. I tried disabling admin permission, uninstalling the game, clearing the steam and appdata folder for Vermintide 2.

I then reinstalled the game, and it does not boot up of shows any error message. Nothing happens :frowning:

Hmmmm  okay another suggestion - it could be worth checking that Anti-Virus/Firewall isn’t quarantining or blocking any processes.

I recommend adding the following Anti-Virus and Firewall exceptions:

  • vermintide2.exe in \Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\binaries
  • vermintide2_dx12.exe in \Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\binaries_dx12
  • EasyAntiCheat.exe in \Program Files (x86)\EasyAntiCheat
  • Launcher.exe in \Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\launcher

If the above doesn’t work, could you please provide your most recent console log and launcher log. Hopefully logs have been generated from today! :crossed_fingers: thank you!

I have tried adding those executables as exception to my firewall and antivirus, but the issue persist. Here is the Launcher log. I no longer have a console log since I cleared my folders as part of the earlier troubleshooting and no new console log have generated so far.

Hi @Max536,

Very sorry to hear this. Unfortunately the launcher log is cutting off abruptly, and doesn’t give any indicators of the root if the issue here. At this stage, you appear to have exhausted all of our usual solutions and I’m admittedly at a bit of a loss with further suggestions.

I appreciate it isn’t an ideal outcome, but I’d be happy to assist with a refund and can contact Steam on your behalf. Please let me know if this is something you’d wish to do.

Apologies that I’ve been unable to help more :frowning:

I do love the game and would much rather be able to play again. Do you have any other idea of what could potentially be causing this?

Of course, no worries! It’s honestly very difficult to say, as you’ve ruled out an installation issue with a clean reinstall, tried our launcher solutions and workaround, checked launcher permissions and added Anti-Virus/Firewall exceptions. This seems to be a very stubborn issue

You mentioned reinstalling after a few months break, so I would consider any changes to your PC that have happened during this time.

Some other things worth trying/checking -

  • Ensure latest Windows updates are installed
  • Ensure GPU drivers are up-to-date
  • Try disabling background applications with a ‘Selective Startup’:
  1. Press the Windows key
  2. Type ‘msconfig’ and select ‘System Configuration’
  3. On the ‘General’ tab, select ‘Selective Startup’
  4. Deselect ‘Load startup Items’
  5. Reboot your PC
  • Reinstall Visual C++ Redistrubatables:
  1. Uninstall the Visual C++ 2015 Redistributables
  2. Reinstall the Visual C++ 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 Redistributables: Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn

Please keep me updated  :crossed_fingers:

I tried the previous instruction but it was still not booting.

I ended up reformating my hard drive and reinstalling steam and the game and Vermintide 2 is now able to boot, but unfortunately it looks like my save progress was not kept and it booted me on the tutorial. That gave me a good scare and I rebooted the game again, but it now shows all my progress and everything seems to be working fine.

This issue is resolved and may be closed. Thank you for your assistance.
