Give us tools to make our own maps

In the long term, I would like for FS to provide the tools for us to make our maps.

Of course, not XP is reward and resources given, to avoid farming…

But giving us the ability to create and our own maps would be really cool long term, will give players something to do, highlight creative artists, but most importantly take the pressure off of FS to provide all the content…

This is one of the biggest reasons why the likes of L4D2 has lasted so long, apart from being a great game… The community was able to create their own maps…

Something like this would work great Darktide, maybe the other tides too… Would certainly keep players coming back years into the furture.

I think everyone agrees on this being a good idea. I think this kind of stuff is one of the reasons people get so heated about the things Darktide has failed at.

The potential for a 40K L4D2 lasting 10-20 years from now is incredible.

Would love a map editor! But if they have the ability to make pieces out of a map, that begs for me to ask again for randomly generated maps.

Left 4 Dead was not a live service and live service runs on constant upsells, I don’t think this possible unless you will also run the infrastructure of your own like WOW pirate realms.

It is something that would be great to have, but I don’t think it’ll happen for quite a lot of reasons.

IP holders, map graphic quality, complex enemy and player pathing…

I think there’s the potential to make the game worse with this idea.

Randomly generated maps? They kinda work in DRG I grant you, but DT has really good horde fights that are far superior in my opinion due to level design. Unless we want enemies coming out of solid walls of course like spiders… wait, that happens! sarcasm avoided.

Design our own maps? I think this would end up with a load of unplayed maps imho. Not that I’m saying you couldn’t do this for you and your mates - no problem with that - but I doubt many would download a public map pack. And I don’t want a level picker with a load of random custom maps on to dilute the experience so…

Well there are 2 procedurally generated maps:

  • Pure generation: This is what DRG and HD2 do, where the maps are procedurally made with very light corrections needed, this usually is used on either low graphic or in natural environment
  • Set generation: This work more like how static maps are made, with the difference of the map being made of interchangeable segments, this is the only way for high graphical games to actually do such maps as otherwise they would have a lot of graphical issues or artefacts that artists would have to find and fix.

Even Chaos Waste in VT2 doesn’t truly use Set generation, but rather having specified sub variations, which would also work in DT

Considering everything about Wh40k needs GW approval (i suppose maps art-design too) - i doubt FS can give such tool to the playerbase.

Yes, I agree here. the Random map stuff such as inverting the layout, or having the hall turn left instead of right. Maybe having to run down 2 flights of stairs instead of 3. It can still be the core map but change ever so slightly. I’ve posted before on the maps being different based on who is directing the map. For example, If its hadron she opens more doors, or its a different path, or if its marrow there is more cover scattered around, etc etc.

now that’s one point that’s really high on my wish list, right after crafting.

just look at how many maps (that far exceed the originals) have been made by fans for classic games like doom and quake. this flow of fan-made material kept these games alive since the 90s.

i bet if fatshark released modding tools for making a community map pack, they’d get flooded with maps at least as good as their own.

sure the game has a great replay value, but ffs. what takes them so much time to assemble a few maps from prefabs? didn’t they plan to release a new map every month? just imagine we had 18 more maps by now. we got 1 in 1 year instead, and not a word on a new class.

I disagree. Just large-scale the idea from archivum sycorax, the alarm section that sends you down a random path, but you end up in the same final area

FS will never be allowed to do this they are contractually bound to games workshop and have to get approval by them for everything established in their codex as far as I am aware. Its a fun concept but I cant see them ever allowing it as they have gotten a lot stricter in the recent years. I think its somewhat a good and bad thing as they tend to keep it all feeling contected at least. I just dont think map making could every happen but map destruction could

Well, Fatshark won’t allow unofficial servers AFAIK, and without player-driven servers I’m not sure that player-produced maps will ever have a home, even if you did have a map editor to make them.

But the idea is good.

Good thing there is no map codex.

That bit is one of my favourites across all levels, but the doors shutting randomly doesn’t change that fight at all?

Do you try different team tactics if the left door shuts instead of the right? I bet you don’t.

Sorry, I don’t get why that’s a good example of dynamic maps creating more “game”.

I’m not saying it’s an amazing event, I’m saying that you could do something similar in offering different paths.

Left 4 dead 2 does it, they block off one path with wreckage and you go down a different way to get to the same goal… it’s at least a nice change of scenery is all…

GW approval aside, layman friendly tools for map creation would likely be a massive endeavour for Fatshark devs. I suspect they wish they could have spent more time on developing their own internal tools, nevermind a map creation kit for the public.

They had that in Vermintide and VT2. Normal maps too, not just Chaos Wastes.
