Fatshark please balance your game

Fatshark seriously needs to put more effort into balancing their weapons and abilities, because honestly it’s insane how much content in their games just ends up being completely ignored.

I don’t know who handles weapon balance, but it feels like this part of the game gets forgotten way too often. You have all these weapons with unique designs, animations, sounds and mechanics, and then half the playerbase never touches them because they are just bad or subpar.

If a weapon has terrible damage, an awkward moveset, or another weapon does the exact same thing but better, people aren’t going to use it. It doesn’t matter how cool it looks. At that point you basically created content that exists only on paper.

This is especially frustrating because balance is what keeps these kinds of games alive long term.

People don’t usually quit the game because one specific weapon sucks. Nobody goes “damn, my knife’s kinda weak, I’m uninstalling.” They usually keep playing the same few builds because those are the only ones that feel good, eventually everything starts feeling repetitive, and then they move on.

Having more viable weapons and abilities means more reasons to keep playing. People love experimenting. They like trying stupid builds, weird combinations, different playstyles.

But they also don’t want to feel like they’re actively making the game harder for themselves just because they picked something fun.

Most players want to feel strong. Very few people are going to intentionally pick a bad weapon for hundreds of hours just because it’s different.

That’s why balancing matters so much. You already made the content. The weapons are already there. The abilities are already there. Just make them actually worth using.

Look at the Skitarii right now. Why would I use something like the autogun when the Arc Rifle exists? Why would I use that awkward as hell power sword when I can simply use the Transonic Blades or even better the knife that bleeds everything it touches? Why would I bother when there are other options that simply do their job better?

Weapons don’t all need to be equal or feel the same. That’s not what people are asking for. They just need a reason to exist.

Some weapons can be easier, some harder, some more specialized, that’s fine. But when the community spends years saying “hey, nobody uses this because it sucks” and nothing changes, that’s where it gets annoying.

Fatshark needs to look at the stuff nobody touches and actually ask why nobody touches it. Because every useless weapon is basically wasted development time. And by fixing it and bringing it up to snuff? it makes all the work you already did actually matter.

Wrong.

That’s their mistake. I can understand sticking to powerful builds if you are for example levelling Havoc, and/or your team is clearly lacking, whatever in damage or personal ability department. Outside those situations you should not be afraid to pick a weapon, build something sensible around it and just have fun. This is the only sane way to play the game if you want to extend its replayability.

The only mistake Fatshark made here is allow certain weapons/blitzes/talents/abilities to say in their OP state for so long. This just makes pub Andys consider those picks as the baseline power level, around which everything else should be rebalanced. When in fact those OP picks should be brought down a notch or two, before Fatshark even attempts any further balancing adjustments.

How it feels when the skitarii power sword finally clicks for you:

some people r likely gonna say that if u r running strong weapons for fun, then u r cheating. if a player aint running most matches with weak weapons, they should be considered as metabd user n thats cheating.

some weapons in this game r trash n i cant even see players using them in auric. most players r casual players n they just want to have a relaxing match after a day of work. its no strange they turn to use stronger weapons. weapons like shredder autopistol n infantry lasgun r just meaningless n fs never buffs them

I had a similar initial reaction to Skit power sword when I first tried it. It felt awkward. I put it down for 1 mission, came back and doubled down on it. It’s one of the few weapons you actually advised to read the “manual” for. I totally missed you can hold heavy attacks on it, an the horde clear combo felt weird, especially when trying to weave in a powered attack into it.

I can only thank whoever came up with it at Fatshark for introducing something which isn’t extremely simplistic. I like weapons with depth.

The marks are fine as long as they don’t go silly with trapping supercharged versions of their moves to one version. There’s actually a few where I prefer the one that is statistically worse by a minor element just from how it feels.

And yes Skit power sword is great just needs the power button finesse scaling fixed. That H3 is supposed to hit a little harder than an Mk6 push stab on full charge +6 charges crit headshot.

it’s so enchanting to finally have a weapon that’s more than light or heavy spam.
for god sake, you start your mobbing with a push attack? clearly, this is beyond rocket science and requires a PHD and the guy who made it should be fired.

hey what’s this weapon?

and that is why malice exists :man_shrugging:

Which is fair, but not everyone is the same or has the same preferences. I have played H40 with relic blade Mk X a lot, but also Crusher, chainaxes, evis, the basic shock mauls, Obscurus on melee psyker setup, Mk II bully club, Rippers Mk II and VI, basic shotguns. Making less utilised weapons work is part of the fun. Not everything has to be relic blade or FGS power level.

People just hurt their own game experience a lot when they blindly follow what “social media” tells them. You will struggle to even find people using relic blade Mk X, because Mk II is marginally better and is considered the “meta” pick from those two.

Set yourself a mini “challenge”. Pick up a weapon, consider how to build it and how to build your class around it, and give it a chance. A totally new experience.

why slander the shredder of all things? that thing sodding slaps. you can just smack it into any zealot, arbities, hive scum, crit psyker build and be havoc viable for when you wanna get an awkward zoning special wave or trade shots with gunners.
hell, shredder’s my go-to weapon on despeardo hive scum and you can frankly pump so much damage at such a high ROF at high distances and do double what everyone else does while standing behind them. you don’t even need to aim for the head like on helbore to do well, just shoot vaugely near where they’re at and you destory anything that isn’t a crusher.

My beloved…

If this were remotely true, people would realize just how many weapons in this game are really good. Tac axe 7 is objectively one of the best melee weapons in the game; how many people do you see playing it?

First rule of weapon experimentation is: Preferably do not play with the broken AoE spam ranged builds on your team, the obvious one is inferno/smite/shriek psyker, PBB Ogryn, Desperado / BB Hive Scum, Arc rifle Skit etc. Those builds promote usage of “one shot” setups, otherwise damage over time effects, and cheap “Press X to win” options like Boom Bringer will make you feel like you aren’t doing a lot of damage.

Not a great environment to test new things. Fatshark class and weapons class designers have some good ideas, those are not on that list.

Me when I feel like playing melee Obscurus SG psy, and someone asks me to play inferno bubble instead:

̶D̶r̶i̶n̶k̶ Play responsibly.

But then reworking these weapons is also a wasted dev time that could be spent working on new features - you have to have several developers get together to discuss changes to a certain weapon - which first have to probably go through some decision-driven process so that is allowed to happen in the first place - and have them work a number of hours on tweaking numbers, changing how its attack patterns are designed, etc.

It’s a lot of work. And it’s just for one weapon - imagine working on all the outliers the game has like that.

For the record, I don’t reckon any weapon in the game is rendered useless by something else. If anything, weapons that perform “objectively” worse than the most popular choices are great challenge material and people that chase that kind of gameplay have things to have fun with. And even then there’s weapons with specialized niches like Shock mauls having access to Skullcrusher universally across all human-adjacent classes, and Skullcrusher is an insanely good debuff to have in any team comp.

Most people will gravitate towards builds that are either popular in the community, or the most straightforward ones to play/win with - it’s normal, and shaking these builds up a bit with balance changes should also happen.

I don’t know - maybe because it’s fun to do that? If you only care about winning, then you will not get this perspective.

At this point there are very few melee weapons in the game I would consider “useless” or severely underperforming. There are some ranged weapons which are difficult to defend, but that’s because they were left in the era when Darktide was a totally different game. Even then they made little sense, such as ranged weapons designed for horde clear. Few of those have some niche usage today, as utility sticks.

Sometimes I get the feeling that a lot of players believe that if a weapon isn’t good in every aspect, it must be poorly balanced.

Devil’s Claw is a good example of this. In my opinion, on a scale of 1 to 5, it’s a solid 4. But just because it hits its limits against Carapace Armor (except for the counterattack), I hardly ever see it played in public games.

And since there are usually four players, there’s likely to be a kill-obsessed player who’ll jump on the Crusher.

i never seen people using ironhelm ngl
never ever

Skit power sword is the newest melee litmus test in the game.

This weapon has been made giga obsolete by relic blades that do the exact same thing but better.

I wonder how many ppl remember the tech for the strikedown charged attack: special > push > heavy
