[It's Been Fun] Failed To Compress consistent crash

Issue Type (Required):

Crash - During Play

Issue Description (Required):

For the past week or so I get a “failed to compress” notification (pictured) every match I play. It’s happened well into the match, a few minutes in, as I launch the game and hell, once it happened on the loading screen back to the Mourningstar. I’ve looked it up, and tried multiple things (verifying doesn’t work. I’ve moved it to a different drive, still nothing) Apparently I’ve got an Intel i7 13700k but not Intel XTU so I can’t “underclock the performance core” (sounding like hadron). The other work arounds from this list:

are out of my league, and I’ve done everything I’m comfortable doing right now but it seems I’ll have to say goodbye to this game for the foreseeable future.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if this mostly happens with the 13700K/14700K and 13900K/14900K like the support website indicates and nothing else works then your CPU could be failing. They pull too much voltage and start to fry themselves which means you’ll probably start to get issues in other games as well. Despite being a CPU issue it sometimes manifests as a GPU error of some kind such as an issue with video memory. Intel has a BIOS mitigation that motherboard manufactures are rolling out but it only prevents CPU degradation from starting and it won’t save a CPU that’s already effected. In the mean time they’ve extended their warranty 2 years to get a replacement. Play something else for a while, preferably something that’s hard on the CPU or has a long shader compilation process in the beginning. If that starts to crash too then you’ll know.

Cheers man, I’ll look into getting a replacement. I got my PC upgraded a year ago by a third party so I doubt the warranty still counts but you never know

@Cosmo, sorry to hear this. Have you tried a clean reinstallation of Darktide already? Which involves deleting your Appdata (note any custom settings e.g. keybindings will be lost):

I haven’t tried that no, I’ll give it a try. Although the knowledge that I’m using faulty hardware is still concerning

A full re-install later and I successfully played a full match without crashing. The trade off was audio stuttering/jumping, starting really intense and lessening over time. I’ll still look into a replacement CPU

If that worked then updating your BIOS should keep your CPU from failing. You’ll lose a little performance but it’s still cheaper than getting a new system

Yours will probably look different because it depends on motherboard/manufacturer/chipset/ revision/etc but here’s an example of a Gigabyte motherboard. Make sure it mentions the new microcode update or fixing the Vmin shift issue.

I’m not too confident on doing this myself but I’m having my PC stress tested tomorrow so I can mention this to the guy and see if he can implement it for me

So I had my machine looked over, BIOS updated, guy seemed happy with it.
was just playing a game… and it crashed. Looks like I’ll have to buy a new processor after all. That or it’s just this game

That’s the (not) fun part of this problem. Some stress testing will be totally fine and will finish with no apparent issue. I looked around a bit and found one guy on reddit saying he was able to tell it was his CPU by using the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool and setting the default test to loop while he played games and browsed the internet until it failed.

If you’re really determined you could try that before looking for a new one. I understand how much replacing hardware sucks but it would suck even more if it wasn’t actually failing. Also if you’re only replacing the CPU you should make sure it’s a new unopened box processor. I’m sure some failing CPUs are going to end up on the used market.

I believe I have found a workaround. Lowering the worker threads from 21 to 8 in the launch menu seems to have fixed it

Just an update to this:

Lowering the worker threads seems to alleviate the issue, even if it is a bit of a bad fix. Lowering it to 1 yields the best results with a noticeable decrease in performance. I just tried setting it to 22 worker threads and crashed within ten minutes of starting a match.

Anyway, I don’t know if this is in vain but I’ll post the console log and crash dump stuff here, as I want to ensure it is a hardware issue before I look to purchase a new CPU

EDIT: I have just looked on the intel XTU program and the “performance core ratio” is already at 53x as suggested and yet this issue persists.

Console log:

Crash notification I recieved:

GUID: d4875078-27b7-4a7d-86be-e7902467cd2a
Log File:
Info Type:

[Engine Error]: Failed to decompress: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer 40,000 DARKTIDE\binaries..\bundle\data/10/1088aad8aa0789f8.stream from package 00000000.

Make sure that your game files are not corrupt by in steam. Contact support if this still occur after verifying the game files.

If you tried this already the issue could be due to HW issues that we have seen on Intel Raptor Lake CPUs (13th and 14th generations of Intel CPUs). see https://support.fatshark.se/hc/en-us/articles/360021425793--PC-How-to-Resolve-Data-Corruption-Errors
