Do you play with mods?

I’m a classic fps player, too, my first FPS was Wolfenstein 3D. My first computer games were on the Apple 2.

I recall well the outline map Doom had! But I was specifically talking about a minimap radar, AKA the little circle that a lot of older, if not as old as Doom, FPS games had.

:+1:
i was just referring to minimaps coming “much” later than “old school” :joy:

yep wolfenstein, in my case on a 486 and a botched copy of spear of destiny with the last bossfight crashing.
anti-climax would be an understatement

hmmm lets see… minimap…
mortal coil from 95 and last rites from 96 would be the earliest i remember, both rather obscure games and not exactly known for their “quality” :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Hey man, at this point people are calling games from the 2010s “classics”. XD Old-school nowadays is 2000s! 80s and 90s games are basically fossils . . .

LOL Imagine the old Doom-style line overlay maps in DT! That’d actually be kinda cool.

well lets say most of the younger generation would have a hard time in mid 90s online play or lan party environment :joy:
whats called “toxic” today would have either been laughed at, ignored or, if truly bothersome, answered with a good right hook and both parties went on playing after without much thought to it :man_shrugging:

fossilized i might be, this dinosaur still has a pointy tail that whips around fast  still got my gzdoom, eduke32 and epsilon quake at the ready when the mood strikes me.

im not against a minimap in darktide mind you, i just doubt that people in need of would be fast enough to read, digest and act upon while the game continues around them.

personally you could wake me up at 3a.m show me a screenshot of a map and id draw it either forward or back :squinting_face_with_tongue:

besides, forget your “first time” in the 90s, you werent a man until youve beaten battletoads :joy:

Can’t believe that there’s so many posts arguing about mods in this game.

Without mods this game is horrible, lacking most basic features that were present in previous fatshark game, like hub hotkeys, ping, ability to do bind 2 keys for same action.

After playing vermintide 2 not to mention many other’s games, i realise just how bad darktide is without mods and i would drop it permanently if they got removed.

Dude, I sucked so bad at side-scrollers. XD Wolfenstein 3D I blew through, but those NES games . . .

A THAGOMIZER*

*named for the late Thag Simmons

mmmm no not really, if we assume all audio queues are working properly, it simply adds a visual indicator of where the audio is coming from, you can hear the audio coming from behind you, and guess what, theres a visual marker showing that its behind you! wow thats so much more information than what the game gives you its a cheat its awful how can anyone download this mod its terrible

audio queues, thats how the mod works, takes existing audio queues from the game, makes a visual indicator on screen, and thats it, thats the mod. it shows multiple notifications because enemies have multiple audio queues and they can happen at the same time? like im not 100% sure about that, im no modder, if you want to know more about the mod you could go ask the mod creator themself, im sure they know how the mod works and might answer questions about it

how?

nah dude, some games were beyond masochistic.
guess it was standard back then cause if we are honest, they were beyond short in terms of content.

short example:
bought splatterhouse 3 for the genesis under the table for approx. 200$ (given exchange value and time, guess that was 94?)
game was banned around here so a must for the collection.
anyways, went home proud that i fked the bpjs good and was about to enjoy gory goodness…
3 hours later i called the dude that sold me the game and asked :“uhm…im “through”… thats it?!?”

the answer was hilarious as he hadn’t played it himself but couldn’t come clean that the horribly expensive game was supposed to be that short :joy:
“dont worry theres more houses, you need to look for another level”

i aint even mad at him, stuff like that made my 90s and i remember it like yesterday after 32 years

The original Megaman was a good right of passage :grimacing:

I remember in my teens, a friend had their old NES out when I visited, with the original Super Mario Bros. I got so excited. “I grew up playing that!”

I get the controller, fall into the first hole. He’s just staring at me, so I add; “I never said I was any good.”

Yep! All games were hard as nails

Bionic commando, Ghouls N Ghosts, golden axe, turtles in time, dizzy egg, smash TV, Megaman all get special mentions in that respect lol

What audio cue did the tripper make?

imagine, today, sending people through elden ring, have them beat the final boss without dying once all the way only to be told :“well, half time’s over, do it all again”

i loved and hated ghouls n ghosts for that
tremendous atmosphere, genious art style and every map/boss unique and you knew… you fking knew if you made it through all that… you were back at square 1 for round 2 :raised_fist:

copyImage

anyone remember

?

ps/fun fact

i literally beat super mario on the gameboy the first time when sitting on the :toilet:

Super Mario Land? Those ones were so weird, but fun.

I don’t remember Two Crude Dudes, but I remember BAD DUDES on the NES!

@MadMartigan Dude, I remember Golden Axe! I beat that at a friend’s house.

You can use PowerDI to see the build of players you met in missions.
Main reason why I switched from scoreboard to powerDI.

I have fond memories of playing Goldeneye and Mariokart with high school friends. We even did this dumb thing of using two pieces of cardboard in cross interlock stuck to a CRT TV to prevent eachother screen sniping.

Two players would sit on chairs as elevation and bottom quadrant players sit on floor with their heads supporting horizontal part of card board.

Of course since it was held by cheap sellotape with a bit of excitement and falling over eachother whole thing would fall apart

And double dragon! So many brutal games but yeah ghouls N Ghosts was a special twisted one haha.

Mario land 2 was pretty spicy too. And totally random.

Zool and dizzy egg on the Amiga. And Cannon Fodder! Where it rubbed it in by adding all your dead soldiers to the graveyard that your new soldiers had to queue past :grimacing:

Well, I finally was able to get what I wanted by using the opacity settings (thanks for telling me about it because I essentially had zero idea it existed until you mentioned it). Now I have things like health and every UI element other than the stamina bar almost invisible, to the point where if I focus on anything else other than that UI element, I practically don’t see it. And, of course, I can tag enemies, so it’s a definitive win for me.

Shoutout to Fracticality, the Custom HUD mod creator! Thanks to you, I can finally play Darktide my way.

ah ah uh uh ow ow… as i was shooting them across the map :joy:

glad i could help, enjoy a cleaner ui

Modding can lead you to some strange places.
