How does suppression works?

what does the “+X ranged attack suppression” things do ?

do they increase the radius of the suppression or how long the ennemy stay suppressed or the size of the ennemy suppressed? is it how fast they are suppressed ?

I think it affects how much suppression firing a weapon applies, to faster reach the point where an enemy starts a suppression animation.

I know it has no affect on suppression duration or the cooldown before an enemy can be suppressed again.

Every ranged weapon has a suppression value and every enemy has a suppression threshold (multiple, levels, I think). Shooting near enemies applies suppression to them. When you reach the threshold, the enemy (or enemies) will cower or attempt to run for cover. Enemies will quickly shed suppression applied to them if you stop applying it.

“+ ranged suppression” makes your weapon apply more suppression with each shot. In practice, this makes you suppress enemies faster.

I’m pretty sure there’s an AoE element to it as well which controls how wide of an area the suppression is applied to, but I haven’t paid enough attention to it to figure out how that part works.

I believe it increases “suppression damage”, like how stagger damage works, but I’m not sure.
For instance, if you fire above the heads of Heretic Shooters they will after a few rounds stop shooting back run for cover, that’s suppression.

I have tested the Ogryn lvl 2 unique blessing that increasingly get more suppression the longer you fire with the Heavy Stubbers.

From my tests i notice that when the blessing is on 5 stacks, enemies running towards you begin to stumble and slow down, even if you miss them, and Heretic shooters hardly want to poke out the barrel of their gun.

At the same time we have other blessings, like the one on the Revolvers that suppresses enemies within X meters after a close range kill.
This kind of suppression is different, the suppression in this case is an “aura” or area of effect type of suppression around you in a sphere.

So… About suppression, my conclusions is the following:

  1. Every ranged weapon has a fixed suppression value.
1.1. The suppression is a status effect that decays over time depending on suppression level.
1.2. All enemies has a level of suppression resistance.
1.3. A very clear example of suppression is when Ogryn Reapers duck their head behind their armoured shoulder when you’ve smacked them in the head with any weapon enough times.
  2. The default suppression dealt to enemies are direct hit bullets or “close call bullets”.
2.1. Meaning, bullets that either directly hit the enemy or whizz by close to them are the ones that deals “suppression damage”.
  3. Another type of suppression is the area of effect suppression.
3.1. Affects all enemies around you in a sphere of X-diameter.
3.2. Is only accessible from blessings.

I made up my mind about suppression and it’s usefulness after i tested the blessing “Ceaseless Barrage” on my Ogryn’s Mk VII Heavy Stubber. And my take on suppression is now that it’s an underestimated game mechanic that we should pay more attention to.

My tests made it clear that ranged engagements became a heck of a lot more manageable, and lessened the threat level of ranged engagements for all party members.

This “Ceaseless Barrage” blessing on 5 stacks causes so much suppression that the enemy will not thing once, twice or even thrice before poking out their head again to return fire.
This is a very strong tool for controlling ranged engagements.

However, something i have noticed is that all “las-type” guns (e.g., Laspistol & Recon lasguns) has VERY low suppression damage, so before you suppress the enemy you will have taken quite a few rounds yourself in the process.

One thing i like to know if suppression even works on specials and elites as i only saw groaners, poxwalkers and shooters play the suppress animation.

It works on gunners, maybe shotgunners - Scab Gunners are the most vulnerable of that group afaik. I don’t think it works on melee elites/Ogryn. I’m unsure about specialists
