Bot Improvements Combat mod returned!

Hi! I just want to let you know that this very popular mod is working again!

OaNtKb started fixing it, I helped him with uploading and suggestions, but then OaNtKb stopped cooperating and the mod was completed by Aliquis and now it’s back in the Steam Workshop.

I want to ask Fatshark to sanction it again. Don’t worry, I’ve been playing this game for years and I’ll play it as long as it works and I will take care of this mod to the end.

And I also want to ask players to try testing it. Neither Aliquis nor I have found any bugs, but testing is never enough. If you find anything, let me know.

The mod is here:

I Hope it gets sanctioned.
I don’t know what has happened over the last few patches, It feels like the bots are becoming more buggy with every update, Examples: They sometimes just freeze in the rat gas, most of the time they just straight up abandon you to go look into the void for some other special (While triggering Patrols and Monsters, as they wonder the realms and like it was needed when I’m already being overwhelmed). They get stuck in the most random places and you have to progress a certain amount before they can just teleport to you. If they don’t just leave you, they stand with range weapon in hand and don’t even participate and get downed as we are swarmed. Once you get downed (if they aren’t already dead for some moronic reason), then I’d say you have like a 30/70 chance of getting back up (Sometimes it looks like they are airport security frisking you over and over before eventually getting knocked down themselves) or you’re dying a mid their attempts or just they’ll abandon the attempt entirely and you to die (Most of the time they could have easily saved you or the other bot/s), which makes the experience infuriating.
On the other hand they are great at wasting ammo on random elites, Using their Ult’s and for the most part pulling Patrols into it.
I guess its a skill issue, as for the most part I’ve completed pretty much every mission on cata on multiple careers and classes but I’m not trying to true solo.
Make no mistake, I do believe for the most parts the bots are pretty decent up to Legend across multiple careers and classes. But then Deeds seem like they already fall behind and that becomes true solo in most cases as soon as they are dead (Modifier dependent).
I wouldn’t even care if the player base was a bit more healthier but some countries just don’t have that many players playing, especially at Higher difficulties.
Even though I believe the games deserves to have a ton of players from all across the globe and has had a ton of content put into the game. I love the song and dance of this game and find the Skill curve to be quite fun and rewarding when playing with others that are competent.

Bot pathfinding is very map dependent. Usually newer maps are much worse for bots. Also, when playing with bots, it is good to remember the places where they have problems and, if possible, avoid them. It’s possible to easily handle Cata with all the books if you have the right build for them - even without this mod.

Here is my guide, you might find it useful.

So I removed the feature to favor light attacks over heavy attacks because it was problematic with some weapons and armored enemies, and the combat capabilities of bots have improved a lot with the last few game updates so I don’t think it was necessary to keep this feature. I did some tests and it seemed to me that the bots performed better without it anyway. I also hope that maybe this will speed up the sanctioning of the mod by FS. If anyone encounters any other problems with the mod, please let me know.

The mod also currently has a nice number of 333 subscribers.

So i have been testing it a Bit so far on Cata 1 vanilla and with dwons. They perform very good, they dont snipe Specials as fast as with the experimental bot mod but they also dont get stuck hitting a dead taggable dead enemy.

BUT they keep chasing gas Rats Like in Vanilla. There is somewhere a gar Rat one or two rooms ahead and they drop everything to chase it till within melee range. And thats the biggest problem already in vanilla too. Every other quirck can be worked around.

Thanks, I’ll try to look into it. But so far it always seems to me that my bots use ranged weapons against specials a lot more with the mod. I’ll do some tests…

I played again and tried to record a few noticeable behavior occurrences.

  1. Twitch - The bots avoided the patrol until a gas rat appeared around the corner. Then they chased it and ended up aggroing the patrol. They often try to get into melee range with the gas rat. On the positive side, they handled the chaos patrol extremely well. Their melee performance against hordes and elites was excellent.
  2. Twitch and Twitch - They also showed good behavior during boss fights.
  3. Twitch - It was a bit amusing to watch how they interacted with the packmaster
  4. Twitch - Very poor behavior from the IB bot: he dropped down to chase a gas rat and eventually got hooked.

Overall, the bots perform great with this mod. Let’s hope Fatshark will re-sanction it. Also, let me know if these kinds of recordings are of any help or interest to you.

Yes, it’s useful. Especially if you could test different weapons and tell me which ones need fixing. So far I know about dual wield weapons only.

Otherwise, the funny situation with Packmaster is caused by the fact that bots usually only react to specials if they attack or if they actually run into them. This is normal behavior of bots in the game, unfortunately, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Yes, i can confirm that on weapons like dual swords, mace and sword, dual hammers the bots seem to avoid doing heavy attacks, especially against elites.

It seems that I managed to fix Dual Hammers, Mace and Sword and Axe and Falchion. Please try them and tell me if they are working fine for you.

By the way 437 subscribers. It seems that people really like it. FS come on, sanction it already.

Neat work!

Someone just reported that bots often get stuck in hordes. Does anyone have the same problem?

I just thought of something, it’d be nice to be able to manually configure certain things based on which career the bots are using; such as perhaps allowing bots with boss-killing stuff to prioritize bosses, etc.

I like how there’s an option for bots not to heal Zealot, and it’d be nice to be able to configure when bots heal themselves based on career too, since some can tank even wounded, but other’s can’t.
