In this screenshot, notice that Kerillian is talking to Kruber, who is tied up and nowhere nearby. I’ve also noticed this in other instances, including banter in the keep, where a character will start banter with another character who is not currently in the keep.

Saltzpyre still calls a Kruber who heals him a dwarf. Less often now, but it still happens. Characters also start talking to a character if they were in a game at all: eg. if a Kerillian bot goes away and is replaced with a different character, occasionally another character will try to talk to Kerillian. This is most obvious with keep conversations.
