Does Gunlugger even work?

Build:

As I’ve still got loads of penances to do on the Ogryn, I thought I’d try the heavy machine gun build.

Does this even work?

Things I hate(d)

  1. On activating your special, the whole screen goes red and you can’t see anything >5metres that isn’t ‘spotted’. Who thought that added anything to the game? I’m going to go get a mod to change that.
  2. Your ammo goes really very fast. Even with the +25% node and hunting around, I found I was melee’ing for lengthy periods at a time even in Tier 4^s.
  3. Your melee options become awful. No regen, no damage bonuses. If you’re not firing, you’re a second rate citizen. See point 2.
  4. No get out of jail card. If you’re used to the charge ability instead, then running dry on bullets with Barrage leaves you no-where to go.

Anyone like this right tree build?

why would you run no toughness regens at the top? ogryn has the best compression of those nodes even if its still just heavy attacks. 3 points to never die is a lot better than the 4-5+ others have to spend. heavyweight is one of the best nodes in the game so I don’t count it as a loss. of course you are going to run into massive survival issues only relying on coherency regen and whenever you are in point blank barrage and actively shooting. never do this as anyone, especially those veteran loadouts that only run like confirmed kill on the way down.

everything around ‘burst limiter override’ is trash except for the cooldown, which is more niche than anything considering all the cooldown and most use of your gun should be taking down lines of elites. this is also why you shouldn’t really run out of ammo at all, because the achlys gets like 350 ammo back from a large bag. In those 350 rounds you will kill untold numbers of elites with the single exception of crushers if you use light em up. don’t even use the machine gun when the ult isn’t avaliable, that is the secret. only use the ult to reload to full and waste a bunch of elites or specialists if its a mod with enough of them. I don’t even run BLO, but it can give you some more cooldown shooting bosses in monstrous specials.

I don’t run it mostly because its boring and you miss out on melee bleeds, which are a large part of your melee damage. I usually end up running heavy hitter anyway because that tree is the most powerful by far. the other issue being how its good on like 3 guns (but kickback gunlugger can’t really kill bosses, which is the entire reason behind this loadout imo).

Honestly this build looks terrible.

:person_shrugging:
Copied it from a recommendation. Changed it from the above since as it’s just poop.

And I just don’t like gunlugger style of play tbh. Only doing to check off some penances. Much prefer the melee left side.

Gunlugger does work.

Try this^

Ta. I’ll give that a go. Thanks for the advice; I’ll be kind and say maybe the build I found was not current game. God, it was awful.

Please note that the Achlys is an important part of this build. Any general purpose melee weapon will work though. Please use whatever you’re comfortable with.

while it “works” it feels far to static for my taste.

if situations unfold the right way or your team is up to snuff, you can deal out serious damage with it.

it’s just that left tree with a little from the middle and big boom sprinkled in serves as a far more consistent and versatile way.

gunlugger i made work while those penances needed doing.

but far more often i was merely reacting than shaping an engagement or entire match.

Egads, @1cake and @Jonboy , stay away from the bottom right side of the tree, those points will get you better stuff elsewhere.

You’re 1 point from bruiser, that’s mandatory for CDR.
You end up with a bottom half similar to, and can move a few top nodes around to suit your needs.

Achlys+Fire is where it’s at, you can skip some toughness replenishing nodes with confident strike for gunlugger.
Remember to crouch shoot distant target with Achlyss, accuracy gain is good.
Fire can stack to 31 on lugger, melts bosses and mixed stuff. Keep a red stimm on you for more bossing and high threat situations. In mixed hordes, target the weakest elite first to seed Dominate 10% rending.

P.S. Upon additional testing, def burn over rending. The vet ammo nerf aura hurts the gunlugger a lot, ammo can be an issue. Bring a good horde and versatile melee, Mk5 shovel or Karl pickaxe.

I made this from memory but I think it’s right:

By no means an oggy expert but I have unhealthy insane hours in the game and settled for this idk, half a year ago or so. And to date it’s still the best ranged oggy build I have, iirc I used it to do the ranged penances. I remember some penance required proccing some of those talents tons of times so I think I went with Achlys for that, but otherwise the same build more or less. Sorry that this doesn’t directly answer your question but I hope it can give some ideas I guess?

Now ofc. we have pickaxes, and Branx really makes for some interesting hybrids. But a Shovel V like this is more than enough for mixed hordes with its heavy headshot cleaves. Special → heavies ofc take care of biggies like crushers, and you can do stuff like slide → special → light / push-attack to close distances and instantly put down something in particular.

The meat of the build is in Ripper V. The thing has fantastic range with those short bursts, and while the crits seem odd for an oggy it all plays into how the weapon is used. Brace → magdump 50% of your mag → tap ult while still shooting → finish the whole mag in one go → reload & you still have time for 1 more mag with the ult if you want. This way you’ll cap Blaze Away, Cavalcade & ofc. talents by the time you tap into the ult, so you have everything stacked for 2 full mags with the ult active for that max dmg.

It doesn’t do much against shielding bulwarks or crushers, but it will absolutely lane entire hallways or fields of everything else including doing a crazy amount of boss dmg if you’re close enough. Light 'em Up can reach the global cap of 31 (iirc) burn, and Rippers have a really nice spread and a ton of cleave. Between those, that Blaze Away powering the shots and the burns, and a steady supply of crits, it’s basically another nuke.

It plays as mostly melee ofc, but that ult really is glorious when it counts and with those T5+ specialist+ packs usually recharges almost instantly on account of all the kills you get.

No. As others have said that is a disgustingly **** build.

Just use confident strike to solve the toughness issue. If you have good weapons then lacking bleeds shouldn’t be a crippling issue.

That’s what frab bomb is for.

Kinda sorta. PPB is undeniably really strong. It’s really just that ogryn’s ranged talents tend towards the crappy and the ammo economy can be obnoxious.

Here’s a general skeleton of what I’d suggest for penance grinding.

Other points can be spent to taste. Lots of the talent choices are bad, but you need them to get down to lucky bullet if you care about that terrible penance.

Weapon wise I suggest sticking to a good cleaver. Confident strike removes the need to spend points on toughness if you don’t want to and they are ogryn’s most mobile melee weapons.

For guns stick to the heavy stubbers so you can get through the ****ing lucky bullet penance faster. For best results try to get blaze away & inspiring barrage. I like the gorgonum because it can actually kill things without using PBB, but some crazy people like the ****ing peashooter achlys; which might get you through with the damn penances faster. Just remember that the achlys can’t hit the broad side of a barn ft if you aren’t both perfectly still and crouched.

If you want to actually enjoy playing the video game here’s my actual stubber build.

I know that Override is not great, I only use it to never ever press R. Feel no Pain is very strong, would recommend.

Burst limiter seems to be extremely bad, some people report that it has a (very) short cooldown so you can’t get max value from stubbers, and you have to take a bunch of kinda meh nodes to reach it

Try this:

Works fine at T5 auric mael.

Uh…that’s at least 60% not a great build.

I never said it was great, I said it works at T5 auric mael.

Gunner ogryn is so damn boring, all I wanted to do was grind through the penances and never touch it again.

If they ever make the Strongest! keystone modifier give back more then one stack of Feel no Pain per push, then it would be. It still is a keystone that the more hectic a situation is the more likely you are to lose stacks, which is somewhat counterproductive since it is in these situations where you need high number of stacks of FnP the most.

People still claimed it was very strong when this was a thing.

Fixed an issue where stacks of the keystone talent ‘Feel No Pain’ would be removed incorrectly also when successfully blocking an attack, or when hit by friendly fire.

Kinda wish there was a mod that could keep track of the average uptime for certain buffs to see the overall added value. With all of that said, I’d still use FnP over BLO for gunlugger, even if they won’t give more stacks for Strongest!.

There it is. Just run gunlugger for penances and then back to glorious melee Ogryn.

that´s what i did.

melee ogryn might feel so satisfying because it reminds me of a “reverse doom 2”

like

when using the kickback.

even the pacing reminds my of the way i moved 30 years ago.

good times then, good times now

I’ll check this one out, thanks.
