I have only had one GPU driver error so far after 2 hours of gaming, and that just put me back to the menu where I could reconnect immediately. Considering I was getting ~8 crashes an hour before it’s an amazing improvement.
Before I the exp build I had tried verifying game files, and also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and that had made no difference. Definitely something that removing Appdata fixed (possibly in conjunction with the exp build).
Then I would advise everyone who still gets these high amount of crashes to do the following:
1.
Delete the %appdata%\Fatshark\DarkTide folder
2. Switch to the experimental build
3. Verify local game files through steam
4. (If applicable) switch to the recommended settings by the DarkTide launcher
5. Remove every framecap you have and start the game
I had an ungodly amount of crashes (atleast 2-3 per round, sometimes crashes back to back right after reconnect) and right now i have the most stable experience since beta start.
My setup
Rtx 2060
Ryzen 5
16GB Ram
Current nVidia driver
Windows 11
It acually works! I managed to play 7 games without crash, which has never happend before!
Im using exp branch and still crash everytime within 4 games before. However, after setting mesh_streamer, the game become very stable and smooth, even less stuttering! Although vram usage reaches 6gb, but who cares?
2k DLSS balanced working thread setting to 14, it just stopped crashing.
I’ll keep tracking to see if it is just luck.
Same here, around 15 rounds without a crash. @FatsharkPdr your experimental looks like it fixed many crashes. I am not sure if the user settings config or the whole folder is somewhat a cause, but for me its finally working.
Love the game but disappointed with the random crashes sometimes when I first get into a map. Playing on a 13900k and 4090 card on Windows 11. Have no issues on other games on this system that I saved up a while for so it’s a bit frustrating. I have my CPU and GPU running at default speeds for this game.
Anyone have a suggested worker thread count for 13900k? The suggested 29 seems too high and was getting the crashes, so I tried something lower like 8 but without any luck.
I already tried the config file tweaks and using the beta build but still happens.
Thanks for the info… am currently on that experimental beta but I will try one thread and see how it goes…one thing I am going to try is to underclock my 4090…seemed to help someone here I saw.
I was crashing almost every single game on my 4090, had probably over 700 crashes in total but if you’re on Win 11, have you tried reverting back to Win 10? I know it’s a total pain but that worked for me.
Ugh, I really like Windows 11 though…the auto HDR in this game looks fantastic on my OLED.
Glad to hear that solved your crashes. I was starting to get paranoid there is something wrong with my PC but everything else works just fine. Hopefully Fatshark will figure out the issue on Windows 11.
1 worker thread for testing initially sure, but the performance hit will probably be big.
Just to be clear though, I was referring you to the dev post to selectively turn off mesh streaming (you have tons of VRAM anyways) and/or the threaded streamer as advanced troubleshooting steps.
It’s nice to get some more advanced things to try and help troubleshoot, could probably have used this info week(s) ago.
And yeah that Win11 Auto-HDR is great given how the game launched without proper HDR support, even though there’s a ref in the config…
Tried mesh_streamer_settings disabled and threaded_streamer false in 1.0.20 but still got crashes. After that I went back to experimental branch and surprisingly +10 completed matches without crash. At last, one day playing without issue. Will update if any crash appears.
My crashing issues were recently resolved so I turned HDR on yesterday and OMG is it amazing on Win 10. You may not have to go to windows 11. I think the people who are resolving issues by upgrading to 11, or downgrading to 10 are actually resolving the issue by reinstalling Windows. I had an EAC crashing bug during the second beta I resolved by reinstalling windows.
Can you backup all your stuff then reinstall 11?
If you reduce ragdolls to 3 you can reduce the workload on the CPU to make it not as bad of a hit. Still a big hit though.
IIRC, I’m pretty sure your theory on Windows re-install has already been proven wrong by people in this thread; there seem to be specific Win 11 issues.
And as for Win10 HDR it’s NOT the same as Win 11.
Win11 supports Auto-HDR for non-native HDR games (like xbox), this is a major selling point for people with high end OLED screens.
Reinstalling windows is less about fixing the issue and more about nuking all of the variables and random settings and programs accumulated over years. For me with the EAC issue it was much simpler to reinstall than to try and track down the specific issue it was having. For another reinstall success I’ve seen, reduced total system memory usage by about 4 GB. That got the total system memory usage under the 16 GB the computer had. It’s not fixing it, it’s just nuking everything and hoping it helps.
It helps some, but not everyone for sure. We’re not dealing with a single cause of the crashes, there’s a lot of them. For some, like me, reinstalling windows is simple. I only use that computer for gaming. quick backup of saved games and nothing lost. But for many others reinstalling windows is a horrifying prospect.
On HDR, I wasn’t saying windows 10 is equivalent to windows 11, just the HDR looked better than non-HDR. Thanks for the info, whenever I get an OLED I’ll look at installing windows 11. I use the same monitor for work and play so I’m hesitant to move to OLED yet.
I have signed up so I can share with you what worked for me So Far with No crashes Day 3.

Ok so at First the Crashes were super random, it started with the Game crashing but no file in EventViewer, The game will just crash, then started to get event viewer results, then BSOD, like a lot of them, and all were different than the other, it just didn’t make sense, did everything I can from updating drivers, I did update my Mobo, Chipset, MEI, USB all of that. nothing worked, sometimes the crash will happen right when we start the game, sometimes random times during the game. Sometimes I can complete a mission and crashes right at the start of the second mission, in summary, random crashes, random times, random reasons. but one thing for sure it was the game.
What Worked so Far?
Downloaded the latest patch from the game… crashed again! Almost gave up on the entire game.
Downloaded Nvidia with the latest G-Force and took with Suggested settings, which turned off these settings
RTX: Global Illumination ‘Off’
-RTX: Ray Tracing Reflection ‘Off’
-RTX: Ray Tracing ‘Off’
But it changed these settings
RTX: DLSS to ‘Performance’
Fog Quality to ‘Extreme’
Space Reflection to High
Light Quality to ‘Extreme’
Global Illumination to ’ High’
The rest stayed on high settings. Now this kind of worked till the latest patch and started crashing again. playing with CPU cores didn’t do much, lowering or raising , what I think really worked was the solution mention by “chris26609”
And so far no crashes , game is playing smooth, I would suggest playing on experimental & removing appdata Darktide folder ( you will loose some settings like sensitivity aim etc ) Open Geforce and click on suggested settings, and give it a run! if you have AMD I guess lower those settings if you can or reduce graphics settings. I played on both monitors with no issues and high Res to 4K no issues.
