Commemorative Award for Rations Event

Oh I’ve seen a lot of disappointment in twitter, discord and reddit about get a frame again, many people was expecting for some aquilas or cosmetics.

why are you complaining about a free to view thread?

They do it once for skulls and now every demands it for every event they run.

Not just Reddit. YouTube as well.

And where’s the problem there? Folks who’ve been playing for long enough have such an abundance of crafting mats that they’ll never want for more, and the individual cosmetic frames/key fobbles are a crapshoot as to whether or not they’ll appeal - Why wouldn’t we want Aquilas.

Hell maybe if we had more opportunity to earn them in events or other aspects of gameplay, people would be more incentivized to engage with the shop more or maybe even buy some Aquilas that they otherwise wouldn’t now that they can earn some themselves.

It’s a fun theory, but we don’t know if this is true.

If the aquilas given out at Skulls had a positive effect on sales and/or player sentiment, I bet we’ll see more Aquila events. My guess is still twice a year: skulls & winter holidays. But we’ll see. Might have just been a wash though, we don’t know.

Someone here posted a cool video by highly successful game director chris wilson here a while ago.

Most of it is fairly relevant to Darktide, but what especially makes me feel nostalgic and appreciate good design is reflected in his personal stance where he says: “If your game is genuinely fun and players want to play it because it’s fun, you don’t need these [retention, dark design] mechanics.” He also says it feels bad and disgusting to him that companies now design their games around these things, and how when he grew up devs only cared about making a fun game to please players, rather than hiring psychologists to maximize profits. Keep in mind game dev was already a for profit endeavor back then.

Now I know it is what it is, and what can you do, but it’s still actually kind of sad to read “why arent these things cool and interesting instead” and the answer is “money” because I too feel like Chris Wilson

Except no one said that? Starting to sense a pattern here…

Wait so for what reason are they handing out frames nobody really cares much about rather than involving Aquilas in the event design, which is what the majority of the playerbase would have more fun with?

Does htis not imply it’s about the money?

And even if it’s not what you meant, I was quoting Fatshark, and not you or anyone else in this thread, it just sparked the thought. We all know they’re keeping things like the FOMO store and withhold earnable/event aquilas for financial reasons. I’m just sad that this is how video games work nowadays. They were always an industry, but the business models affect the product more nowadays.

Here are a couple of potential reasons that aren’t “qq I miss when capitalism was nice and passionate” (lol):

  1. Most people don’t care, flat out. Couldn’t even get a record number of players when they gave out free Aquilas for the first time ever during one of the biggest media blitzes since launch.

  2. As soon as FS starts offering better rewards for time-gated content, the FOMO complaints will start up. It’s a valid complaint imo, and a needle that is always being threaded.

It’s less that a frame was the reward. But that they designed and coded this community event and built up this hype for a “unique reward based on the player’s choices!” and it’s a frame. They could have done a universal skin, or released set of themed weapon skins, but they went with the “here’s a frame.” path, which, in a Vermintide 2 event, is a participation trophy with weapon skins as the community reward.

Just continues to hammer home how little Fatshark cares lol

Why not do it for the peopel who do care?

Why not make it a different system that isn’t time limited events?

Again, not quoting you, and I said before I’m quoting Fatshark but it’s more like I’m quoting the unspoken reality behind it.
And yes, games used to be way less capitalistic. I don’t know why you have to be dismissive and condescending about that. I don’t remember ever thinking “wow this business model really messes this game up” up until a certain point in the industry. Chris Wilson agrees, and I tend to place a lot of stake in his opinions on this matter since ARPGs especially are really sensitive about this type of thing.

Where is this quote?

Keep reading that sentence, I retracted that statement. Take a deep breath, I’m not trying to fight you.

Ok.

Is there something about that you were asking about still or why are you replying at this point? Genuinely not sure. I’m not trying to quarrel, you honestly misunderstood something.

The event was good, that’s what matters the most. But yes, cool reward would be nice like a weapon skin even if just for Ogryn, but people behind cosmetic monetezation in this game have no soul so I don’t expect it. One premium set costs almost 3k, and they’re afraid to give out some aquilas so after one year of playing people could buy one full set. It’s also a paid game with now 2 paid classes per year.

I love this game, and I buy premium cosmetics every 3-4 months or so when there’s something I like in the store (most sets are ugly as sin though). But the greed is absolutely real. If they won’t add new stuff to penance track next update, that gonna make me upset more than those event portaits.

I’m numb to those ugly portrait frames at this point. This portrait is just another grey/brown mess that doesn’t even look all that unique and is barely recognizable. At least event with Plasma Gunners and event with exploding enemies had neat looking frames/insignias.
