Considerations with All the Abhuman Requests

Many members of the Darktide community have long been asking for more Abhumans, mainly in the forms of Classes. I can see that however being a bridge too far for Fatshark because most Abhumans when broken down are just (insert current class but a few changes)

Examples are that Ratlings are just Veterans but more gun, Beastman simply being Zealot/Arbites because of a horn-rush ability would just be the Arbites Break the Line ability, and Felinids are just Veterans but with hairballs. Reason why its mostly Veteran stuff is because Abhumans rarely if ever are found in any real service outside of his holy guard, because meat is meat at the end of the day.

This is where I have a loonie to put into the wring, if you would consider.

Simply make the abhumans a form of character appearance and personality combo. Think of it like the Cadian personality having the Cadian Eyes, but more ‘extreme’?

A great example would be Felinids being a Veteran Character appearance locked behind a singular personality choice. Cat people after all are just humans with cat-like problems. That being hairballs, poor heat insulation, and sensitive hearing. Meaning all of this can be implemented into a personality choice with their respective dialogues, backgrounds (as in dialogue lines), and quips.

Beastman could very well be the same, though considering in lore Beastman are Zealously focused on proving their worth to his holy name, God Emperor of Mankind, a Zealot choice wouldn’t be too far off as a redeemer background, think Pyskers with all those Zealot-style cosmetics but instead of cosmetics its personality background.

Ratlings just… can’t. Simply because of how the map is designed a man/woman so short that he cannot look over a barrel would not only be difficult to play but would likely require overhauling of the base human form far more then the other two, meaning in terms of time investment its just, not really worth it for Fatshark especially with their goal/potentialhardcap of 8 classes.

Now I can see one big point of contention for Beastman and Felinids… The Internet (Furries and such). The big reason GW has kept the Cat-folk at a Commissars Gun-point is because of the fact that it can either go really good, or utter crap. Simply because of the human-to-animal scale. A compromise could be Izutsumi from Delicious in Dungeon but given that good old 40k depression. Meaning instead of that bright and cheerful anime styling, your looking at a 20 year old who has aged 60 years and chain smokes like my Yamaha on a Cold Winter Night. So… think furry person but still a normal face.

Beastman though would be tricky simply because of Helmets, how do you put big horns on the character without clipping. Probably have to be a compromise with only face attachments like Rebreathers.

Now if all of you are in the loop of the content creator teasers you can see where I come from. I will not continue further there for the sake of the rightful and blessed among of who wear his holy cloth upon their eyes.

This has been my yap.

To be honest, that wasn’t an issue for Hive Scum. The real reason they likely won’t do more abhumans are

  1. they stated they don’t want to do different player heights anymore, which excludes ratlings and squats
  2. they probably don’t want to make fully unique skeletons and animations for a new class

I always like to be pleasantly surprised but I’m not seeing anything but standard humans in the future

There are 3 types of Abhuman:

  • Footnotes: Those are Abhuman that have 1 or 2 sources, and are for the most part just meant to reference things without really being meant to matter in the bigger scope of the setting
    • Felinid
    • Pelager
    • Longshank
    • Troth
  • Kitbash: Abhuman that have certain rules and miniature kitbashes in the White Dwarf magazine, but are basically just played as Guardsmen with a special twist
    • Nightsiders
    • Afriel Strain
  • Miniature Abhumans: The Abhuman that actually matter for most of the setting:
    • Blanks
    • Psykers
    • Navigator
    • Ogryn
    • Ratling
    • Squat
    • Goliath (restricted to Munda though)

Suggesting Felinids as a cosmetics is very much not gonna happen cause GW doesn’t seem to want to mention Felinids any further than it being an Easter egg toward the Thundercats.

Having Beastmen with the weapons thst are currently allowed on many of the class (though maybe not the Scum) would probably also be barred by GW.

As having the Beastmen, Ratling or Squat be a new class, Ratling has 0 chances, not adapted for a Tide and small PoV for a ranged focus character, Squat has the PoV issues too, but slightly less, and is quite adapted for a Tide.

And the Beastmen has no real issues except finding what kind of weapons they can bring, as not many arts or miniatures exist of them currently (Gor Half-horn, with a Plasma Pistol and a Chain Sword, and the Fellgor ravager)

In the end, Abhuman aren’t really going to be able to offer the most compared to stuff that is most often proposed. But of the Abhuman, it would pretty much only be possible to see Beastmen, and Squat if they manage to mitigate the problem for the maps.

Considering what I was mentioning was ZERO new classes but cosmetic only, yes
