It shows that it somehow hit a nerve.
Iâd hope to think that itâs their passion project, and in viewing it as that I can understand - whether itâs wise in such a large topic for the community however? Iâm unsure.
Still respect to the man for trying however. But at the same time I remain unimpressed by the fact that they donât funnel all player communication from their own forums as a starting point, before branching it out, while at the same time trying to invite people on Steam and Reddit to partake more actively on the forums.
That said Iâll be fair and state that I do not use Reddit and am personally very biased against the childish half-assed antics you seem to get from people on steam - hence me being so pro-Official Forums
Iâm of the same sentiment, I despise steam because of its toxic nature; hate reddit, because itâs reddit. It is very telling when they donât centralize information, or at least provide us with some insight, on their own forums.
shrug
Maybe they screwed up big time, and donât want everyone to know.
Hrm, sounds like a conspiracy theory. Itâs pretty clear that theyâre just responding where the conversations are happeningâŚ
Robinâs been fairly active in the thread made of the post he did in the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vermintide/comments/8uj6l6/fs_robin_reply_to_roadmap_post_you_can_read_the/
TFW devs more active in reddit than their own forums
Itâs not the end of the world.
I donât think itâs fair to say people arenât giving them the benefit of the doubt⌠If this was a major gaming company you would see their stocks falling over this release. But in all fairness, you can look back through my posts and see Iâve been a very vocal supporter of the majority of changes theyâve made. And Iâve backed them up on most of patch note threads. As well as trying to shut down some of the âconspiracy theoriesâ. That doesnât mean I canât criticize them, or that anyone else canât either. Theyâve maneuvered through this game release in a rather idiotic fashion. And they seem to spend most of their time trying to play catch up only to consistently fall short.
If we look at everyoneâs posts from the release until now, pretty much everyoneâs posts went from extremely positive/supportive at first to becoming gradually more negative/frustrated as their patience wore thin due to lack of timely response or new previously undetected issues being discovered or even old issues being re-introduced.
The benefit of the doubt I spoke of was related to the assumption of several posters that Robin meant anyone with concerns was a conspiracy theorist. He very plainly said that people making up nonsense, like âFatshark knowingly releasing an unrealistic roadmap to get sales and cheat us!â, are the only people he was referring to.
I was very supportive of Fatshark in the beginning. Their major hiccups have made me lose patience.
I wonder where that attitude was when they decided to release the game.
Thinking emoji indeed. Of course, do not speak of such things here, lest you be labeled a conspiracy theorist.
Iâm at a very similar point. Theyâve lost alot of their initial credit for being a small-ish development team not necessarily for screwing up their schedule, but by their very determined lack of communication, very late admission that they screwed up and quite frankly, their almost preposterous arrogance that they still show. The whole ânot the end of the worldâ meme that completely missed the point of why people asked for âcompensationâ for essentially playtesting their game for them, accusing people of âconspiracy theoriesâ recently for just pointing out the upcoming Xbox-release and the dead silence about updates coinciding, stuff like that that sometimes makes you wonder if they have anyone in their ranks with any common sense when it comes to public relations and customer communications. All these things could have easily been avoided by simply communicating.
I know itâs not completely comparable, but anyone who has followed the development of Stardew Valley, the sole developer, ConcernedApe, was also very vocal with what he was doing, apologetic when things didnât go as planned and when he postponed the initial release, stating he wasnât satisfied with the game yet, he received overwhelmingly positive feedback from people for his honesty. My point is that gamerâs have been screwed over by so many big players like EA, blatantly lied to (remember when SimCity was claimed to work only in online mode and then an evil hacker discovered only hours later that the game could run with all features working with an offline-crack?) that honesty and being upfront has become a rare sight and people will, so is my observation and experience, cut you alot more slack if you just talk to them and say: âHey, we screwed up, we took a bite too big to swallow in one gulp, but hereâs our plan for the future! Take this small token of our appreciation for sticking with us through difficult times!â
Instead, we have to link to reddit where apparently the real talk is done, at least sometimes, while the official forums remain shrouded in silence for the most part and if we get something, itâs some shirty remark on how things are not the end of the world and we really couldnât expect them to be bothered to hand out something as a sign of goodwill.
It does hold true that itâs not what you say, but how you say it.
At least Robin didnât blame GW, or use a scapegoat. He took initiative and owned up to the mistakes.
The problem is, where do we go from here. One of the biggest criticism that all communities have, reddit, official forums, and here. Is that weâre left in the dark regarding the games development.
The longer you knowingly leave your community in the dark, the more aggressive that the community will be towards you.
People canât defend Fatshark, if all they is be silent and refuse to acknowledge us. Or instead favor one platform over the other.
For a small time dev, there has been a lot of drama plaguing the game. For starters, they took down the roadmap prematurely, and never bothered updating it. Effectively leaving everyone in the dark, regarding the games development. A roadmap, in general, outlines the teams priorities, expectations, and milestones. Basically, it fleshes out a projects goals. It also informs the playerbase of timelines, and what to expect for the future. The fact they took it down says a lot. At least give us simple updates on what it is that you are working on, or plan on doing. Or how do you plan to address x y and z.
This is what the roadmap looked like before they took it down: https://i.imgur.com/uGkx9b0.jpg
We were supposed to already have dedicated servers, DLC, and new maps. Weâve yet to get any of the aforementioned items. Mod supporting proved to be very lacking. DLC is yet to be even announced. Dedicated servers, complete silence. Itâs one thing to give us vague specifics, itâs another to stay silence.
Furthermore, the company, Fatshark, has instead chosen to further increase tensions by not communicating with everyone; or instead choosing to favor one social platform over the other. What this causes instead is confusion and agitation. How hard is it to copy and paste your answers from to place to another?
Drop rates for certain items also proved to be a huge issue for the community. What I mean is that cool skins, hats, and rare items; proved to be ludicrously difficult to obtain. The community raised much concern over the months, but were met with dead silence for a while. Imagine how concerning, and problematic that is.
Finally, it takes the company forever to address alarming issues. For example, it took them months to even begin to address the scarcity of green dust. A problem that affected every player, on all difficulties.
All of these issues will continue expounding upon themselves, until the festering toxicity of the community implodes. How long until the community becomes hostile towards the devs, how long until the community becomes aother toxic cesspool of crap.
One of my favorite indie devs is Radical Fish Games, they are the devs behind crosscode. They always try to give out monthly updates on what it is that they are working on. They also centralize themselves to steam, and are very active. So you are not forced to comb through niches places to get any relevant information regarding the games development.
Itâs annoying, because Fatshark is the only dev that does not properly communicate. I mean come on, remember the whole skaven and chaos charm thing?! Fatshark is the only dev that does not give out in depth patch notes. Fatshark is the only dev that refuses to show droprates. They treat this game as if it is a mmo, when it is a CO OP game. Itâs frustrating.
However, one would be foolish to think that Fatshark will be the last dev to embark upon such foolish decisions. It just sucks, because I had so much hope for Vermintide 2.
Are roadmaps just the new early access?
Thatâs the trend right now. I am active on two other video game official forums, and both of those are the same as here where more often than not, any significant developer response to something is cross-posted from Reddit. I find it to be pretty sad, especially since official forums are usually where the more dedicated fans are, but itâs probably better from a marketing perspective for the developers to spend more time on Reddit, which gets a lot more traffic in general. This has just been happening recently, but it gets more and more noticeable as time goes on.
I never cared about the Power Vs Chaos + Skaven issue but it is a huge deal. Lots of players flushed huge amounts of dust, accumulated over hundreds of hours, down the toilet trying to roll it before the playerbase caught on and once again, FS failed to compensate the people theyâd screwed over.
Itâs not the⌠well, you know the rest
A long time? The game has been out for less than 4 months and they are fixing stuff all the time. This is more of an issue of people being entitled. A road map is not something that is set in stone, itâs something that developers use so they can show what will come next. The only thing that fatshark is guilty of is that they over estimated how quickly they would be able to reach their milestones.
Holy Sigmar! Bless this ravaged soul!
