Gamepass VS Steam Active Players

So I’ve been bashing this game on gamepass since launch, all characters maxed out on level 30 - multiplayer is a little all over the place at times. Not to totally sheet on it as there are some good games, but the number of games with bots and almost 0 players at times which begs the question, is this game worth buying on steam?

Seen some comments dating back 3-4 months ago on reddit but that was where the game was peaking at 40-50k players. According to steam charts the game is now peaking at 4k active players.

Is it worth getting the steam version? I’m looking at the imperial edition atm.

Edit: I mistakenly deleted my last post. Shout out to the community for instant replies btw

game is dying, goodbye cross-platform.

seems to me you acquired all the necessary information, to make a well informed decision already.
so what do you want us to tell you?

If you are asking about server density, here on EU side you can always get a match with 3 other players on Damnation with any modifier at any time of the day.

Worst case scenario it takes 1-3 minutes for a full squad to arrive, but that only happens in graveyard hours when there are 2 similar difficulty maps up (like double high-int specialist gauntlet).

Steam has definitely the main playerbase.
I weep for all who bought it on Gamepass. Then again, you should have known…
It’s a Microsoft service. Need I say more?
They’ve got a graveyard behind their main headquarters with all the abandon ware and failed operating systems, among them Games for Windows Live…

It’s infinitely inferior to Steam in every way. Heck, even GOG would be a better alternative for purchases.
The main draw of Gamepass was the first few free trial months when it launched. It essentially meant everyone could try pretty much every new game for free, as a full title.
Of course that was just a classic case of “Free Beer” to get people hooked into the service. Game distributors have to go into “goodwill debt” if they want to compete against the Behemoth that is Valve’s Steam.

The sub fee also isn’t big. But for community and online gaming it sucks big time. It’s really just good for trialing things.

Nobody should be buying things on there if the game is available elsewhere. It’s just not a good decision to make.

Thanks for all the replies, I indeed made the purchase and prefer the number of players on steam. Bigger difference when playing malice or above. - I just wish more people would give this game a chance. We need more numbers.

Gamepass probably wouldn’t be quite as dead if they had gotten crossplay between Gamepass and Steam out at release or shortly after, but it seems like another thing they’ve dropped the ball on, and now it’s probably too late. Oh well, they got their Microsoft money and gotten anyone who’s invested in the game to buy a copy separately.
