Advice on backstab headshots?

I’m currently running a Shroudfield Zealot build with the Ironhelm Thunder Hammer and am working on how to deal with big elite groups and bosses. I’ve noticed that basically all enemies, even the ones with a hunch—such as Crushers, Bulwarks, Mutants, and Chaos Spawns—can be hit with a headshot from behind if you stand close to them and the head is within the swing arc. However, no matter how I jump, wiggle, or twist the camera during the attack, it seems to be very inconsistent whether I land the headshot or not. The window for a backstab with respect to the Pious Cut-Throat talent requires you to hit a target from within about a 90° cone behind them, and I’m pretty sure this is also the window for getting the bonus damage from Shroudfield itself. Both are highly desirable in tense situations, so I was wondering if anyone had a bit of advice on how to land headshots on large enemies from behind.

Just whack them in the head!

Seriously though your exact question is why I specced completely out of backstabbing on zealot🤪 seemed way too much effort for me haha

Combat blade is what I use. Sometimes I jump to hit heads on Ogyrn’s.

Throwing knives help close the distance.

And then I use boltgun for carapace and elite swarms.

Use the 3rd person mod, it makes aiming for headshots in melee easier in my experience, especially with knives. Perspectives mod on nexus, also use it with the crosshairs remap mod for best results.

Easy way: light overheads. Aim for above the ring into the air against the Bulwark. Aim above the center skull ornament and point your crosshair at the air for the Crusher. Aim for the above the head on the Reaper. You need to be some distance back from them too, I think around one character’s worth?

If using heavies, you need to jump. It’s possible but virtually impossible.

This is all done with a max height character.

Interesting tips! Does height matter? I definitely need to land heavies to get reliable kills against most enemies.

Honestly, i do jump when trying to headshot Ogryn enemies, but I’m not sure it really helps. I’ve gotten plenty of accidental headshots while swinging heavies at ground level.
