Frame rate capped at 60 fps

Issue Type (Required):

Performance

Issue Description (Required):

Since the game was launched my in-game FPS has always been capped at 60 fps. I just learned yesterday that it is possible to achieve 100+ fps. I tried uninstalling, optimising the game with Nvidia app, adjusting to the lowest video quality, and it was always 60fps, even though GPU and CPU usage were quite low. I have the latest graphic drive installed. I have V-Sync off and frame rate cap is unlimited. My game runs in fullscreen mode. My GPU is RTX 3080ti and my CPU is AMD R7 5800X. The game is installed in a M2 SSD. No mods are running.

[PC] Do You Use Mods? (Optional):

Yes, and I’ve tried disabling them

PC - Steam

Is a FPS cap/V-Sync active within the NVIDIA Control Panel (not only in Darktide)?:

NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings → Select Darktide → Look for ‘Max Frame Rate’ and ‘Vertical Sync’ options

Yes, it is also off. Only G-sync is enabled.

These are the settings since I got this computer. Is it possible to find a solution to this? Or is the problem so unique that only happened to me?

Might be silly questions but some more info might be helpful:

The in-game frame limiter is off right nV App didn’t re-enable it or anything? (it shouldn’t)
Your monitor’s refresh rate is capable of 100+ Hz and configured in Windows or nV stuff? nV Reflex on or off after nV App optimizer?
Are you running any other monitoring software like Afterburner that uses RTSS for data, which also can have a framerate limiter?

I’m only using Afterburner without RTSs. Frame rate limiters are all off in game. Nvidia Reflex is on. Monitor refresh rate is 170. My Vermintide 2 runs at 120+ fps.

Idk why it didn’t display the message as a reply to you, and I don’t know if you received the notification, but just in case, please check the message above

  • You didn’t really answer my question though:
is you refresh rate set for your monitor in Windows Display Settings and/or nV CPL? With Vsync forced OFF you can see higher FPS that your monitor’s actual (set) refresh rate. But you have OFF for DT so…double check anyways.
  • Double check G-Sync config:

  • Are you 100% sure you don’t have RTSS running and capping FPS only for DT (it’s installed wth it and feeds it data)? Or something similar?
  • What other software do you have in the mix? Any overlays you need to check? Any power of performance targets things of that nature?

In general you don’t need to force vsync OFF, leave it application controlled (there can be differences).
Make sure G-Sync is ON for full screen AND windowed, and nV Reflex On in-game (or maybe even global).
What are your settings in game ? Screenshots of settings or your user_settings.config file to see the other GFX settings in said file or shots.

P.S. Google fore more troubleshooting steps, need more info from you ^.

Oh so my default frame rate in Windows Display Settings was set to 60 instead of 170hz. I didn’t know this was a thing since all other games runs perfectly fine… But thank you for the detailed answer!

Their reported internal FPS ran fine, but they didn’t really fine at all as you capped the output.

This should be the first thing you change when you get an high refresh rate monitor, but is surprisingly common thing ppl forget to do.

So all good now?

Yes, it’s all good now.
I found a detailed explanation here:

Turns out darktide doesn’t have a “real” fullscreen mode so my monitor doesn’t change refresh rate automatically when the game starts

The monitor doesn’t change refresh rate automatically past the system max necessarily (these days, well the older exclusive fullscreen can bypass ), it’s set by the system, either from Windows or your GPU software.
Regardless it’s good that it’s sorted out as this is a common source for headaches, I had a hunch.

FWIW Many games don’t have the old exclusive full-screen mode an that was technically legacy tech a while back and being deprecated, even Discord dropped support for it recently for their new overlay. It will be nice to see it go forever at this point and Win 10’s demise in the fall may hasten that.
Win11 had some nice under-the hood advances (for the record I’m just a gamer and general SW dev, not a graphics dev) but people are strange whether you’re a stranger or not.

P.S. Leave V-sync to “application controlled”, don’t force it on or off globally in nV SW, other game engines (or overlays?) may have side effects from what I read in passing. G-Sync on for Fullscreen and Windowed, VSync application controlled, reflex on or ultra in-game. Reflex will do the -3 fps under max cap trick itself.
