not sure why but something about how the description is phrased and maybe that you go into the psych for it . is this new trials a solo mode?
I’m hoping it’s the endless arena mode I’ve been requesting ![]()
I did suggest it could be dressed up as a pyschanium training arena so it could actually be! ![]()
Basically the formula for Super Smash TV but in DT.
A lot of people are going to dislike that. Nothing worse than being told your missions are in a bloody DREAM. Immersion requires stakes or a sense or risk. Its also yet another seperate mode, that will further pull the small playerbase apart.
That being said, if this entire thing is just a very convoluted way of adding solo mode, I’ll have no other complaints about it. Its been a long requested feature that was promised back at launch.
The rewards for the Mortis Trials sound absolutely idiotic. I’d rather just have a progress bar. This is primarily because the NPC writing in this game has been mostly disastrous. Characters like Sefoni, the Barber, that stupid Swagger character (wtf???) and so many more.
I’d rather go sit outside for an hour than work towards more information about that cast of CLOWNS.
Back to Ubersreik in VT2 were also missions that happen in Dreams, where the whole thing is Olesya Pimenova having the U5 stop a Dream ritual that a Rot Blood sorcerer is doing, distabilizing it.
Might be the same case here, Sefoni having to do warp dream battles against some chaos Psykers.
Yeah it sounds awful. I couldn’t care less.
Only possible redeeming factor to this is it MIGHT be the promised solo mode. If that is the case, then the people who want it will finally have it, and I can utterly disregard the game mode and never play it, because it will add nothing to the game experience for me.
Of course it’s not solo mode. People have been asking/demanding solo mode since release. You think they would implement it in such a weird way and then not even announce it?
Well, it’s FS, so anything is possible, except giving the players what they want.
I really doubt of it… they would have announced it.
I think about waves of enemies. could be wrong.
Anyways, even if it was solo, I want a TRUE solo game mode.
Just finished HERESY-Archivum Sycorax in solo. Was great (45 min). But bots are absolutely bad. At the end I had to let them behind and die to progress cause the weapons they have are too weak (and never buffed by fatshark). How can you be efficient with a catachan sword or a tactical axe? this is worst melee weapons. MG IV lasgun, headhunter… all these weapons should have been buffed for 1 year and half!
Not gonna lie, I would bet money on literally no one in my friend group caring about that at all.
The story in Darktide has been so barebones that who cares if it is a dream sequence at this point? If they didn’t do such a good job with the 40k aesthetic, there would be nothing holding the whole thing together anyways.
That ship sailed. It’s all about whether or not the gameplay is fun at this point. If story stuff happens in the same manner that it has been, sure cool whatever. As long as the 40k aesthetic isn’t drastically diverged from, immersion won’t be effected for most people.
edit - Kind of like Monster Hunter in that regard. Yeah there’s story in Wilds this time, but no one really cares, no one has for the past 15+ years. Just there for the aesthetic and the gameplay.
I’m quite excited about them to be honest. I also wondered if they are solo play, but I doubt it.
Getting to some characters’ secrets on the way sound appealing too!
I mean, pretty sure dreams matter a lot more in 40k than they do irl. One bad dream could be the difference between a good night’s rest and your head exploding, unleashing untold daemonic forces onto your unsuspecting bunkmates.
Also, I am not sure how much narrative risk is necessary to immerse someone in Darktide. My immersion comes strictly from the intensity of combat and not wanting to get downed/die/lose the match. I’m not really thinking about the narrative consequences of failure, since like a dream, they don’t persist. It’s not permadeath, and It’s not like helldivers where our collective performance impacts the overall story in any meaningful way.
I don’t like the idea of moving away from the actual stakes of the game. I mean okay, some people clearly don’t care about the narrative, but can we at least try and pretend like we’re fighting to liberate the planet from heretics? Its an actual war. We could focus on it and use it for the narrative structure around the missions.
That way the people who don’t care can do what they were going to do anyway (just blast stuff), and those of us who do care about lore, character investment and stakes can feel immersed.
The description sure reads like it is a solo mode. Could be a step towards a full on co-op/solo mission mode with a wide variety of adjustable modifiers.
There hasn’t been any stakes or consequences at all in any mission. Anything we do are narratively undone immediately. There’s not even a veneer, facade or illusion of any narrative progression on the war front.
What a reward
Additions to a story left in the dumpster for 2 years, yippee
I get what you say, and I mostly agree.
But let’s not pretend the actual game makes us feel there was a war going on. Helldivers 2 is, with the story that evolves every week. Darktide is not… and cannot.
I’d actually pay to make Masozi, Hallowette and Zola shut the fcck up. We’re at a point where I’m willing to pay them money, not for MTX, but to un-annoy the goddamn game.
This is coming from the studio that delivered great characters like Olesya, Sienna and Kerillian. Insane.
Zola is alright. Halowette is the most cringe character in a any game I played. Masozi gets annoying quick.
The spy master and Dukane are also super obnoxious. I don’t know who did the writing for these characters, but they didn’t deserve the job.
For some reason the playable characters are much better written and voiced to the point that I cannot imagine these are the same writers.
Thats the bit that kills me.
The quality of the writing for characters in Vermintide 2 was amazing! You’d think it’d be impossible for a company to overlook the importance of keeping such a crucial aspect of their success.
The question for me is who has gone? In Vermintide 2 the sound design is the same guy as Darktide, Matthew Ward. But thats sound design, so unlikely to affect VA.
The only other thing it might be, and I obviously have no inside knowledge just online research, the original Script writer for Vermintide 2 was Tereza Dosek, and I can’t find them anywhere listed for Darktide at all.
The biggest change I can see, that likely affected the writing, is Narrative Design. Vermintide 2 had Magnus Liljedahl in that role, and they get no mention at all in Darktide credits.
Infact, Darktide has at least 4-5 more people listed in Narrative design and direction than the previous game. Too many cooks in the kitchen, perhaps?
I’ve decided to list them, because I find it funny.
Narrative Director - MĂĄrten Stormdal
Narrative Design - Anton Aleksandrov, Damian Becedas
Additional Narrative Design - Tor Helmstein
They also list Dan Abnett and Aaron Dembski Bowden, but I’ll disregard that from my calculations as they likely just sent a couple PDFs via email.
I never heard of these people, but I can tell some of them thought “Thor: Love and Thunder” was peak comedy and that someone with the personality of an uppity Starbucks barista could hold a high military rank in the 40k verse.
Remember when quips were used sparingly on the characters it made sense to use them for and were funny?
And now they’re everywhere and make me want to throat punch writers that use them as a crutch for their lack of comedic talent.
That and the writers that excessively use the “Get a load of X thing, totally weird, right? Please laugh.”
They quip now? They quip now. ![]()
edit - not saying all the above are in Darktide, your post just reminded me of all those things I despise.
