Headshots seem to be broken

I am not sure if this a bug or not, but aiming for the head seems to not give headshot damage half the time. I have to aim above heads sometimes for headshots to register. That is very weird design if intentional.

Which weapon? Rashad Axe and Brunt Special are the two I’m aware of (but the bully club does no extra headshot damage anyway).

I think also a problem is “phantom hits,” on your screen it looks like it should’ve been a headshot, but due to server issues it doesn’t register as one. This is more of a problem on ranged weapons, were you will get the headshot sound notifier but the enemy won’t take damage.

A lot of weapons seem to have this issue and I’ve seen it suggested elsehwere that it’s because the weapon hits both the body and the head hitzone, and the game for some reason (probably erroneously) prioritizes the weaker hitzone if this happens. Especially noticable on some Ogryn weapons, especially the Latrine Shovel. Hitting something in the head basically never counts as a headshot because the slightly diagonal swing almost always also hits the shovels, so the hitreg gets downgraded.

Also observable with the bolter, which cannot score headshots on most enemies except for a few specific ones. It can for example score headshots on the yellow dreg shooters, but only if you aim at the very top of their heads. On other shooters not even that is possible.

Every weapon as far as I can tell.

I’ve noticed wonkiness with headshots and i think it may have to do with enemy arm placement. when the shooters are aiming at you they have raised hands in front of them. limbs take less damage. so as they are performing their janky running around animations i think they actually block some incoming fire. especially between the upper body/chin area. the hellbore lasgun i tested is really bad for this. where a body or limb hit is the difference between a 1 shot or not on all ranged enemies.

in short, aim for the d!ck or the top of the head.
