Enemy audio cues dont often play, or play fully, with some high threat enemies like disablers or elites its far more noticeable. The issue seems to be more prevalent in busy environments, but also happens where nothing happens on the screen, yet you can run into a silent trapper passing you by to target a team mate. Geometry, such as walls seem to also play a role, especially with bursters, giving a wrong impression they are further away then they actually are. In some cases it is possible that the AI director spawns enemies so close to players that the audio cue has no time to play.
Enemy waves of mutants, hounds and pox bursters impact the issue negatively, especially mutants and bursters, as they flood the audioscape with their audio cues. One of the reasons why I think “difficulty” modifiers based on spamming waves of those enemy types aren’t particularly fun.
