Relaunch? Nah. Fatshark committed themselves to the “live” service model, probably because they struggled to deliver the scope they set themselves. They are not known as a studio with timely content releases and for some reason things got worse since Vermintide 2. I’m personally concerned, that unlike VT2, Darktide does not have the critical mass required to carry on in terms of content.
Darktide was made in ways to let them introduce content much faster and much more easily
yet they still failed despite that “advantage”
That was the official intention, but frankly 6 months on, I see zero evidence of that, even if you allow for an “unexpected” period of criticial fixes.
That’s the problem. They seem so busy trying to squash mostly irrelevant bugs for the Xbox release without realising that most of them aren’t horribly game breaking anymore and the real zone they’re hurting in is content. Players WILL tolerate some bugs if the game is fun and puts its focus on statsfying its players. but they wont tolerate a stale product.
This is evidenced by all the positive reviews of buggy but fun games that read like “yeah this is a buggy mess but its so fun to play and they’re making constant improvements”
What grinds my gears is that FS is soooo slow to address 95% of the things that need addressing. But the 5% of the things that they happen to quickly address are things like exploits (which often are also “fun”), things that are glitched and stronger than anticipated, or other unintentionally “fun” things (like the upper body shirtless skin). It really makes you wonder that if FS can swiftly address these 5% issues, why they can’t address the other 95% more swiftly either. At least some of the time. It’s crazy but it’s been this way since before VT2. Maybe we’re crazy for expecting the same behavior to lead to a different outcome
Can’t stop anyone from dreaming but the reality is that FatShark is not a developer that can sustain the kind of cadence required for a “live service” game to compete in the market.
Their artists are clearly passionate and talented but FS management is … yikes
I’m one of the ones that thinks Darktide is still one patch away from greatness.
There are only 2 things to change, and its literally just a number to tweak:
- number_of_locks = 0
- endmatch_plasteel = endmatch_plasteel x 10
While that would certainly be nice, it wouldn’t be enough. There’s just not enough substance beyond that, in classes, weapons, maps/missions, etc. While they could start focusing on that afterwards, doing those 2 things would not make DT a great game in its current state, just a less infuriating one.
Nah. That doesn’t do anything for me, honestly. I know why people hate the locks and i hate them too. It prevents build customization and makes it so hard and frustrating to get fun weapons. But at this point i need classes or new weapons or new maps and enemies (as 3 categories) to stay engaged. Something i was promised when the game was sold to me 6 months ago.
By greatness, I mean commercial success.
There is plenty of content for new players in their first 60 hours.
I wouldn’t say that is greatness. Its already a failure in the computer market. Console could still happen if they take your advice and improve crafting for new players. You are absolutely right the game can be perfectly fun and satisfying, if a few painpoints are removed, for 100~ hours. And a commercial success is a good thing.
no
You have to admit that this one was close though mate I think that’s why its so frustrating.
While the current senior management remains in place at ObeseFish the current state of the game is likely to persist, until it eventually withers and fades away. The issue is not the boots on the ground. It is not the fault of the animators, artists, modellers, level designers, backend team, QA team, community team etc.
This all comes down to a scheduling issue. Either not enough time was given to complete by launch, or they spent too long p*****g around kicking their heels in pre-launch, too many complacent design meetings and too late to start biting the bullet. Senior management decided the launch date. Senior management decided to push the game out of the door as an unfinished and broken alpha product. Senior management are the ones ultimately responsible for the timeline of repeated failures and demonstrably dishonest and false statements.
It is plain to see that there is a core of a good game here and that the technical staff are good at their jobs, when they have enough time and the right environment to be able to do their best work. ObeseFish is the textbook definition of “lions led by donkeys”.
It is probably best to keep in mind that you are effectively dealing with Tencent Sweden inc. at this point in time, and adjust your expectations accordingly (as in lose all hope and resign to the inevitable).
Well, not sure about these 2…
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
If I had a dime for every time someone has declared something dead, boycotted, over or cancelled in current times, I’d have enough money to buy out Elon Musk’s companies.
Doom and Gloom seems to be everywhere these days.
Well considering that I did none of those things, simply stating that things will not get better and that they will eventually fizzle out down the line, you may be well served to actually read comments properly before responding, as opposed to facerolling on your kb to produce your default knee-jerk response.
An abject lack of observational skills seems to be everywhere these days. xx
Excuse me, you said it will wither and fade away. Which is synonymous with “it’s dying”.
Your words, not mine.
Love the idea, truly I do. But we’re talking Fatshark here… There’s no way they could ever pull that off. They just cannot do it. It’s not possible.
IMO, the only way this game would get a relaunch it deserves is if Fatshark went under and some other game company picked up the Tide series.
