Heinous Rituals is frustrating in a way that does not feel healthy for Havoc

The Heinous Rituals modifier in Havoc is one of the least enjoyable modifiers in Havoc mode.

The core issue is that it forces the team to advance regardless of the current state of play. In theory, I understand the intent: create pressure, prevent turtling, and force decisive movement. In practice, though, it often pushes the team into situations that feel less like a skill check and more like the game piling failure conditions on top of each other.

Trying to reach the ritual often means pushing into additional hordes, patrols, specials, or boss pressure while the team is already fighting to stabilize. The modifier’s intent seems to be “move with purpose,” but in practice it often becomes “advance regardless of the current state of play.”

That would be more acceptable if the failure state were manageable, but activating a daemonhost in Havoc is severe enough that the team has to treat the ritual as a disaster event. At the same time, reaching and killing it is frequently unrealistic. The timer speeds up as you get closer, leaving roughly 30-45 seconds to finish it once engaged, which is very little time when the team is already pinned down by high-Havoc pressure.

The result is that the modifier does not create an interesting decision. It uniformly forces a bad one: push forward at the wrong time and risk wiping now, or ignore it and risk wiping later when the daemonhost activates. That shifts success away from smart play and toward spawn luck, patrol timing, and whether the mission happens to give you a clean path.

Some possible ways to improve it:

  • Add more time to the “close proximity” speed up timer, or eliminate it entirely.

  • Slow the timer while the team is actively fighting near the ritual.

  • Reduce the amount and health of channelers on the ritual

  • Reduce triggers and spawn rates around ritual locations .

  • Make the modifier reward aggressive play without requiring suicidal advancement. Example, add a damage reduction field in the area around the ritual, one which the team can keep for a period of time if they defeat the ritual.

  • If the ritual does activate, make the health of the daemonhost relative to the number of channelers alive when it activates. This encourages good range play.

I do not mind difficult modifiers. Havoc should be hard. But there is a difference between challenging and frustrating, and Heinous Rituals crosses the line. Right now it feels less like a fair skill test and more like an RNG punishment that is neither fun nor engaging.

It undermines the part of Darktide that is most fun: reading the fight, stabilizing under pressure, making smart decisions, and then pushing when the team has earned the space to do so.

The idea has potential, but it is currently one of the few modifiers that makes me enjoy the mission less the moment I see it, and the only modifier I actively avoid.

It is one of my least-favorites, because of bugs where multiple rituals will spawn (sometimes so you can’t even see progress on a second one and don’t even know you need to push), or one will get into the triggered state from far away, leaving you nearly zero time to reach it.

Heinous is possibly the only one I don’t mind, not much hazard to be aware but keeping good tempo. Ogryns can bully DH if you don’t, never pass up slab difficulty adjustment. Good second season add. Its just bugged to hell, but most modifiers and triggers for bosses are so I take it as intended havoc nonsense.

Rituals is so crazy. Cuz when it’s working right, it’s the best havoc mutator in the game, hands down. But when it’s not working right, which is a solid 20-30% of ritual missions, it’s a disaster that creates some real feels bad man moments.

It’s wild how big the spread is on that.

Ogryn with bull charge and frag bomb is my personal solution to buggy rituals, as long as the team is not completely braindead and doesn’t help you at all. I often clear rituals solo by just throwing frag bomb across the map without coming close to the ritual. Concetration stimm is also very useful for duelling woken up Daemonhosts, you get like 3 Bullcharges and it should be enough to nearly stunlock DH.

It’s best not to push buggy rituals in case there are additional boss triggers or crazy gunner packs on standby nearby. Sometimes fighting DH is more safe, the team has to make that decision based on what they have and how safe/unsafe it is.

I guess oneshot Zealot with Thunder Hammer is nice to have too in case it wakes up, if only this build weren’t bad for every other type of engagement.

But yeah it’s completely buggy which ruins it, but they’ve given up on fixing it properly.

biggest problem i have with it is not really the design, just the lack of quality control around it. by all means make me fight demonhosts it’s fun but not for reasons outside of my control because of bugged timers

Rituals are the best havoc modifier, in no small part thanks to the bugged ones. It often enforces chaos, and overcoming chaos is what makes this game the most fun.

Make sure your build is capable of killing DHs efficiently if need be, learn how to adapt on the fly and you’ll have a blast!

Rituals is the best modifier because it forces teamwork and cooparation under heavy pressure. This is exactly what I want from darktide.

It is made 10 times easier if everyone in the team understands how it works, so again, it’s something ppl have to learn outside of the game - in kuli guides and using mods - to understand why some rituals skip progress and why it becomes faster.

Fatshark hate their players so much that in the latest patch they even sped up these rituals

I kinda like the bugs alongside it. It forces you to think about the case of a demo host attacking you when crafting your build.

I have seen many people write they enjoy it a lot, because it adds a difficulty and forces you to adjust to behaviour other than numbers go up.

I enjoy it when its not bugged.

timer should start only if you are nearby the ritual
but sometimes it starts even if you are far away
