Coward Culling does not work

Here is yet another non-functioning thing in Darktide.

Since there is a penance for activating Coward Culling, it is very easy to see that it does not, in fact, work.

Coward Culling is incapable of being triggered against Damnation enemies 99% of the time. This includes trash mobs. They are simply immune to suppression, which means Coward Culling cannot, and will not ever, trigger.

On Heresy the enemies are immune to suppression roughly 85% of the time, including trash mobs, meaning Coward Culling is sometimes active.

In other other words you need to give Ogryn enormous amounts more suppression, or you have tuned suppression wrong for all enemies.

In fact, even on Malice you might kill a hundred enemies and Coward Culling might trigger on ONE of them. The aura is a lie.

IIRC only ranged enemies and groaners can be suppressed, everybody else is immune. Shotgunners don’t count as ranged though :^)

I had no trouble finishing this penance. You can go into the meatgrinder and shoot your stubber at a Reaper and watch them take more damage as soon as they go into their suppression animation, so the aura works as intended as far as I can tell.

But yes, as mentioned above melee enemies cannot be suppressed.

That makes the aura even dumber, in that case. The entire game seems balanced around shooting melee enemies, and meleeing shooter enemies. Intentionally or not.

Giving an aura with only bonus damage to ranged enemies seems… Less than ideal. Especially once you consider that viable suppression weapons for Ogryn (which is really only Stubbers) don’t function at range. You know, the range you’d wanna shoot shooters at. If you’re close enough for a Stubber, you’re basically close enough to melee them.

my only gripe with the penance, the only one left for my oggy as well, is that it forces me to do stupid stuff i wouldn’t do normally, aka charing into the biggest cluster like a madman an get as many procced as possible.

it doesn’t help that i only play auric maelstrom out of habbit and a penance would additionally become a boring chore instead of just a chore, but my shame performing this way is real :flushed:

The Achlys stubber has a lot of spread reduction while braced, crouched and stationary these days. So you can use it effectively at range, especially with Burn stacks from PBB.

Anyway just use your stubber or ripper to demolish shooter patrols and gunner squads and you’ll get the penance done in no time.

take the extra suppression node its a massive help.
I was doing a full gunlugger build and I progressed fine on that penance but the second I changed keystones I stopped progressing why? no suppression node without it you kill stuff way faster than you hit the suppression limit

Well there’s no way to NOT take it if you’re going down the gunlugger tree to burst limiter, but yeah.

This is not, what was mentioned above.
The guy above mentioned, that groaners can also be suppressed. Groaners are melee enemies.

How fast you complete the penance via your own suppression, depends on the weapon you use and how you use it.
Groaner hordes (see image above) can give you a lot of progress towards this penance. They are not suppression immune, even on damnation.
Although i guess, if you just 1 shot them from some distance, they won’t be suppressed at the time of death.

With a purgatus psyker on the team, this penance can be completed in no time.
Due to the nature of how the purgatus staff deals damage (short range and damage over time), it is quite likely that any enemy that can be suppressed, is suppressed at the time of death.

In case you want some help with the penance, i hereby offer some of my purgatus spamming time to you.

I may take you up on that! Right now the most boring race on the F1 calendar is happening, so obviously I have to watch that. 4 cars totaled already, so maybe it won’t be so boring after all :person_shrugging:

Can confirm. I did it pretty quickly with an Achlys as well. However I also fired full force into every horde like @Flawless suggested.
You’ll be a bullet pissing menace to the rest of the team, but so long you warn them beforehand most people are pretty understanding

hence my shame, still all but 1 “special” team mate were even supportive and profited from the ensuing carnage.

yet you need your team actively have your back, someting not necessary for me running melee/kickback where i’m the safety net most of the time.

You mostly just have to go out of your way to magdump shooters like a monkey and it works, least thats how I did it.
Now that I think about it I think that a lot of Veteran concerns that survivalist is no longer viable probably has to do with people doing penances in their lobbies lol. I just yoinked 25 ammo pickups every game when I was doing the ogryn ones, and putting ammo kits in hidden corners so I can quadruple dip

Can these attributes maybe be applied to the Krourk at some point? I’m pretty sure my Ogryn would be more accurate throwing the bullets than shooting them.

Ah it depends. After extensive kickback use it feels way less stationary but you get used to it quickly. And learn to watch your positioning more. It also helps to use the Achlys as it gets ready much quicker. I personally prefere it to kickback now. It’s a fun play style that reminds me of run and gun vet

for me its the other way round, kickback is my doom 2 boomstick, sliding through the heretics bonking and shooting.

alas penance is done and stubber back in the lootcrate to collect dust

felt soooo good having 2 “normal” matches again being my old clubbering self again, the difference is staggering when i watch them back to back.

but it’s always good to have complementary playstyles :+1:

It does work, only certain enemy types can get suppressed. Trash shooters, groaners and elite gunners (except shotgunners) can get suppressed.

Also I would give Ceaseless Barrage blessing a try for quicker suppression build up and extra damage vs suppressed enemies.

Yeah, I never understood why only Achyls benefited from those buffs, but then too accurate Stubbers would make gun lugger builds even more OP.

Not sure if it’s as simple as ranged (plus groaners) count, and melee doesn’t. I can kill dozens of shooters and the tally won’t increase at all. Guess they weren’t suppressed before they died?

Then suddenly the tally can increase after not killing ranged nor groaners. It’s… odd.

Edit: Yeah, no, it’s just fully broken. I had like 3500 kills before starting this, but after actually trying to get it, I am lucky to get 20-50 per mission. It’s not counting the kills, or things aren’t being suppressed despite all evidence to the contrary.

Dunno if a hotfix broke it or whatever, but it’s just not functioning in any way that is sensible.
