Hi all,
We’re aware more and more players are experiencing GPU-related crashes ONLY when using DirectX 12, and we desperately need your help as replicating the issues on our end is not proving to be easy!
If we’ve spoken in the past and determined that your crashes are specific to DirectX 12, we would really appreciate your cooperation by enabling what we call the D3D Debug and Validation Layer, playing as you normally would (or attempting to replicate the issue if the crashes are caused by a specific action, such as switching to Full Screen mode), and then providing us with the associated crash report.
To do this…
Firstly, switch back to DirectX 12 using the launcher’s ‘Settings’ menu.
- Navigate to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer Vermintide 2\bundle
- Right-click settings.ini and open with Notepad or similar
- Locate the lines:
d3d_debug = false
d3d_gpu_validation = false
- Change false to true
- Save the changes
- Launch Vermintide 2 and attempt to replicate the issue
- Once the crash occurs, provide us with the corresponding crash report by pasting it in the comments below, or via PM or Discord - Julia#7445
- Revert the changes made originally by repeating steps 1 - 3 and changing the true back to false. This is important, as leaving it enabled may have a negative impact on your performance
We understand it’s a lot of hassle but we’re keen to identify the cause of these crashes and hope to make it possible for you to play using DirectX 12 again.
Again, this is only for players experiencing crashes specifically on DirectX 12.

I crashed immediately on launch after switching to DX12, and editing my settings.ini as requested to enable debugging beforehand.

I just switched back to DX11 and it crashes on launch as well. Now I don’t know if this is due to latest update or not, since I hadn’t launched the game before switching to DX12 after the update which contained changes to VT2 Launcher with survey info.
I’m running a Steam validation of local files to see if it fixes anything first, then I’ll undo the settings.ini if the validation doesn’t help and try it again.
Update: file validation reverted the settings.ini change, I rolled back to DX11, and was able to get the game to load as usual. So it’s not something that was due to update. Switching to DX12 in borderless fullscreen I was able to start the game (before making settings.ini debug changes) and it loaded up ok. Switching to fullscreen crashes though (seems like it’s being reported by others too).
I can’t even get the game to launch with the settings.ini changes:
d3d_debug = true
d3d_gpu_validation = true
It crashes out immediately for either DX11 or DX12 selected. Is there something I’m missing?

Thank you @Jageral! So irrespective of whether you’re using DirectX 11 or 12, it’ll always crash with the Debug and Validation enabled?
Yeah that’s what I’m seeing on my end.
Hmmm ok, I would’ve expected it to work on DirectX 11… I will unlist this post shortly and have a chat with our Engine Developer, because it sounds like it’s not quite working as it should be. Thank you for your help!

Here’s a crash dump I just caught when running DX11, borderless fullscreen, with debug values set to true. It might help the engine dev compare between DX11/12, crash at launch time for both - I see the screen go black as if it’s going to start and then it crashes:
