Sure if I’m able to articulate effectively why I disagree (this isn’t always the case). Though, not if the reason could be summed up as “I think you’re an idiot with flawed ideas and that’s being charitable.” Granted, most people on this forum don’t fall into that category but there’s at least one that I can most certainly say would qualify for this response (this particular person DM’d me in an attempt to goad me, so they’re on the list).
Allow me to put those two different things to perspective.
You’re sitting at the dinner table with your family during a holiday (whichever one is relevant to your cultures, values and beliefs)
You’re enjoying your meal, your family’s having a great conversation but then that relative brings something controversial to the table that directly affects you and you’ve got strong beliefs on the matter.
You have three options:
Say nothing, which leads to an awkwardness at the table as that relative keeps spouting off their inflammatory beliefs unchecked.
Being blunt would be to simply say “I disagree”, and immediately afterwards you should change the topic and continue to enjoy the time with your family.
Being rude would be to start a massive argument with that relative in front of everyone else, thus spoiling the dinner for everyone.
It may not be enough for you, but it does convey enough for me, at least; as well as everyone else who liked the comment.
Regardless, as I’ve mentioned: I’m fond of saving my own time as I’ve accumulated way too much read time as a result of impassioned people thinking they have a point when in reality what they had were talking points with no substance.
Well, considering the subject matter is controversial, the reason for changing the subject is implied pretty heavily. How you choose to shut it down would be where the bluntness comes in (IMO) - do you say “let’s not discuss that over dinner”, state your stance and change topics, or tell them to STFU.
Like if someone makes a vulgar joke at the dinner table, it’s apparent why you’d want to steer the discussion away.
For the cases where you_might_ do it, would there be a specific reason why you didn’t provide the reason first time around? Lack of time, not bothered, etc? Again, this is just curiosity (and not solely directed at you), but I do wonder whether people are open to elaborating if prompted, or it’s “No, that’s all that needs to be said on the matter”
Also I’ve been on here since damn near launch, I had my first post removed this week because I was poking fun at a sensitive sally who has issues with people with pronouns.
It’s fun to prod at the “idiots” and see where the rabbidhole ends it usually doesn’t and it’s too fun to argue with em.
But after a while it just becomes annoying and once the need for a good conversation kicks in, it’s more depressing than anything else.
At that point, the conversation usually ends for me.
Holy good god thank you for putting it into words.
It’s so f*cking stupid that some just spit out their take without elaboration. Bonus points if they act all superior and condesending.
Kinda pathetic too. Tell me you hate losing without saying it, right?
I have no issues with this forum. My standards are very low though.
Firstly the people that act in bad faith are at the very least semi-coherent, and ad hominems relatively minor though I’m very far below doing my own which I’ll pepper in like buckshot while I try to maintain the point. This is somewhat petty admittedly.
With that in mind 2 out of my 3 “moderated” posts probably had it coming though there was a double standard involved. I don’t really flag anything other than one instance of someone being pretty blatant about some…stuff.
Secondly no downvote system means I don’t have to self censor for fear of having comments hidden (mostly, lol). It’s a bad system on any forum style website.
Thirdly. It’s not the steam forums. The people here by in large know what they are talking about, or at least know not to throw in on subjects they don’t know about.
Just as an example a couple of weeks ago there was a thread on the steam forums talking about how you shouldn’t use Brutal momentum on power sword because it has infinite cleave anyways (no).
This is verifiable within 2 minutes (3 minutes with a slow PC) of loading your game, and going into the Meat Grinder, but much like PoE reddit it just gets a bunch of talking heads nodding sagely agreeing with the first point made the loudest.
Are these forums perfect? Hell no, but the discussion is surprisingly civil even with most of the people who disagree with me with the obvious blip here, and there.
Hell, the biggest disagreement I’ve had which was just yesterday still didn’t devolve into the person in question calling me a racial slur. So that’s cool.
