Lack of cover lean makes firefights painful

Many modern FPS games have implemented a system of leaning around cover when you aim down sights while facing it, and I think Darktide would benefit greatly from that. The suppression mechanic is wonderful and incentivizes tactical gameplay, but it feels very clunky to have to fully expose yourself to return fire.

Agreed. This problem especially impacts the Sharpshooter, who can struggle in mid-ranged firefights. It’s too easy to find yourself in a situation where you can’t ever return fire or even get a sense of the enemy’s position without eating laser, especially on missions with the fog modifier. It also means that you can’t get much mileage out of your own ability to suppress the enemy as there’s often no safe way to do it. Personally I’d find an old-school style of leaning tied to Q and E perfectly acceptable.

Yeah should be added, but i prefer an automatic corner peeking. Idk about the other player :-/

Truth be told its not the lack of cover thats the problem its the fact that when you get hit, you stagger and are pushed back, moving you out of that little bit of cover you can find.

Funny thing is enemies do lean around cover. Or at least it looks like they do

Honestly I think this game would feel terrible with cover-leaning, especially automatic cover leaning – rarely have I ever seen automatic peeking work as intended, let alone in any sort of beneficial way. The only class that would really benefit from leaning is, arguably, the Veteran. I cannot see Psykers, Zealots, let alone Ogryns using it for any other reason than habit.

Besides, like you said, nearly every modern shooter has this feature or is built with it in mind. It’s a breath of fresh air for that not to be the case here.

I would like to be able to lean manually with Q and E.

BUT:
I passionately hate auto-lean. It is always clunky and imperfect, because it always consists of the devs trying to read your mind based on exactly where you are standing and how you are pointing your gun relative to a specific piece of cover. It is infuriating and I think would actually put me off the game completely.

Nothing more frustrating than your character starting and stopping leaning as you’re strafing around a corner while trying to divide the pie / play the angles game. It feels horrid.

I have a great advice for you sharpshooters! Click “1” and please use that Emperor’s gift you find there.

Seriously though, I admit there is a problem with half-covers not providing sufficient protection and I hope this gets better, but I say NO to any leaning and strongly NO to any automatic behaviour.

I often use cover and i noticed some cover is too short. Even if you can’t see anything the enemy can shoot the top of your head. I now trained myself to look at my feet when in cover and it seems to work.
