Everyone who is confused by the story…why? The mortis trials are clearly a selection program for an elite tier, aka mortis operatives.

I don’t know much about the lore but just from Stefani (or whatever her name is) says in the intro before each match, this seems very obviously the narrative to me. What’s so confusing about it?
They’re not training you to fight. They know you can fight. They’re training you to become a mortis operative.
“Mortis Operatives are a secret cadre within Grendyl’s warband, and you aren’t cleared for that information”
Just like when sas choose the best soldiers to go into SAS training.
