Is it normal to leave teammates to die?

I just needed to ask, since it’s become more common in my games and I’m wondering if it’s some sort of trend or tactic. I just had a squad that left me and another guy behind to die while they tried speedrunning ahead and typing orders at us like we’re roleplaying or something. I’m getting this type of squad quite often now, that keeps running into the next rooms while I’m completely surrounded by enemies, making it impossible to stay with them. My smite can’t push them down because of course there’s crushers, ragers, etc. sprinkled in that aren’t easily cc’d. I can only get rid of these hordes with the help of my squad, which seems obvious, but apparently it isn’t to players in higher difficulties.

If someone is surrounded and struggling, I’ll immediately go help them shave down the horde. But if I lag behind even just by a few feet, I’m left to die. I help in any way I can, but that is rarely reciprocated when I’m struggling. It seems like people get some sort of tunnel vision and forget I’m there, then they arrogantly remind me that I’m by myself, as if I got separated ON PURPOSE or am somehow so clueless that I hadn’t realized that fact. I only have so much room to move and dodge, as I’m sure you’re all quite aware if you’ve played a single auric mission. If I can’t move forward and catch up with anyone, it’s because it’s physically impossible, not because I chose to stay for some reason.

I seem to just get people who like to think they’re the best players in the world and play the game like there’s a time limit. Have people forgotten that it’s a team-based game? Is this some sort of tactic used in damnation/auric missions? Do you get a penance for completing the mission faster? I need to know, because it’s becoming worryingly common, and I see no point in playing higher difficulties if I keep getting narcissistic tryhards that feel they can solo the entire game and leave teammates behind. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t fancy having my experience ruined and being treated like I don’t exist while I play my ass off.

It really depends on the situation.

If going back to save someone is a greater risk to the run than leaving them… you should just let them go and rescue them later.

  1. Going for revive is riskier than continuing with 1 man down and rescue at next area.
  2. Many builds require 0 help from teammates to fight any kind of threat so keeping your teammates alive isn’t a priority.

That’s the thing. I always feel like it’s pretty safe to go back, and it should be encouraged. I’ve gotten good enough with smite that I can take out hordes easily if my team just chips in a little. I’m not even talking about reviving, just going back to help someone get away from a horde so they can regroup, which again I feel is doable most of the time. It feels wrong to leave anyone behind, and if it’s not possible for some people, I think they should change their build/playstyle so it is possible.

I just want everyone to feel like they’re in a proper team and having fun. I sometimes see people disconnect as soon as they get downed because they probably think we ignored them. I hate feeling like that, so I like showing them that I’m willing to try and save them, and allow them to keep playing, even though I know they can just get res’d later on. It doesn’t feel like many people think that way. I know the game is hard, but I’d rather die trying to save my squad and just requeue for the same mission again, rather than leave someone behind to get a little further and possibly reach the end.

Also, since I’ve done everything there is to do, finishing a mission isn’t as important to me now. Having a fun experience and keeping everyone alive seems more reasonable to work towards, considering how difficult the game can be.

What difficulty is this on?

Edit: Asking for two reasons.

Smite doesn’t scale with gear or difficulty so groups will react differently depending on the mission difficulty, and they should.

Secondly, the need to work together and the calibre of the people grouping with you goes up exponentially with difficulty.

The sheer irony of this coming from a smite user who somehow managed to go down despite having an infinite cc button that ruins the game for everyone else.

I absolutely prioritize getting people back up. BUT - as I’ve also gotten better at the game I’m increasingly recognizing situations where I simply won’t be able to get the player up.

Too many melee armored elites nearby, the player went down in the open and there are ton of gunners, other team mates are separated and not able to help etc.

In these cases, if I don’t think I can revive the player before their health runs out it’s often just better to leave the mobs on them (drawing aggro essentially) so the team can clear out other threats or get to a safer position to advance for a rescue when the player respawns. If you have stealth, stun, other other abilities rushing ahead a bit to rescue is better than risk going down trying to revive.

There’s so much to unpack here i dont even know where to start…

I get that. I’m normally on damnation and auric, but I can still manage to completely stun everyone and give my team time to at least kill the bigger guys. Maybe I just keep getting unlucky matchmaking, because I know damn well when it’s safe to go back for people and keep fighting. Some people are just spineless. My squads in higher difficulties usually clear rooms and take care of elites quickly, it’s just when they start splitting up that things fall apart. I typically smite the hordes behind us so we don’t get pinched and my squad can focus on our front. People seem to take this for granted and completely forget about our rear until I’m overwhelmed. I literally only need one other guy to help me. If all three people only look forward, there’s only so much I can do.

It’s not as OP as you think it is. I can’t just melt everyone.

depends someone goes down in an area with 17th gunners and no cover im leaving them.

Yes, I’m sure you’re very smart. Why even bother replying?

Surprisingly, gunners haven’t been that much of in issue in the squads I’ve been with. They seem to handle them just fine but I know there isn’t much you can do except take cover and wait for an opening. I won’t try to save anyone when my screen is just a storm of bullets.

I just couldnt help myself pointing those 3 problematic sentences out.
And had an internal conflict whether to take the time and join in on this massacre in the making or just enjoy watching it.
Decided i’ll just enjoy this from afar xD

Ehhhh… Good luck to you.

Smite is a divisive topic. The power level is ok, just can make things boring and can teach dependency.

Sure. I just get mad when it’s obviously safe to help me or someone else and my teammates just refuse. In the past, I’ve told my team to just leave me to die and keep going when it’s unsafe. I’m fine with that. I’ve just had too many cases where a horde is only around me and my team has all the opportunity to help, but don’t. I’m fine with taking some hits and having the attention of every enemy if my team just chips in. Then to add insult to injury, I get some people who spam pings as if that’ll make me magically float away from the horde and catch up with everyone. I’M OBVIOUSLY TRYING TO KEEP UP BUT I’M A BIT BUSY!

I’m sure it’s not hard to just type out something helpful, instead of being arrogant and adding absolutely nothing. Thank you for another useless reply.

I don’t think anyone wants to say it, but I’m going to be generous and not dance around the issue. I’ll give it to you straight. You can choose to do what you will with this information. The two words above are the root cause.

Smite is an extremely strong ability that allows a well built psyker to basically turn off the enemy formation in a large radius, it works at any difficulty and in some ways works better at high difficulty where enemy density can become a real challenge to overcome. Smite is such a powerful ability that it absolutely increases the win-rate when it is included in a coordinated team. But it requires that the psyker be a competent combatant on their own, or that other players do the work for them.

For players at a certain skill level and especially certain classes like zealot and ogryn or a melee vet build or even a melee/gun psyker: smite ruins the game for us. While I hold no special grudge against a player who is using an ability that is in the game, I personally hate playing with smite psykers and so do a lot of other players. Why do I hate playing with smite psykers? Because i like to play my video games. If I wanted to hit pinatas I would go to the psychaneum. I have mods that let me spawn as many pinatas as I want. But that is boring. Often times when I am playing with a smite psyker I will also just sprint ahead, rushing to get to the next room before the psyker so that the psyker stops turning off all my enemies so I can actually play the game. Now I am not opposed to rescuing another player if they go down. Please see the attached damnation game (wanted to try the lights out thing) where I rescued or revived the 2 smite psykers and 1 assail psyker a combined 19 times.

However If I am too far away or if the situation is too dangerous, I may not be able to rescue the psyker if they go down, so I will have to rescue them when they respawn in order to ensure a successful game. Not all players are as willing to be helpful as me.

This leads into a brief discussion on the definition of teamwork. Some people believe teamwork is being all in coherency moving as a murder ball. However since the game can be solo’d or duo’d at the highest difficulties - there are other ways to operate as a team given a commensurate level of skill. If one player is largely by themselves but can move to free another player from disablers, and they are taking aggro and dispatching enemies competently, then they are playing sufficiently as a team because all of those problems are handled. A smite psyker who cannot kill their own targets is asking the other players to kill things for them and is actually a dead weight on the ankle of the team. I’m not accusing any individual player of being this, I’m just stating that this is a perspective I know people hold. The view I have heard from some players is if you cannot handle it yourself you are actually working counter to correct team play.

I hope this helps explain what you are experiencing and why.

Definitely, but I feel like it’s essential at high difficulties. I see what you mean when it comes to a few crushers, but there’s only so much dodging and blocking you can do when there’s ten of them, along with maulers, ragers, etc. Some of them still get through and get some hits in, but it’s better than all of them getting hits in at once. There’s still plenty of challenge.
